Good show.  I really enjoyed hearing Shipwreck's engineering perspective.

Wombat, You may have to take some initiative and do some deal hunting.  You can find 1 year XBox LIVE cards for about $40, just this week I saw something involving buying a $100 XBox card.  Microsoft is going to sell you the convenience of just plugging in a credit card number and it will all magically happen.  If you want a deal you will have to do that yourself.

I am really excited to hear about Cheapy and Shipwreck's Nintendo Switch experience.  I so wanted to buy this but as the concerns piled up I decided to cancel my pre-order.

Wombat, it's fine to cry during video games :)

The "Happy Birthday, Isaac" scene from the Horizon Zero Dawn was really cute. It made me feel that empathy for the main character on how she has liven her life as an outcast.

You missed the point. Xbox sells live for 60 a year or 10 a month. You get a discount if you go yearly.

Wombat, I get it.  I understand that when you prepay you expect to get a discount.  I don't think NetFlix or Hulu or any of this style services offer discount to pre purchase by the year.

I am really worried that the quality of games they give away each month with XBox LIVE Gold is going to go way down, in order to push people to do this $10 a month plan.

Ship: "It was DEFINITELY NOT Rocky IV"

Wombat consulting internet: "It was Rocky IV"

That was hilarious. Thanks to all involved for that one.

I don't see the big deal with the plastic tab.   Maybe it could be an issue long term.  But they slide in and out pretty easy.

I thought the bigger pain was sliding the straps on the joycons.  You have to apply some force to remove the straps.   We started not using them when we played 1 2 Switch.  It did occur to me that, where the joycons connect to the handheld, that the joycons could develop some play there over time and start to wobble/wiggle a bit.

I thought the system was pretty impressive out of the box.  Very small.  Surprised.  Only 4 years later and the  Wii U is such a beast in comparison and is supposedly a tad slower.  The screen is nice.  The hardware seemed like a step up for Nintendo.  Joycons have that handheld control feel but the sticks are real sticks, just smaller not like what you find on the 3ds.  It has a cool miniature factor but could be too small for some.

My oldest played Zelda and was using the joycons without the grip as much as with.

I played 1 2 Switch with my 10 yr old and then wife and 10 yr old played.  It's well done with the real life video tied with the game.  I can it see it appealing to people who wouldn't buy a Switch.  Reminds me too much of the Wii though and so wow factor isn't there.  Maybe why they didn't pack it in.  I did a lot of that stuff on the Wii.

Bomberman.  We played it.  Had no idea what I was doing.  I didn't buy a $300 Switch to play this game tho.  I got only got cause it was $30 at BB after GCU and the VisaCheckout deal while back.  I'm sure I'll sell it within a month and try to get my money back.  10 yr old had fun with it.

Didn't get a chance to play Zelda myself.  I bought 2 copies cause of that VCO deal and kids were playing.  10 yr old took the Switch in handheld mode and sat next to my 16 yr old who was playing it on the big screen.   I think kids will like that you can take it off the tv and go wherever.   I think local multiplayer has potential to be cool.

The UI has sleek modern look.  Haven't used it much.  It seems fast tho.

So how long until a revised Nintendo Switch, a Switch Lite or like that?

The first thing that came to my mind when you guys were discussing the Switch's reliability was the number of Xbox 360's you guys purchased over the years.

Listened to 488 and got to the part about maids. Seems like at one time, both Wombat and Cheapy had a maid, though. Wasn't Cheapy's pretty crazy with the cherry tomatoes? And something about being upset about Cheapy and Mrs Cheapy leaving their change out? Y'all were tempting her to steal!

Dear CAGcast, I enjoyed hearing your pre-launch opinions on the Nintendo Switch. As a CAG who enjoys his context, I went back and listened to the CAGcast that preceded the Wii U launch (episode #304, "Skum Baggins"). In that episode, on a scale of 1 to 10, Cheapy rated his interest in the Wii U at a 1; meanwhile, he already has a Switch as we speak. I was wondering what made his anticipation in a Nintendo console 'switch' from non-existent in 2012, to day one purchase in 2017.

If I do not get a response, I will assume that the answer is 1 2 Switch. Thank you.

Judging from the podcast, I understand it is because he is now a member of the 1%. I could be wrong. I was taking a dump with the shower on at the time of that discussion.

I hope Wombat gets a Switch... I keep thinking of him playing it on his train ride to work.   He won't pick one up, so I'll just play it on my bus ride to work.

