Acceptable laptop temps

I got a new gaming laptop and the GPU/CPU temps are kinda nuts. 

Load temps are around 92C for the i7-6700HQ and 87C for the 6GB GTX 1060. Idle temps are 46C/50C, which are fairly close to what my current laptop with i7-4720HQ and GTX 965m have. 

Are those load temps worrying? I did some research on the laptop (Asus GL702VM) and it seems like it runs hot, just don't know if that's entering dangerous territory or not. 

What are the temps when you're running a fairly intensive game?

What temps are they during normal use?

Also, have you already popped into your bios to see the default settings on everything?  If it's a gaming laptop, it might have come with some adjusted settings you may not want, so should probably take a look if you haven't already.

The load temps I posted are appear to the upper limited after running Fallout 4 maxed out, Metro Last Light Bench maxed, or Witcher 2 maxed out w/ Ubersampling or whatever it's called at 1080p. Also tried Witcher 2 at low settings at 4K (external display), same results. I don't really have any other intensive games to try. 

Temps for normal use (lets say around 20% CPU utilization) is like 60C (GPU goes up to 55C, since it's a shared cooler). 

Everything should be good settings wise, I did the BIOS update which was supposed to address overheating issues. Everyone says this laptop runs hot so the normal use temps don't bother me but the temps during gaming are nuts. 

You may just have to do some manual tweaking in the bios then to see if you can resolve the higher than usual temps.

Was the bios update supposed to tweak all the fans settings too?

The BIOS updated is supposed to make it run better. I actually played all of those games before the update and the games would clip/skip (not sure what it's called, it's not stuttering or slowdown- games would literally hang for split seconds) quite a bit. Did some research and that's how I found out about the BIOS. The update fixed that but the temps were no different. Some people are under-volting the CPU but that's too much for me... this thing is going back.

I'll stick with my old laptop and hope I get a deal on a gaming laptop with a better cooler, like my old laptop has. Luckily I didn't sell it yet.

It also could be a driver update issue that was faulty out of the box, and may have needed to be updated through device manager, as that video issue sounds like the gfx driver wasn't working properly.

Sometimes the driver aren't the most up to date out of the box, and you have to supplement them afterwards as a result of a defect there. 

Sounds like it's probably more of a hassle than you really want to deal with anyways though, so send that sucker back. ;D

Everything drivers/settings wise was good. I think this laptop basically sacrificed good cooling for a lower profile design. My old laptop is 3/4 inches thicker at it's thickest point and weighs 4 pounds more. They're both Asus gaming laptops so I thought they'd be fairly equal in terms of build, but there's a huge difference in quality and design. 

Oh well, lesson learned. 

I'd ask around to see if anyone has undervoltaged the CPU.  Deciding if I am going to keep this Acer I got and read it runs hot but if you drop the voltage a little it keeps the temps in check.  Not saying it will work for you but worth looking at / maybe trying.

That's what people were doing- under-volting the CPU.

I'm not saying I couldn't follow instructions/figure out, but I decided against doing it b/c it the end of the day, it's simply a poorly designed laptop. I'm back on my G751JL and happy with the max 83C CPU and max 69C GPU temps, even if the settings are 1/2 what the newer laptop could push.

For both CPU and GPU, I guess its 40C while idle and not more than 85C under load. I would advise a laptop cooler to help lower temperature,
