HD Link (HDMI) for OG Xbox is up at Amazon

I'm not familiar with this product. Is there any benefit / drawback to my component cables for the OG Xbox?

If you're happy with component output, then no, probably not. It's really aimed at the use-case that you don't have any non-hdmi inputs on your set and don't want to run through a converter

Hey thanks for the update, can't wait to finally play Halo MP in HD while eating my Freedom Fries and listening to Sum 41. I sure hope the last Matrix movie is good and not boring and convoluted.

personally my tv only has HDMI input, so I've been waiting for these to come back in stock since I finally got around to fixing up my original xbox. MS is making good strides on BC on the XB1 but there are still some good games in the back catalogue worth a play.

Hmm tempting.  I just installed CoinOPS 8 on my OG Xbox.  HDMI is certainly more convenient than component.

FYI: some models suffer interference with this cable (read reviews for details). Also it only passes 2-channel stereo, no surround. It’s good to have, just know what your getting into!

Cost of an OG Xbox and new 3.5" hard drive is extremely cheap. That's the only thing holding me back from getting this, as I'd feel bad spending about as much on it as those two items together.

Thanks, OP.

And yes, Kaijuboy makes good points; these things can cause issues on some specific models.

But I bought them to try out.  And down the road, fewer and fewer audio receivers are going to retain component cables - so these will be nice to have if they work on my ol' Xbox.  Shame about no Dolby Digital, though.

They did confirm on facebook that this batch has NOT been updated to address reports of interference, just a heads up if anyone was hoping to upgrade that previously had an issue with it.

Edit: looks like Amazon is adding more stock than the initial quantities, probably still processing them in at the warehouse

Also if you're on the fence, keep in mind this cable has been OOS for 2+ months and has only been attainable by paying almost $100 on eBay, if you have the need, I would buy now

This thread has inspired me to look for cheap original Xbox games on eBay....which could be a two-fer if Microsoft does something crazy at E3 in three weeks like announce disc-based, system-level OG emulation on Xbox One at E3.

Yeah, the price of the games they announce bc for immediately spikes, I'm glad they've been adding them to Xbox live also. I keep a modded Xbox around but the enhancements they're doing to let the xbone run them at higher resolution is really nice

Fyi the Xbox one already does system level emulation of some Xbox titles they added it earlier this year

These have been OOS for months unless you're willing to pay $90+ on eBay

Available for ordering for $24.99 on Amazon, expected to ship in a week

I own one of these Pound cables for the original Xbox, and it works well for what it does. Does it make an original Xbox work on a HDTV? Yes. Does it upscale the original image? Only on the games that it is supposed to. If you are buying it because you think it will make Xbox games look as good as Xbox 360 or Xbox One games, it won't do that, but they will be playable. It's like watching a show that was shot in standard definition on a HDTV today. That's the best analogy I can come up with.

That said, it was a solid investment for me. But I own hundreds of original Xbox games that I bought years ago, and I still enjoy playing them. I even removed the clock capacitor from my original Xbox a few months back which I recommend that anyone with one of the earlier versions of the system should do since a leaking clock capacitor could possibly kill your system. But, I would only pay the lower price for the cable and wait for it to come back in stock.

The units up for order at $24.99 are official stock from Pound, they've been waiting this month for Amazon to inventory and add them in.

Interesting about the clock capacitor I'll have to look into that, I think I'm on a 1.6 though

And yeah, this is mainly aimed at a specific HDMI need, if you're happy with your component cable you won't see any benefit

Edit: I guess it's oos again, that's surprising given how many they had, hopefully eBay sellers aren't clearing them out to flip

Update, Amazon filed a claim against the company making the cables that they were fake even though the maker is there one who added them, oos till resolved

Don't remove the clock capacitor if you own a 1.6. Later models of the Xbox don't have the leaking clock capacitor problem, so you don't need to do it on a 1.6. If I'm not mistaken, removing the clock capacitor from inside a 1.6 might actually harm the system.

thanks for the info, I'll have to double check exactly which model I have, been awhile

Ordered one right after I removed the capacitor on my halo xbox.

seems like it'll be bite before they are shipped.

Here's a Reddit link for anyone who might need to do the clock capacitor removal procedure on their original Xbox systems:

https://www.reddit.com/r/originalxbox/wiki/clock_capacitor

It's not difficult at all with the right tools, but it is necessary since a leaky clock capacitor might pose a fire hazard. I took mine apart, removed the clock capacitor, cleaned the motherboard, dusted the system's internals, and put it back together in under an hour, and it still runs great.

One of the connectors on my Xbox's component cable is starting to fall apart... I really should consider getting one of these. Then again, I've got that Raspberry Pi, and it handles retro games at least as well as the Xbox does... decisions, decisions.

I might pick this one up, but between this and the $150 price for a Gamecube HDMI adapter when I already have component cables for both has me looking for just a good component converter. Does anyone have one that actually works well? I've gone through a couple of them that had issues.

When I first got this cable I experienced the interference problems and I thought I had a bad cable, at the same time I had gotten one of the green Halo consoles, swapped it in and no problems. I think it's the console more than the cable.

