Will Amazon always charge sales tax even though I pay for the total order amount in AMZ GCs, regardless of the state delivered to?

Is this a nationwide thing or is it a state-by-state regulation? I tried to find a list of states that are exempt from sales tax when GCs are the sole payment method, but I could only find a list of states that are charged sales tax for a standard payment method on AMZ.

could be worse  we did not have tax on amazon in the past  had around 1000 in gift cards. they put a wherhouse down in indy making them charge sale taxes.  They said they would  NOT  increase the gift cards by 7% so mostly lost  70 bucks

Anyone else?

I'm just looking for a list of states that don't charge tax when I pay the full balance with gift cards.

If your state doesn't charge tax on orders paid in full with gift cards, please let me know. :)

I think it's state by state, and Amazon has to have some kinda physical presence for them to do it.

I also pay for a LOOOT of amazon stuff via gift cards, and I do have to pay tax here in GA.  (Should know, I preordered World of Final Fantasy and tney mentioned the tax).

If I find out any states don't pay tax, I'll let you know though.

If your state charges tax then you will have to pay tax no matter how you pay. You do not pay tax on the gift cards last I checked so it isnt like you are being double taxed.

You would legally have to file a Use Tax form at tax time and pay the state sales tax (depending on your state). Sure no one ever actually did this, but it seems silly to talk about trying to skirt tax laws online.

If you don't know, you don't know. It's hardly "skirting tax laws" when I'm asking about states where laws don't require taxes on purchases paid in full with gift cards/store credit.

This is legit in some states for GameStop and BestBuy. It's part of why some people like to keep revolving GS and BB credit. Too bad no one on CAG so far knows if it applies to Amazon too.

IIRC, that only applies to trade credit, not gift cards in general.

There's no such thing as a state that doesn't charge tax when your purchase is paid for in full with gift cards, but charges tax when using other payment methods. Otherwise, everyone would only use gift cards to pay for their purchases in order to avoid the tax. Gift cards are non-taxable items.

At a GameStop in another state, I purchased a PS4 while there, tax-free. Why? Because I paid for the entire thing with "store credit" which was loaded onto--betcha can't guess--a giftcard. And I had vaguely remembered stories from others on CAG talking about doing something similar with Best Buy trade credit which was, again, loaded onto a gift card.

It does exist elsewhere. But, like I said a few times, I wasn't sure if it was possible on Amazon too.
