Trailer is finally up!

It looks like it's going to be a pretty decent comedy and having grown up where they were filming in Boston, it makes this a must-see for me.

I don't remember if I saw the original in theaters, but I know I definitely saw 2. Yeah, it was a big part of my childhood along with the cartoons and the only toy I had was Egon, BUT I did have a bunch of coloring books and made lego proton blasters.

When they announced the new version with a different take, I was more than fine with it since I really liked Bridesmaids and I think Wiig is hilarious. I can't say I like Helmsworth though.

Anyone else looking forward to this?

I've gotta say when the cast was originally announced I hadn't been watching SNL so I had no idea who Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones were so I was kind of skeptical. Since then I've started to watch SNL again pretty regularly so I'm starting to like the casting. Also, based on the trailer it looks like Melissa McCarthy isn't playing the typical Melissa McCarthy character she seems to be cast as so that's a plus as well.

I agree. Clumsy fat person slapstick can get old. At least she doesn't act all coked out in her movies, so that's a plus.

I have said this elsewhere, but I don't understand why this is a reboot instead of a sequel. It felt like one half stale and unfunny jokes and one half redoing the first 2 films.

At least they had Slimer. Theme song was cool. I'm trying to stay optimistic but to be honest I wasn't sold.

But it said "30 years ago 4 people saved New York."

Reboot or sequel?

It's a reboot with the text referencing the original 2 films and 1 game since Winston apparently got his doctorate sometime between 2 and the game hence the "4 scientists saved New York." He wasn't a scientist in the movies. ;)

Unless things have changed, it's a reboot. The new Ecto-1 was seen coming out of a random garage instead of the firehouse.
Ecto-1 is actually coming out of the garage of this particular movie's hq, which happens to be in a Chinese restaurant.

Fun Fact: The garage was built specifically for the movie and part of the set; not an actual part of the building. It's no longer there.

NO NO NO SONY!!!

This version of Ghostbusters is the result of Dan Aykroyd feeding us bullshit over the years about the script being worked on and so on....that everyone is on board, except Murry, who said he would only come back if he is killed off and turned into a ghost in the first 5 minutes of the movie.  I did like the idea that was mentioned where it was a passing of the torch with Peter and Dana's son taking over with a new group of GB's.   With the death of Harold Ramis  and Murry didn't want to do it, it just seem like it would have been best to leave it to die already.  Nope said SONY. Gotta milk this dead cow.

My wife and I saw the anniversary release 2 years ago in the theaters and although we have seen it dozens of times before, seeing it in the theaters was a nicer experience.   A movie of that era was slower paced and actually make it more enjoyable than anything we currently see.   The new movie just looks like a cluster fuck of over done special effects (SONY enough of the obvious use of B/G Screens!!).  I don't recognize anyone except McCarthy.    Slimer looks good though.

I will end up seeing it just  cause my wife is a fan of McCarthy.... but it won't be the same without the old crew.

To tell the truth, I'm not a big Ghostbusters fan, but I appreciate it as a SNL vehicle. So will this.

People like Paul Feig movies, and the trailers always disappoint. So eh.

Maybe it is a sequel and a reboot at the same time, if the names aren't the same? It's disappointing that it's three White characters, and the Black one has attitude as usual.  At least this time all four appear to be more than competent at what they do.

I'm gonna guess that the villain of this movie is somebody from the old movies. My money's on that ugly baby Oscar.

The main villain is actually named Rowan and looks like a big-ass version of the ghost from the logo. My friend Pixel Dan inadvertently broke the story during Toy Fair.

I have yet to see a reboot of a classic like Ghostbusters that does the original any justice, and I don't think this will change that. Maybe I'll watch this if it ends up on Netflix and I'm bored as shit one day

The commentary on the DVD said Winston had a PH.D. prior to joining.

Anyone else prefer the fan cut trailer?

I am feeling less enthusiastic about seeing this movie after seeing the toys at TRU.

I probably won't see it. Everything from the 80's and 90's is just being regurgitated back up with a new coat of paint (with the Power Rangers it is a very shiny coat of paint). Maybe this will be as good as the "awesome" Point Break remake that didn't need to exist.

Why are they remaking Jumanji? The Rock and Jack Black are starring in it. Oh boy.

Evil Dead at least did it right. They made that movie in 2014 that way okay, but figured out the way to go was to go back and get Bruce Campbell back for Ash and pretty much continue for the first movies.

New trailer is infinitely more fun then the original trailer. I'll probably see it but not likely at release.

Ghostbusters will be a testament to the power of the trailer. I guarantee you they will not screen it for critics before nationwide release.

Yeah I read the reviews... It's like it doesn't know what to do with itself...be a remake or an homage to the original.

So, I just watched a vlog review of the film and they said that in the scene where they're insulting the haters they apparently not only went after James Rolfe but insulted his wife and daughter too? Did they seriously do that?

Lol, I doubt it. If they did, props to James for making them such mad nerds. That whole thing is way overblown anyway just because he refuses to shit on his childhood. I stand with him in refusing to see the film because it uses the name for recognition when it's not a valid reboot.

Apparently I just mis-interpreted what Linkara said. The only line in the movie is apparently talking about "men in their mom's basement." The ones going after Rolfe's wife were other professional film critics, not the movie itself.

