Why the US political system sucks. My biggest 3 reasons.

At least from my standpoint this is what I see as wrong with our system.

1- Democrats and republicans should not exist. How can you have 2 groups trying to run a country for the betterment of all its people when those 2 groups are diametrically opposed to each other? Their job should only be about the well being of this country and the people in it as a whole, there should be no arguing or different opinions based purely on some label they slap on their group. If some people should have different ideas thats fine, but they shouldn't disregard others simply because they "arent part of their gang". This kind of segregation will not help the people as a whole. They are often thoughtless and mindless about the other parties ideas simply because they are pitted against each other which only makes each side more adamant they are right and the other is absolutely wrong. Even regular citizens are all about their side and are quick to dismiss the other side. No one cares about whats best for everyone, they care about their side winning and their side being right. It does nothing but foster into our country the need to be separate, to be part of a group, to take sides instead of fostering togetherness and unity. We should all be on the same side.

2- Religion should not be allowed to even be mentioned in politics or government or congress. Religious beliefs of a few should not be allowed to factor into decision making for millions and millions of people who dont believe in religion, or the millions who have a different religion. Religion has no place for the government that should solely be only worried about the countries well being and cold hard facts and reality. Its fine to have a religion, but using it as a political factor should not even be considered.

3- Congress should be made up of real people. Not career politicians that are catered to and live comfortable lives and are outside of "the common man". Congress really needs to all go and be replaced with people from across the country like fire chiefs, hospital directors, physicians, police chiefs, school super attendants, and so on. Im not saying just anyone but we need people that are involved in areas that matter and can bring a variety of experiences and insight from the actual real world to the table. Im not saying those people are somehow better people but they are more in touch with what happens to large demographics of people and have more experience with how the country runs from the street vs sitting in DC looking at everything from above.

3... nah it would never work they are not stupid enough to do the job :)

1. That's a pretty superficial view of the similarities of the parties and completely ignores the modern positions of them

2. When you get past the superficial analysis of your first point, we arrive at one of the biggest differences between the parties.

3. Most people don't have the resources to run for elected offices at the local and state level muchless federal. It's a lot tougher than you think.

1. Thats why Libertarians and the Greens are angry at the major parties. Besides a striking difference in a couple of areas they are pretty much the same.

2. I am an atheist but I disagree with you. I believe in separation of church and state where there is no official religion and where a religious authority has any power over a political body. In the end as long as religious beliefs are not forced on anyone we should be ok.

3. Congress actually has a lot of good people who are doctors, engineers and regular folk. The problem is that you again have to be a part of the major party to get in. Public funding is given to these parties but not the libertarians or the green party. List of requirements has been growing which ultimately works against any third party candidate. This is why many people have been asking for term limits so we do not have career politicians.

Sure you could get rid of the electoral college but it wouldn't matter in this case.  The media has been slow to update the totals but it actually looks like Trump will win the popular vote as well.

https://70news.wordpress.com/2016/11/12/final-election-2016-numbers-trump-won-both-popular-62-9-m-62-7-m-and-electoral-college-vote-306-232-hey-change-org-scrap-your-loony-petition-now/

I have to say, I was skeptical about what a Trump presidency would look like but since the election, the stock market actually has gone up (the media smugly declared the initial steep drop as a harbinger of things to come but now say very little about the quick bounce back) and predictably, he has tempered his rhetoric and likely is dialing back on his more extreme positions.  It's actually disgruntled liberals that are causing the divide at this point with civil unrest (ironically in cities that voted for Hillary), calls for his assassination, and calls to violate the constitution to overturn the outcome.  Imagine if there was such widespread behavior when Obama was re-elected and the media would be singing a far different tune.

It's actually moderates like me who should be the most disgruntled.  I had no viable candidate in this race, convinced that Clinton certainly would be a disaster, and dismayed that with such an unpopular candidate, the best the Republicans could come up with was Trump.  The end result is further pulling of both parties to the fringes, though I hold out some hope that with Trump so far is saying the right things, he may actually not be a disaster.  Regardless, it's time for everyone to grow up and move on.

Yeah man, that source you quoted sure is moderate.

all the more reason why I say - I vote person - not party...

what party? where -- you bring the beer and Ill bring the brauts and someone else can provide the cooker...

. . . and does the article go far enough to include a lot more - they are out there and many of us run into them in a lot of places....