$150? yikes. I would just get a Wii and that one hdmi adapter that has like 0 latency

Oh what the hell, I'll roll the dice.  Like my grandmother used to say, if you can't bring OutRun 2 to a 16:9 screen, bring a 16:9 screen to OutRun 2.

i just inject gamecube games to my wii u

I use Nintendont on my Wii, and it runs most games... but it doesn't work with the Game Boy Player, of course. That puts me back on square one. I mean, there's a GBA emulator for the Wii, but I have no idea if games will play at full speed (my guess is "no").

I use Nintendont the channel not the forwarder on my Wii U. I was too lazy to hack the vwii so I just make do with colboot haxchi. GameCube games look really good. I really haven't bothered messing around with portable games. In my opinion they look horrible on a 4k and well I've always hated the Wii U gamepad but virtual console games do look nice on it. I'm nearing 40 and we'll I'll much rather plant myself in front of a huge tv instead of handhelds lol

Are you both using 2.5" portable hard drives? I'm using a Seagate 1TB Backup Plus that was reported as working on the compatibility page, but it only does so occasionally and I have to restart my Wii often. Even bought the USB port Y cable and get the same results. It's formatted in FAT32, and I even ripped from my own games.

On my Wii I had an external USB 2.0 drive with its own power supply, haven't messed with that console in a while but I dont recall having problems. On my Wii U I use a 2.0 drive with a y cable and sometimes I have problems because it has to be plugged in a certain way, meaning one cable likes to pair with one USB port and the second cable will only pair with the other USB port. Sometimes when I unplug it and get the two cables switched around the Wii U won't recognize the drive. It happens on the front and back USB port of the Wii u

About the same amount I paid for my backup OG Xbox 10 years ago..two OG Xboxes, no more HDMI TV's... Ordered one. Thanks for the heads up.

Thanks to josecortez for the capacitor heads up. I'll check my OG xboxen asap. Guy posts quality for my phone AND and saves my vintage hardware? Where's the "saint" button on CAG?? :)

Thanks for the props, buddy. Just saving all my OG Xbox fans a headache or too. I hope everyone's machines will last as long as my launch model has.

FYI: got my cable in and it works on my v1.4 without any interference issues! So there is hope for people without a v1.0-v1.3 and have a later Xbox!

Thanks for the update. Still waiting for mine to ship. I chose the slow shipping for the buck toward digital goods promotion

I have had this cable for months and it works on my launch model great. I actually still benefitted from this thread because I had no idea about the clock capacitor issue. I took the capacitor out even though it had yet to leak ( I actually didn't rehook up my OG Xbox until this hdmi cable originally came out, so the system sat in the closet for years). So now, my launch console should be good and reliable.

Glad to hear that the "operation" went well and that the "patient" is doing fine. It really is an easy fix even if you've never cracked open a video gaming system in your life!

Damn, glad I pre-ordered one. Surprised at how many are clamoring for one. I don't even have an OG Xbox, though now I might want to find one for sale

Those bad boys are all over Craigslist although there's no telling what condition they're in. You could probably score one with a handful of games for really cheap. OG Xbox is in that sweet spot right now where most of the best games for the system aren't really in demand even though it's retro, so you can still find a used one for a pretty good price. Kind of like PS3 is, but a generation behind.

That would surprise me because Microsoft has been greenlighting those games lately and they run as if they got a remaster treatment. Quite honestly even if I wanted to play old games, I'd still play it on the One S lol

I was searching on Amazon to find options to get my Dreamcast VGA box to work through HDMI and I found that one of the Pound Technology HDMI cables for the original Xbox is still in stock for $29.99 on Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/HD-Link-Cable-Original-Xbox-System/dp/B07D19QQHW/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1530282287&sr=8-4&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=pound+hdmi+cable&dpPl=1&dpID=41FP1-w1HtL&ref=plSrch

On a related note, I played Outrun 2006: Coast to Coast on my OG Xbox this morning with this cable, and it looked great on my 39" Vizio even in 480i. This is a good item to own if you still play OG Xbox games. Off from work today so I will be catching up on the backlog starting with Arctic Thunder.

yeah it's a nice product, and they redesigned it recently so that the HDMI cord is a breakout from the box instead of fully inlined, I do still have issues with interference in the picture though, I'm not sure if it's isolated to specific systems or what, Pound doesn't seem to really have it narrowed down either, it does sound like it's specific to the systems themselves. Hopefully someone can figure out 'what' is causing it and come up with a hardware level fix.

Edit: if anyone can report which version Xbox they're using the cable with and whether they see interference or not maybe that would help get to the bottom of it?

Here is a Reddit link that explains how the date that the Xbox was manufactured determines what model you might have:

https://www.reddit.com/r/originalxbox/wiki/revision

My primary OG Xbox is a 1.2. I remember not being able to afford one at launch, so I ended up buying one of the ones that came in the Jet Set Radio Future/Sega GT 2002 bundles after I saved up enough money to get it. At the time, I had a girlfriend who was willing to buy it for me, but I refused since I knew that meant that I would be "pwned" from that moment on.

My secondary OG Xbox is a 1.6 that I found at a yard sale. Because all of my custom soundtracks are already on the 1.2, I rarely plug in the 1.6 although it works just fine. Neither of mine have been modded.

Anyway, mine doesn't seem to have any interference on either Xbox, but I'm using the first version of the Pound cable. Maybe I don't know what the interference is supposed to look like.
