Changing PS4 to another PS4

I want to make sure I do this correctly so I can trade in my old PS4.

I have two users, my son and myself. I have PS+ on my acct so all my saves are in the cloud. His are not. When I tried to go through the process of backing up, it said his user is not associated with a PSN acct and needs to be linked with one or all his info will be lost. I created one for him and only still need to add it to his user. Once that's done, I still need to backup all his savegame data correct? I think I read that I can use a USB flash drive for that, but will still need a external drive for the system backup?

Am I missing anything else?

May want to use google to verify but I believe your external drive has to be FAT32 formatted.  I'll caveat my next statements with the notion that I am assuming there has not been a speed change going from PS3 to PS4 since I believe they are still USB2 ports.  You're going to 4-12 hours with the backup and restore.  I'd just backup the saves and re-install everything you are currently playing.  Going to take about the same amount of time if you have a 500gb drive.

Did mine a few months ago. Found it was easiest to start new. Copy all your save data to a usb stick and just reinstall your games back as you play them.

Especially if you have any decent Internet speeds for updates and downloads. Just make sure your PS4 is wired and not wireless when doing this.

Actually the PS4 has USB 3.0 ports, not 2.0 ones. You must be thinking of the Wii U, which only has USB 2.0 ports, in typical Nintendo cheapness.

Make sure to deauthorize your console when you are all done with the backups.
