"You couldn't pay me to play Halo 5..." ...1 week later... "Dude, Halo 5 is free to play this week!!!"

I put it in my Gamefly queue to try a few months ago.  Played it for maybe two days.  Sent it back.

Campaign was a noisy mess.  Multiplayer was (as expected) similar to other Halo games in that you really need to play regularly to be good and to remain good at it.  I remember back in the H3 days...if I stopped playing for a week, I would get pwned.  Had to play daily or every other day to keep skills and reflexes fresh.  Too much time commitment involved.  Long story short: my Gamefly trial of Halo multiplayer was not enjoyable as I got pwned every which way and the game wasn't enough of a draw that I wanted to put time into getting good at it.

Ranking in Halo 5 is a joke. I still can't find anyone who can explain to me how they determine your rank with the first 10 games you play. I understand after that it's based on wins which is horrible when everyone is always quitting.

I've been hanging on to a $10 microsoftstore copy but at 80gb to install and so much negativity, my backlog is telling me to take my $19 from GameStop and get out while the getting is good...

Just play through the campaign and be done with it. Such a huge disappointment. Was really burned on it :( I even bought the Halo 5 le xbone, which I'll probably be rid of it a cool xbones or Scorpio is released

Does that include DLC achievements?
If the game gives you access to the DLC content, then yes. Basically, as far as achievements are concerned, when you free play a game, the system acts as if you own it (until the free play period ends).

eh honestly I actually picked up that collectors edition from BestBuy. (shamefully admitting) basically because of the statue. Thinking about taking it back and exchanging it for xbox live gift card.

Only other reason I got it was in hopes to see halo added to the play any where list.

Boy that hasn't been my experience. There are filters for matchmaking. It defaults to something like "get me into a game in an acceptable amount of time", but you can set it for a more granular search that supposedly matches you with people closer to your skill. I changed it to that and never looked back when I found I was getting into matches with more players similar to my skill.

I love Halo V and hope this weekend convinces some other people that it's fun.

It's one of the most technically accomplished games of this console generation and there are so many entertaining things to do in.

Does anyone know how this "free play" thing actually works? Since last night all I've seen in the store is the half price discount, but no option to just download the game.

Halo 5 is some of the GOAT Halo MP. Easily up there for me as #2 behind Halo 2, mainly because Halo 2 was the first big online console game I ever played and XBox Live just came out so it was a brand new experience for a lot of people including myself. Halo 5 has done everything right to evolve the franchise and I give big props to 343 for the MP experience. I just think Master Chief Collection really soiled peoples views and probably hurt Halo 5 sales a bit, that and low X1 install base compared to say PS4.

Campaign is OK. Nothing great, nothing incredibly bad outside of facing the same boss 92393 times. Way too much focus on Locke, less on Chief is probably the biggest hurt outside of just being an OK campaign.

Either way the game is free... as long as your internet speed is pretty fast and you don't have a data cap, go for it lol

I haven't been able to get diddly squat.. maybe it's the new Xbox experience thing or I have no clue because usually these deals are on the deals page and this one is not. If I look up Halo 5 it shows a "buy" tile for me not a try it free one. Am I missing something?

Looks like will have the same issue as the EA Access trial for Preview participants, at least for now.

Yeah the game is half off but there is an option to try for free. Look for the play for free ad on the dashboard.

Yeah I saw that, clicked on it. It takes me to a generic Xbox Gold page with no mention of Halo 5. Searching through the store manually the game is still $30. I'll try again tomorrow.

I clicked the "buy" option even though the price was still listed as $30 (with no other options) and it immediately added it to my library without charging me. Pretty bad design but it is downloading now.

I'm glad they give you a week to play, since it looks like it's going to take that long to download the game.

This game is so bad it's not even worth the HD space, yet alone the time to download.  The only Halo games that were ever good were the ones that Hardy Lebel worked on.  343 can't even port a 15+ year old game correctly without it having countless bugs years after release.

Case in point:

I finally got it downloading but surprise surprise, it still shows it ending in 5 days. Would've been nice if they gave us the full 7 days promised but whatever. Guess we can't be too salty when it comes to free stuff.

Played the first 5 levels so far. I've only played halo 1-3 despite having them all. I'm having fun with it but I feel like I'd be having a better time if I knew the halo 4 story. Going to try to power through the rest of the campaign and I guess I'll pick it up when it's $10 sometime down the road

Halo MCC has been 10 bucks for some time now at CDKeys if you feel like grabbing it. Probably no time to play 4 before the free week of 5 ends but you can at least go back to it after and make more sense of the story.

I've enjoyed the MP and Warzone Firefight much more than the Campaign. I am going to wrap that up tonight and probably be done with it. I'll have gotten over 500 Gamerscore for nothing, so not bad time spent. I could see myself picking it up down the road for like $20 for the MP.

I played a round of MP on Halo: MCC yesterday after spending the last few days playing Halo 5 and kept trying to run, boost and climb on things. I might be hooked.
