PSA: Amazon Prime going up to $119/yr starting May 11

wish they would add an option to save money by dropping certain services, dont use prime video and that is one of the major reasons they cite for the cost increase. really getting to the point that its no longer worth it just for 2 day shipping.

mine recently expired and for the first time since prime started I didn't renew

more price and I only enjoy it for shipping and rewards on the cc (and shipping is nothing like it used to be nor is customer service)

not even close to worth it for me anymore as idc about streaming and all the other side shit I never used

sad because of how great the old days were but everything ends eventually

I guess with so many stores price matching amazon now and having items in stock near you ppl aren’t really renewing anymore so the price goes up ..

wont be renewing when mine expires in February. they need to have more options, like a shipping only prime b/c i never use the prime video stuff and i got a feeling thats part of the reason the price is increasing.

Amazon’s gotta pay for that new LOTR show! It’s easier to let my membership lapse especially considering no more game discounts on CEs.

They announced today that they have over 100 million Prime subscribers and their stocks are going up because of it. Maybe next year it will tail off with this price increase.

I'm voting for the first politician that promises to bring a shipping only option for Prime and a giant discount on a bunch of 360 digital games and dlc that never goes on sale and probably only sell 3 copies a year at full price

I don't care what their hair looks like or what fruit color their face is or what nasty place they put their donger

it's time to make America great for the first time

Seriously, what's the PSA going to do for me?  I either use Amazon enough to pay it or I don't.

I don't know why you would buy things from Amazon instead of best buy, if amazon charges sales tax in your area.

Gamers club is 15 dollars a year and works on CEs and used games...

Unless you like paying for Bezos to bring you groceries. Anything you can buy on amazon can usually be found cheaper somewhere else without sales tax.

IMO Amazon has really gone down hill since they put others out of business. Their prices are higher now and many times items that claim 2 day shipping arrive in 4+ days for me. I used to just buy from amazon without comparing prices because they always had the best deals, that’s definitely not true anymore..

Yup. I can't believe I'm going to say this, but Walmart doesn't need a membership for free shipping. Might as well at this point. I'm still under the student program... Now if will excuse me. I feel a little dirty typing that. I'm to take a shower now.

I have had 4-5 months "free" prime added to my account cause if it's been a day late... I complain as much as I can. My prime ends in Feb 2019... Just went over there to set the reminder when it will renew. So I can tell Amazon to KMA.

When it's late and i complain, I either get the item refunded or a month of prime. Only once did I get I think 25% knocked off the cost. My "Pre-orders" of games/movies/etc... have arrived 3 days late in most cases, their answer is pretty much "I should have pre-ordered earlier" cause they ran out.

Would love to have a Prime shipping only option, I use none of the other "perks"

also lets be fair in addition to the complaints

we can also thank ourselves for milking the bleep outta the system and customer service over the years

squeezing and taking advantage of every drop of that prime juice at every opportunity

Been a Prime member since the beginning -- and this is the first time I've considered dropping it. I have my folks on my account though, and know they get a lot of value out of it.

Decisions, decisions.

Amazon isn't hurting for money, this is just them being greedy.

I will be ending my Prime subscription too, when it expires in January.

This. Hopefully enough people boycott this BS. $120 is too much.

Like another person here said, I couldn't care less about Amazon video (same for Amazon music). Drop that crap off, and allow me to pay just $50/year again.
$10/month for Prime Video, 2 day shipping, Kindle and Music services...

Yet people gladly pay $8-10 (or more) for Netflix...

So can you cancel your current membership, get refunded the prorated amount, and then sign up again before may 11th?
Someone on twitter posted that you can buy a gift membership. With your own email as the recipient, set to arrive the day of your current membership expiring.

I'll just be cancelling mine. I only have it for the shipping, and honestly their shipping speed and packing quality is no longer worth it with other online retailers offering free shipping and/or much better prices.

Netflix is about 100x better than prime video

just youtubing "full movies" is better than prime video

prime video is factually better than a stick to the eye or an arrow to the knee though

The problem is a lot of people, myself included, really only find value in Prime for the shipping. I never use the music or kindle services and I maybe use the video option 2-3 times a year. They need to segment it out and have a tiered subscription program instead of forcing people to pay for other services they don’t want or need just to take advantage of the main benefit of being a Prime subscriber.

You wanna be careful when you do stuff like that. Eventually Amazon will get pissy and block you from their services. They really hate it when people return items... if that happens too often, they send you a backhanded apology, then they limit or end your account. That's what I understand from reading Reddit posts on the subject, anyway.

I know I'm in the minority, but  I don't mind the price hike. It's only another $1.66/month. I shop at amazon way too much to let a measly $20 bother me.

Deal breaker for me.  I agree, they need to split the program up. Yes I use video and music but if I could save money I sure wouldn't.

I was already on the fence when I renewed last month, I think I'm out after this year expires. I can't justify the cost. I only watch maybe two shows on their video service that I can certainly live without and my experience with two day shipping recently has been spotty at best.

As the price goes up and the "shipping only" crowd lets their subs expire Amazon will no doubt still do great but I wonder if we are getting to the point of opening up some opportunity for the very stores that Amazon spent so many years destroying

Higher Amazon prices, higher prime and slower shipping certainly seems like something that could be creating a little hole for some competition

to creep back in

Hopefully we can catch the wave of another company like the early days of the Zon

Amazon just paid $130 million for the rights to stream Thursday Night NFL games for the next 2 years.   That's why the price is going up.