Congrats, Shipwreck's critique of the switch has convinced me to wait for the revision lol. Hopefully it'll be cheaper by then.

Well, a housekeeper is different than a maid. I would love to pay to have a housekeeper come by the house twice a month to do all the cleaning.

A maid practically lives at the house. That would be like Alice from the Brady Bunch.

That's what we have, a person that comes twice a month. Not a Maid. Although in a house with two kids and two full time working parents we probably need someone everyday.

On the issue of the Wii U, and it's lack of a price-drop.

The Wii U did actually get a price drop, it was more expensive when it launched compared to what they are currently charging for it. What Wombat is referring to is the fact that the Wii U did not get nearly as steep of a price drop as is usually expected for a console that has been on the market as long as the Wii U has. And this is very true. The Xbox 360 and PS4 both avoided a true "price-drop" for a very long time by simply releasing versions of their systems with larger and larger hard drives at the same price point. Of course, this was after the initial price had already been slashed significantly.

With the Wii U, a big part of it's lack of price-drop was the minimal sales that the system received. Normally, hardware of this nature benefits from economy of scale. You can reduce the price of individual components when you produce a lot of them. But this kind of savings doesn't come into play until you are producing a LOT of a given item. Having continuously tepid sales deprives a manufacturer of these savings. (and keeps the cost of each produced unit higher) Another problem with the Wii U was the production cost of the gamepad, which was made a required part of the experience from the beginning. The gamepad was a sophisticated piece of tech that significantly added to the production cost of the system as a whole. Even a system re-design to reduce production costs would not have been able to significantly reduce the cost of the gamepad. (which is why they never bothered with a "slim" version)

Nintendo never got a proper chance to reduce the production costs on the Wii U, which is a big part of why they were so reluctant to slash the MSRP. There were also numerous rumors that the Wii U was being sold for a slight loss at launch, which meant that Nintendo was already eating costs on the hardware, something they had usually avoided in the past. All of this is ultimately Nintendo's own fault, as the design of the Wii U contributed most significantly to these problems.

You have it the wrong way round. A maid is someone you hire to do the cleaning, usually every week or two. A housekeeper is someone that works full time at the same place and is the supervisor of the people that do the cleaning and maintenance. A maid is what normal people have; a housekeeper is what the Trumps and Clintons have.

Regarding one percenters I think Cheapy was being too literal. To the occupy Wall Street people that was anyone with household income over $250,000 (also that was the threshold on the so-called millionaires tax proposal). That is more like 2% but you have to consider that some people have variable income (for example an NFL player might make $500k per year but on average he will only play 3 years). Supposedly families with steady income above 250k were the 1% wealthiest. So I'm pretty sure Cheapy is a one percenter and some smelly hippies will be showing up to camp on his lawn. No need to be defensive about it, you earned it and the privilege of paying a marginal tax rate of over 50%.

I've been listening to your podcast for 8 years now. . . I consider myself a big fan. With that said, I realized that you guys have been harping on the negative more than most gaming sites lately. It's almost like you look at something and say to yourself "What is wrong with this?" Don't get me wrong, I appreciate honest feedback and that you don't hold back if you don't like something. . . BUT it does seam that this attitude has become contagious between you three. For instance. . . Wombat's take on Logan "Logan totally deserves all the admiration for everything it does right. But it is far, far from perfect."  That has been his barometer for movies now. . . they have to be perfect.  It's like when I ask my Mom about a restaurant and she starts off by pointing out the 1 thing they did wrong followed by a positive review.

Many years ago a good friend of mine said to me "Do you have to contradict everything that I say?" That statement shook me to the core because I didn't realize that I was doing it. It came naturally. . . I would take a statement and try to find something wrong with it. "It's hot today" . . . "It's not THAT hot."

I'd just like to see you guys enjoy yourselves a little more and perhaps ease up on the negativity.

I'm with Ship. Skipping the optional stuff in Horizon is doing yourself a disservice. You learn so much more about the world and sometimes some NPCs have really funny lines and jokes you won't get from main line dialogue. It's great. Cheapy is missing out. fuck time, enjoy the game. I listen to everything and it's worth it.

Tomato tomato ;)

Webster says a housekeeper is employed to manage a household, and a maid is a servant.

Oh well!

REgular people don't have a maid nor housekeeper.  They pay for a  maid/housekeeping service to come in once a week or twice a month.