Saw it yesterday at a screening. It was terrible. The jokes fall flat. Best thing about it was that it was free. The cameos were nice, but pulled you out of the film and made you miss the originals that much more/make you remember how much better the originals are. Feig did a terrible job and it shows that he either doesn't like the property or had an axe to grind or something. I just didn't think he would make this bad a movie.

How is it that I keep hearing this movie is being panned and yet it has a 76% certified fresh rating on RT? Something smells like payouts. . .

Reviews are all over the place. From what I've seen/read/whatever, the writing is bad, the special effects are meh, and outside of the five leads, the characters are blah or unlikable. What is good is apparently the humor. If you like the humor in the mvoie, you'll like the movie itself. If you hate the humor, you'll hate the movie.

What a lot of reviews are also saying is that it's pretty misandrist as well. All the male characters, even the cameos of the original Ghostbusters, are either idiots or assholes. Even the final battle apparently ends with
the team shooting their version of Stay Puft in the groin.

Misandrist? That's probably just coming from a bunch of malcontent MRA's. I mean c'mon, almost everyone was an idiot or an asshole outside of the main cast in the original movies too.

Seems to me that a lot of gender tropes are being flipped and the people that are now at the butt of the joke don't like being there despite loving being on the giving end of it. Not that there's any self reflection on it of course.

But like you said, humor is a subjective thing and this movie won't be for everybody.

Misandrist is probably a strong word, but it's something both Linkara's brother and Chris Stuckman both noted, among others. It might be a by product of the "girl power" stuff the movie and marketing campaign has shoved down our throats, though.

EDIT: Here are the reviews themselves. Judge for yourself.

The neckbeard kinda has a bug up his butt about it because of his attachment to the franchise. I also don't think that "girl power" was being shoved down anyone's throat either and it wasn't really the main focus of the marketing. It's not like they're being promoted as the Ghostbuster version of the Spice Girls.

As for their comments about there being no intelligent male characters, I don't see why this movie has the carry the weight of being The Great Equalizer in entertainment media just because it has virtually all female leads. It comes off as a bit disingenuous and it really isn't the hill to die on(and there won't be one unless we have a matriarchy like our current patriarchy). The neckbeard goes a lot deeper into that hole whereas Chris just kinda throws it out there as something that made him go "huh."

It looks like a fun movie to me, but I might end up hating it since I'm not a huge fan of slapstick. I guess we'll see in a week or so.

Nobody wanted Point Break, Karate Kid, Annie, Conan, Robocop, Poltergeist, Evil Dead, and nobody wanted Ghostbusters.

I think more than anything - it is just that most people don't want remakes of the movies from the 80's and this one has a lot of money behind so people are tired of seeing it on commercials or hearing that horrible theme song. I can't think of any of the other 80's remake movie that got even 25% of the commercials and air time that Ghostbusters has so far. Of course there are some fringe jerks who will hate it because of female leads, but mostly it is just because it is different (alot of people were extremely pissed about no Ash and the change in tone for Evil Dead). Fans would be crapping themselves over a Ghostbusters movie with the original cast - anything else would be a let done.

Evil Dead figured it out by scrapping the whole remake universe and bringing back Bruce Campbell for a tv series sequel to Evil Dead 2 & Army of Darkness (which is absolutely amazing).

The only crappy reboot/remake from the 80's that is surviving is Transformers - even though each movie gets crappier and crappier reviews. Must just be the big explosions and kids who buy the action figures who keep the franchise going.

Ok.

I saw it last night in RPX 3d and here are my non spoiler thoughts:

Who ever did the trailers could have really fucked up things for the movie because after seeing the first few trailers I hated the movie before I even saw it.

Ended up going to see it because of the so so reviews.

And guess what?  It is not bad at all.   I was expecting over the top stupid reactions and screaming from both McCarthy and Jones but it wasn't bad at all.   Absolutely hated the character that Helmsworth was playing.... yes it was suppose to be comic relief but just felt like he was there just to be there.   McKinnon character was just weird.  The villain was ok.   Lots of references to the original movies.   The cameos were good...with Murray getting the most screen time.  If you pay attention in the first part of the movie there is a head statue of what looks like Ramis.

I say this movie could have had a darker mood with darker lighting.

Now for the 3d.   For years I have been going to 3d movies off and on and have noticed either I have become immune to the effects of 3d or the 3d was so small that it wasn't even worth seeing the movie in 3d...for example things like rain or other weather effects would just be "oh meh" in 3d... but in this movie it was actually in full effect.  For the first time since I was impressed with the 3d effects in Resident Evil Afterlife (the effects not the movie), the 3d was actually pretty good.   The first thing that really popped out in 3d was the effect of that ghost from the trailer vomit sliming Wiig's character.  For the first time I actually jumped back in my seat because the vomit looked like it was coming right at me.   That has never happened to me before.   The effects actually crossed the letterbox border and even the scene where

Leslie Jones' character starts bitch slapping McCarthy, holy shit her head was just huge in 3d crossing that letterbox border.

Does it have potential to make some good money this weekend?  Yes, is it better than the original, no.  Can their be a sequel?  I am sure there can be but please either get rid of Helmsworth or change his character to something less stupid.

So 3.5 out of 5 stars for me.

Thanks for the review without the aid of critics. fucking thread has been full of it.

I thought the original trailer looked bad too. But I'll watch FemBusters when I get the chance.

Dammit, I have to scrounge up the money to watch this in iMax, but I'm one of the few people who can't watch movies in regular 3D due to my wiring. I have seen an iMax movie as a child, but can't recall if I really got the effect.
