Strategy Guides at Goodwill

Lord Darias

CAGiversary!
For the life of me I have never seen a strategy guide at any Goodwills I go to. (There are 5 in my area). Does anyone know if they ever put them on the floor with the books, or send them to corporate to sell online. My white whale is a Skyrim Legendary Edition Hardcover Strategy Guide. Being a CAG I am obviously not going to pay the Ebay prices for one. I got my Pillars Of Eternity Collector's Edition Hardcover Guide at Half Price Books for $40 and that is about my top dollar for a guide. So just wondering if anyone ever sees any strategy guides at Goodwills.

I've seen some before but nothing to write home about. They are hard to find for me because I don't think the workers know what they are and just randomly put them in a section.

I think I got one or two a few years ago, but they aren't that common. My thought is that people just throw them away since they are not "books" instead of donating them.

But side note, good to know that guide is rare. I had no clue. A few years ago when I was doing some writting for Prima Games they sent me one for free that I never opened. Thing is massive, on par with the Kingdoms of Amalur guide.

I found two that I remember. A Fable III hardcover which they sold for $5 that I didn't bother with and a Borderlands 1 which was just the regular $.50 which I got. Otherwise I also never see guides at GW.

Haven't seen too many at goodwill but Savers gets them all the time. They are usually either 29 cents or 1.99. The hardcover thick ones though are usually 3.99

Check children's book sections! I found a guide at a VOA when I looked through a children's book section. The guide happened to be mixed in. And check the rest of the book section too. I'm betting they'd be mixed in with the books themselves.

I've never had an issue finding strategy guides at Goodwill. I've always found them tucked in some corner of the book section. Also found the occasional CE guide but those are more rare. I've purchased probably 100+ guides from local thrift stores over the past year. Having 14 Goodwills around me probably increases my chances of finding them.

I worked at the Missouri/Illinois Goodwill branches for a while.  They now scan all of the books, and it checks the values on amazon.  If the book as a decent value ($5 and up I think...?) then they sell it online.  So for those stores at least, you probably won't be seeing any rare guides on the shelves.

What scum. Hope people stop shopping/donating to them and they all close down.

Yea they've been doing that for other stuff now. Can hardly find anything good now.

Wow, that really sucks. Ugh.

I guess that's one way to make a profit.

I figured they were doing that as I listed my Pillars of Eternity Guide on Ebay for about $110. I checked on it a few days later and noticed 2 different listings for the same guide (in worse condition of course) for $48. I looked at them and they were from Goodwill so that's why I figured I would ask if anyone knew their policy on strategy guides. I get my guides pretty cheap at Half Price Books and I am sure I will come across some next year at yard sales so it doesn't really bother me that Goodwill is trying to squeeze every dollar out of stuff. I still find deals and it makes it even better now when I do with all the competition and online these days.

Video games at my good will have been switched to priced as marked.

When they used to price any game as the same category of dvd movies for $3.16 across the board universally.

In years of hunting goodwill I've only ever found one gaming item I bought. Pokemon Gale of darkness complete mint for $3 in Pacific grove California.

Well it finally happened. I saw a strategy guide at Goodwiil. Street Fighter V softcover sealed for $5. I passed on it. Low profit margin and I only have Hardcover guides in my collection.
