I typically see 4TB HDDs around $90-$100 so twice as much for +$40 seems like a good idea. PS4/X1 games are getting pretty big in size. My wife is going to kill me for spending so much on the PS4 and accessories.

8TB Western Digital External USB 3.0 HDD

if i needed another storage option, this would be among the most cost effective routes @ ~$17.50 per TB of storage.

good find, thanks OP

Same price as Black Friday deals. People reported getting mixed drives in these.

I have this drive for my XBOX ONE X and its great..but there is one issue that I hope someone can give me advice on ..so I keep my xbox one x on instant on..the drive will blink even though the console is technically off..so I put a piece of electrical tape on it and that nipped it in the bud..my X1X is in my bedroom and my TV stand is made of glass..and last night I just happened to look up and I saw on the ceiling something flashing..I go to see what it is and yes, underneath the hard drive I guess they have air vents in the enclosure to prevent overheating, you can see lights coming out of it..so I want to know, what can I do in order to minimize this..otherwise the hard drive is PERFECT, silent, no issues so far except for those annoying lights

Honestly, your best bet might be to spend a few $ and buy a new enclosure for it. Taking the drive out is super simple and is easy to reverse.

You could just remove the rubbery fiber optic cable that passes light from the adapter. They pop out in the externals of this type that I've opened.

This only matters if you are shucking these and putting them in your computer. Anyone here using it as an external drive for your PS4 don't need to worry about that.

Here's more information for those curious about the differences in drives.

Someone mentioned that I could download this wd utility software and I could turn off the lights but Im not sure its a good idea to mess with the software especially since if I Connect the hard drive to my PC it wont even recognize it anyway(Since I already formatted it to my XBOX ONE X)

Your console is basically a computer and the drive is implemented in the same way. There's no failure prevention or redundancy feature in the case that you lose when you shuck it. People who are using these in RAID/NAS configurations are less likely to lose data than people using them on consoles if the refurbed drive fails on them. Lower cache size and slower drive speed also mean slightly longer load times, but having to redownload your entire game library and all of your saves is a pain in the ass.

There's an option in your XBX preferences that turns the drive off when console is off and it should turn off the light in instant-on mode. Also try turning off auto update, since that starts the drive up whenever an update for any of your games is released.

Literally every time I see a deal on this, I'm completely tapped out on money.

Ugh, one day I'll upgrade my Xbox One's 4tb drive to this...

Yeah I already have it set to "Turn off hard drive when console is off" in power and startup..doesnt make a difference the hard drive still blinks and lights up..now the auto updates that I have not tried yet..from what Ive been told the only way to make sure it doesnt light up is if I put the xbox one in energy saving mode but I dont want to do that..so what I did is I took a piece of black paper underneath the glass tv stand where the hard drive sits and I taped it so that way I dont see the light at all anymore. I do wonder, if there was ever a power outage, would that ruin the drive once Im able to turn it back on..I mean the hard drive is technically off but its still blinking lights so something is working in there

I was referring to the 3.3v pin that is an issue for those who install them in computers. Which requires a slight modification, or a SATA-to-Molex adapter, I believe.

These 8TB drives are the same rpm (5400 rpm) as what comes in the PS4, and a higher cache,128/256 MB vs 8 MB for the PS4.

http://www.ps4storag...rd-drive-specs/

Of course a 7200 rpm would be better, or a SSD/HHD hybrid.

All in all, I just think that no matter the quality of the drive you get with this external one, it will be an improvement over the stock hard drive. These drives should have a life expectancy near or that of a WD Red. It is possible that the white label one's could be refurbished Reds, but I just don't believe that's the case. They might just not meet the standards to be a true Red, but are still of good quality.

Doubt you'll see an 8TB at this price until next BF.

Question about the WD Software that you can download that turns off the LED Light Setting..are they talking about the blinking light in front of the drive or the lights in the enclosure..just want to know..if there is NO way to turn off the lights in the enclosure will just leave things alone

I bought this before black friday when it was $130 and been running it on my Xbox One X for the last 2 weeks, no problems at all and its great to have 8TB.  It does require a seperate power plug, not just USB powered but that should be expected with the size.

I'm pretty sure both drives are in fact red drives.  WD doesn't have white drives.

Updates or downloading. I bought a 4 TB with my launch console and it does that all the time. Still be spinning and the blue light be flashing. Nothing to worry about
