Managed to get turned away at 3 locations for a dead battery, so seems it's YMMV on getting by without a battery.
Good looking out. I was about to buy a laptop for $20 that apparently doesn't work unless plugged in.
Well I'm glad I read the newer responses, as I was also gonna buy another laptop for $35 instead. Would have been a colossal waste of $35 if I didn't just find out the promo is over.

Tried to trade in a 2008 HP DV2700 with Vista but was denied when the stupid laptop wouldn't make it past the boot up screen
Good grief, it's a bad HDD and can't get it installed
Anyone have luck trading in a machine with bad hard drive?

Was denied at the first store that I went to. The cashier had a printout of the promo and insisted that I must buy the Samsung laptop to get the promo. I told her other people were able to get the deal without having to buy the laptop (no I did not mention CAG), but she kept saying I must buy the laptop. I left and went to another BB and the cashier did not give me any trouble at all. Got my $75 gift card, thanks OP.
Yeah same thing happened to me! I ended up going to another store to and had no problems at all.

I would guess it was basically being exploited...due to a combination of employees not enforcing the rules (ie. letting one person trade in multiples) and/or people skirting the rules themselves (going different days, going to different BB's, etc.)
I guess you could argue they didn't expect to get such old laptops, but that's their own naivety...and kind of seemed like the entire point of the promo. Yeah, maybe they were getting junk, but it also is driving business. It's not like they were giving out cash.
I've seen numerous customers get banned for abusing the trade-in limit. It is 3 of any specific item per year, and technically 3 laptops (no matter what company) count as the 3 per year. If you abuse the program continuously, they will ban you from doing trade-ins not only at BB, but everywhere that does legitimate trade ins. Your driver license is how everything is tracked, making a new phone number/account won't do anything.
I reckon you are right though with there being lazy employees who just let anyone trade in anything. I had a feeling this one was going to end early after see all the piles of crap people tried to bring in to trade.
"Umm sir, the screen has a gigantic crack down the middle and no operating system"
"I want to speak to your manager right now, this is unacceptable!!"

Apparently I can trade in an old Acer laptop that overheats for $80 even WITHOUT the promo. I'll need to clean it up a bit so that it falls in the "good" as opposed to "fair" category, or else it would be $72, which is still not too bad.

Yea, I can trade my 10 year old laptop for about $58 and change. But still, $75 is sweeter.
