When did America stop being great?

I keep hearing these political ads 'I will make America great again!' and I'm curious for how long has it not been great? What event made America not be great anymore? What exactly happened and when?

That is the code word I will bring back slavery and segregation

How was America great when we were over runned by minorities ?

Trump represent the face of the true America and it is disgusting

Must be cramped in that small room with the other hillary shrills

Obama's election to a second term.  It marks the inflection point in American History where we entered terminal, irreversible decline as a great power.

Why not his first term? What exactly happened on that November day that destroyed the greatness of America?

I think it's funny when republicans act like the favorite time for them was the early 1950s when blacks had no rights and women just stayed home, cook and make babies. But they ignore the fact that one person could support a large family with one job, had health care and 401K. The highway system was being built by actually taxing huge corporations and the super uber rich and there were enough jobs, to once again support your family with one of them.

This.

My grandfather was a WWII veteran and USPS mail carrier. He and my grandmother had five kids and lived in a 2 story home. My grandmother stayed home to take care of the kids.

They weren't rich by any means, but they had enough. Try that in today's world. That's not an argument for "how things should be". But it should be an option.

Every time the subject of raising minimum wage is brought up, I see a million idiot propaganda memes on Facebook declaring "Oh, you think a McDonald's employee should make more than an EMT???" (I know a lot of morons on FB. I grew up in the south).

Can anybody tell me who in the hell ever suggested that? Because I've never seen it. Where has any supporter of raising minimum wage stated that other wages shouldn't be raised as well?

These things are not mutually exclusive. Look at the salaries the corporate fat cats are raking in and then go look at what an EMT makes...what a teacher makes...what a firefighter makes.

Raising minimum wage isn't about overpaying burger flippers. It's about fixing a scale that's been grossly skewed for a long time (and getting worse). But you have to start at the bottom rung of the ladder to move the rest of the steps.

My grandpa once said he had one job, worked 40 hours a week, had health care and a 401k and enough money to live comfortably in a house they (the bank) owned to take care of himself, my grandma, four children, 5 cats and two dogs for the first 12-15 years of their marriage until the kids (three of which were born within the first years of their marriage.) got old enough and my grandma went to work. He wasn't hundreds of thousands of dollars in doubt so he could work 4 jobs, 90 hour weeks to make ends meet so the super rich corporations can get tax refunds.

But yeah, my generation is spoiled and entitled. We are entitled to basic human rights and a living wage, and if we get a cough can actually afford to take a day off and not go bankrupt at a hospital.

One big difference between then and now for single-worker-families is what folks expect from their standard of living. Back in the day, you generally had one car and the adults shared. Paid TV wasn't even in existence (let alone internet). You had one phone in the house and rarely called anyone long distance (as opposed to everyone in the household having a cellphone - my two-person plan runs a little over $150/month). Additionally, you generally didn't have credit cards back in the day - how many people do you know that complain about their credit card debt? They likely bought something they couldn't afford and didn't need thinking they'd pay it off later - back then, you just went without.

The standard of living is higher, but there's a cost here. And that cost is having two working parents.

That's not really true. My grandma talked about how they would stick money into the side of the TV or radio everyday to pay it off. There were just different things than credit cards.

Approving the assault on a protestor and having huge swaths of them arrested is A OK in the Donald's book. But don't you stop him and his supporters from opening their big mouths, that's a grave injustice. http://www.cnn.com/2016/03/12/politics/donald-trump-protests/
I'm not a Trump guy but it AMAZES me the amount of stuff that gets posted that is just not factually correct; like the garbage about him saying ALL Mexicans/immigrants are rapists and murderers. It's like the younger generations think that if they say it loud enough and frequently enough it'll become fact.

Let me guess... you're another one who thinks Trump is saying ANYONE who protests his rallies should be arrested?

It amazes me that people don't see Trump for who he is, he's insane and hateful. He's in favor of free speech as long as that speech is what he agrees with on any given day. He's talking about his supporters beating and 'worse' people who speak out against his hate. He is ok with the KKK supporting him. I wonder if he will be ok when one of his insane hate-filled supporters goes over the edge and kills someone who speaks out against Trump.

Trump's supporters are hate filled? Do you say that because in today's PC world we're only allowed to call white people out as being hate filled?

Take 30 seconds and follow the comments on an anti-trump meme on facebook and/or instagram and tell me whose followers are filled with hate? Tell me which candidate the posters are threatening to kill? Which candidates supporters are being called "Coons" and "Uncle Tom's"?

Last time I checked "free speech" stopped being "free speech" when it becomes disruptive and violent.

Trump is supporting violence, that crosses a line one one else has crossed, it's as simple as that. When people can no longer tell the difference between what Trump says and what Hitler says that's when people need to speak up against that hate.

And you act like a 'Coon' or an 'Uncle Tom' or fucking Hilter you will be called that.

The crazy thing is, I see people try to turn it around and say "If Trump supporters came to a Sanders rally and acted that way, the media would blast them for it." Well, Trump supporters...down to his freaking campaign manager have been physically assaulting people. To some of these people "You said a mean thing...so I'm going to hit you." is valid logic.

This report lays it out perfectly. Rachel Maddow is a little heavy handed in her delivery...for the most part, the clips speak for themselves. But this shows the chronological order of statements Trump has made to agitate and escalate the tension, constantly suggesting violence.

The only defense for it (playing devil's advocate here) is thinking protesting is wrong and disrespectful. And truth be told, the right to PROTEST isn't granted by the Constitution. But freedom of assembly and freedom of speech are.

So, what you end up with is this gray area of sort of public/sort of private events and sort of civil/sort of disruptive demonstration. None of that gives anyone the right to put their hands on somebody though.

But we need to decide as a country if these should be private events where antagonizers can be legitimately asked to leave (and escorted out) by law enforcement. Or if peacefully assembling and silently protesting should be covered by the Constitution.

You shouldn't be allowed to assault people. But you shouldn't be allowed to just show up and wreck shit either.

That's not the issue at hand at all. You can protest and you can be forced out of the Trump events (outside is a different story). What you can't do is let people hit the protesters on the way out.

Why is the liberal media with New York values going after Trump for "lying" about paying his supporters' legal fees if they commit an act of assault against his protestors? Why would any idiot promise that?

Trump says whatever is on his mind. His lies and outrageous claims, like Hillary's lies, do not seem to faze his supporters. Heck, many liberals hold FDR up as a great president even though he threw innocent Americans into camps. Better yet are the uninformed who do not believe it when I tell them it actually happened. :wall:

And how many "conservatives" came to these innocent people's defense, how many republicans went against FDR interment camps?. Looks like republicans sat back and happily watch. Again the democrats backs then are the republicans of today

So lets just admit it America is still a RACIST society both ways around, however if you want to be a full on raging bigot and racist the republican party will welcome you with open arms while at least the democrats might give you the stink eye.

That was 70 years ago, you would think America would learn from their mistakes.

But nah.... Let's vote for the uneducated racist asshole who will give the bomb to Saudi Arabia!
