Games Freezing/Glitching When Installed To External HD

I decided to attach an external HD to my 360 so that I could keep a back up of all my digital games.
To help ease load times and the burden on a few of my physical games, I decided to install them to the HD as well.

Now I'm finding these games are freezing multiple times during gameplay, even crashing the system and am wondering if this is common.

These are older games, mind you, like
Quake 4, Prey, Sonic 06

Not having that issue with my 360, but my brand new XBox one 1TB with an external 2TB keeps knocking me offline randomly when using streaming apps.  I've uninstalled/reinstalled the apps, moved them back to internal hard drive, and still getting this occasionally.  My wireless access point and associated router is fine, as other devices connect without issue.