I've got an Alexa ecosystem in my home so unfortunately I won't be cancelling.

Returns are another thing, I'm complaining about Amazon not fulfilling their end of their contract...

They guarantee 2 day shipping, and when it's 7 days... it's not my fault.

Last year I think I had on average 1 complaint a month.. December had 3.

I'm not abusing the system, I'm complaining about not getting what I paid for. If they want to give me a free month... thats their option. And the full refund items were pretty much all under $10.

When I order something for a family members birthday and it is scheduled to show up the day before their birthday... and actually shows up 5 days late... Sorry, but I'm not going to just say "ok... thats fine, it's my fault"

The family member was out here on vacation on her birthday, I had to spend $10 to SHIP the item to her after she left.

Most of the people getting their service canceled are people abusing the system, getting a refund or return cause a corner is bent etc.

Side note, as someone else mentioned Netflix etc.. I don't stream movies/tv/music with any service. That part of prime never appealed to me. When they upped it to $99 I almost canceled then. I kept it cause Amazon wasn't able to charge me Tax.. So I was buying pretty much everything on amazon I could. Now if there is a 3rd party vendor on amazon that don't charge me tax.. I buy from them instead ;)

The only reason i'll keep Prime.. My parents do have me buy stuff on amazon also, I may "pass on the increase" to them. ;)

I just had a horrible amazon experience just last week. I had a package that was supposed to be delivered in two days still not show up on day 4 so I figured I would use the customer service chat to see if I could get a free month of prime or something from it like I've heard others doing. The conversation ended when the customer server said LITERALLY these words: "What do you want? I can't make the package arrive any faster ma'am."... My name is Mike... The customer service rep said "How can I help you today Mike?" at the start of the conversation...

When the package finally arrived the next day it was delivered by amazons new in house delivery service, which is like uber for packages. So I'm just walking back from checking my mail and I'm just heading up my front steps when I hear a car slam on its break and screech its tires at the end of my driveway. I turn around to see a large black SUV and, as I'm standing there wondering if I'm about to be shot, I see a large woman climb out of the driver side and scream from 20 yards away "AMAZON!" across my yard in a quiet suburban neighborhood. So I angrily walk back to the end of my driveway to retrieve my package from the extra from 'orange is the new black' while trying to ignore the moving curtains in my neighbors window. She basically throws the package at me before peeling off again.

I'm sure most here could afford the extra $20, but, personally speaking, it's more about the principle of paying for shit we don't want/aren't using as well as other "expenditures" Amazon is subsidizing with the increase.

They know they have their customers by the balls. They're like, "What are you going to do - cancel your Prime membership and waste time and gas running around to different retailers over $1.66/mo.? Good luck with that."

I've been prime free for over a year now and don't miss the overpriced free shipping at all. Anything I do end up getting from Amazon tends to be household items that qualify for free shipping through S&S (which I abuse the shit out of) but it barely amounts to more than an item every 2 months. Target tends to have way better deals with gift cards anyway.

To put things in perspective, it has been years since I had a retailer PM Amazon. Best Buy has taken care of me just fine and I've been elite for 3 years in a row just from buying games and electronics (almost all of which are a PM to another retailer or have GCU). Trust me when I say you'll be just fine cutting the cord because I've not missed it at all.

Packaging quality has gone down to the point I just expect stuff to come damaged a decent percentage of the time, especially when they put books with dust jackets in an oversized box. CE's come with damaged boxes too much for my liking. Have bought some things recently (not third party) that were counterfeit. I don't use Prime Video or music streaming, just the alleged two-day shipping. Speaking of which, many times does not come in two business days. Yeah, been a Prime customer since the beginning and have about 10 months left. Cannot see myself renewing. I almost cancelled after the first price hike to $99, but it was "just" worth it so I stuck with it. $10 a month is a good deal for some, but not for me.

Bezos is definitely getting too greedy for his own good. Even the monthly Prime sub has seen a couple of price hikes recently. When I started the monthly sub was maybe $7.99(?) to start. Now it's $12.99 plus tax a month, they started charging sales tax in NM in April or May of last year. If the price keeps spiking I'll probably cancel it. Speaking of which I better check and see if the price has changed along with the regular and student subs.

I've also begin to notice that they're locking certain items behind Prime memberships too. It's like they're trying to push people into paying through the nose just to buy those items.

Memberships are easy money. Once you hook someone, it's hard to drive them to a point where they can't justify a expense they have reasonably had for a long period of time. In the days of auto-renewal it's basically free money.

I've noticed this too and it seems to me that Bozo wants to eventually turn Amazon into a membership retailer, like the world's largest online Sam's Club/CostCo. Maybe it's just my paranoia speaking.

Amazon doesn't sell anything I can't live without and I'll continue to sporadically buy from them since most my purchases are more than the free shipping minimum anyhow. I still go to a B&M grocery store every week for food/household needs, but I won't play ball with a "all in one" lump membership fee. Give me a reasonable Prime Shipping cost and I'll shut up.

I agree that once people are locked in to a membership for a long time it's easier to justify the price. I almost canceled my monthly sub after they changed they changed the price to $11 a month plus tax. If it gets to the point that I can no longer justify the price of the monthly Prime sub ($13 plus tax atm), I'll gladly cancel it.

And what gets me with subs to their other services is even though someone is already a Prime member they still charge extra on the side for said services. I would definitely like to see a Prime Two-Day Shipping only sub as I don't care for Prime Video, Music, or Kindle either.
