Anyway to find out when a Digital Code was used?

OK simply put, I sold a digital code for Forza Horizon 2, two months ago on eBay.
The winner had me email him the code, which I did along with a scanned copy of card.
I sent a backup to his eBay messages just in case.

Today the buyer sent a dispute to my PayPal saying the item was purchased without his authorization

The code has been redeemed according to Microsoft, but there is no time or date.

I sent PayPal a copy of every email, correspondence, and even the scans themselves as proof the buy got the item he purchased. Till this clears I have a hold on my account and it's just irritating the heck out of me, the entire thing will take up to 30days to clear.

I know if you contact Sony chat support they can tell you when a PSN code was redeemed.  Not sure if MS support can do the same, but it wouldn't hurt to try.

Yeah, I can verify that Sony Support can tell you time and date of redemption, but unsure about Microsoft support.  Xbox.com of course only tells you that it's been redeemed, but nothing more specific than that.

It's gotten worse...

Paypal just sent me this

The disputed amount has been debited from your PayPal account because of the following reason(s):

Intangible items are not covered under Seller Protection.

In addition, you have been debited a $20.00 USD chargeback fee.

This portion of the case is considered closed, and had been upgraded from dispute to fraud.

I had to pointing out it was a code card, and the buyer asked me to just send the code to save on shipping, so there IS a physical portion.

So you never actually send him the card? Sorry you are not going to win this.
I sent him the scans of the card and code just has he asked.
He didn't want the card sent to save shipping costs.

I sent Paypal a copy of every communication and correspondence with the person along with the card's scans.

  • eBay message of me asking if he wants me to digitally or physically send the card
  • eBay reply of him saying to send it to his email
  • eBay message of me asking what his email is
  • email complete with codes
  • Picture of email, complete with codes and date
  • eBay message of me sending the codes via eBay
  • eBay message a day later making sure he got the codes
  • Scan of the card
  • Scan of the card unscratched
  • Scan of the card scratched
  • Close up of the code
  • Detailed log from Microsoft stating the code was used on July 2nd, 2016.

I got scammed, and scammed hard and am fuming pissed.

It feels like he knew exactly what he was doing.
The item sold on June 28th, was paid for and sent on the 29th, and redeemed on the 2nd.

This may take up to 90 days to resolve now, since it has been escalated.

Thank you both, I contacted Microsoft and they verified it was used on July 2nd, 2016.

3 days after I had sent it to him on the 29th.

TBH, you scammed yourself.  If you had just mailed the card for $1.50 it would have been resolved in your favor.

EBay is a Double dipping company they charge you to sell and then charge you to get the money

That I will give you, I should have known better.

I should have just sent the card to him, but I was doing as the buyer had asked.

I've bought a few digital products and just gotten the code via eBay, so I didn't think any different of it.

It does however feel like he knew this outcome would happen and they are still looking into it, it'll just take upward of 90 days now instead of the original 30. This is because the claim has been upgraded to fraud from just a dispute.

I do think it was the evidence and documents that I sent before posting this thread upgraded the claim, the claim had been upgraded by the time I posted the 2nd message, and thanks to you both I was able to give an exact date on when the code was claimed/used.

Yeah shit like that happens unfortunately. I’ve had my bad experiences too where I was scammed out of my code. It happens and unfortunately the world has people like that. Personally, I’ve retaliated by just signing them up for magazine subscriptions but it still doesn’t take the sting out. Even over losing something like $15 worth it’s the intention that has me fuming over something so immaterial in the end. If $15 makes me mad, i can only imagine how pissed i would be over $30+. Probably even more than twice as mad. Since you have his information, I would do something about it to teach him a lesson. I know some may take it as immature but shit like that needs to stop and karma needs to deter him from doing that kind of shit again.

Reported him to eBay
Gave Paypal all the evidence

and now it's been escalated to fraud... it just may take upward of 90 days now sadly.

Sorry to hear that you were scammed hard on this one.  Too many bottom feeders on eBay trying funny stuff all the time.

Next time, I think it's ship out the code regardless if the buyer asks for it to be sent to them or not, or just don't send it via non-USPS shipments.

I do like Donut's suggestion to sign them up for some magazine subscriptions, though that's best done from a PC that's not at your home or your work.

Yep, pretty much... I am not that malevolent but I am fighting this.

I learned the hard way a few months back to NEVER sell Digital codes on ebay.  I ended up losing around a 1000 worth of games..ect.

They don't stand behind any digitally sent items.

Spent hours and hours on the phone w/ ebay and paypal to only get screwed in the end.

There are tons of scammers out there that know how to scam the system and it works for them 98% of the time.

I also got screwed w/ chargebacks, so on top of losing the code / money....I also was charged $$ due to the chargeback.

I fought those though non stop intill those were removed by paypal.

Was there any update, OP?

I've sold a few codes in the last couple years on eBay and haven't had any funny business...yet.

Still, I do think I'll start sending the codes out.

It was escalated to fraud.

A third party was brought it to preside over the case, and ultimately sided with the person who purchased the item.

I lost $40 total due to the whole ordeal, but it taught me a valuable lesson.
