I think they knew it was going to be of big interest, which is why they bundled it in and tried to be so mysterious at first.
But I mean come on Nintendo, they skipped doing anything around when E3 would have been, they have to have something to show that is of legitimate interest. Are they going into the Fall with two new consoles from competitors and have absolutely no reason to consider them (not that Switch is a competitor to next gens)?
The reality of the current world situation is probably why we haven't had proper directs, or any big games announcement in regards to multiple big titles over time. The directs that were rumored to have happened back in January I believe were planned, and just didn't happen due to covid-19. Late December early January, most places that deal in big numbers in China knew shit was getting real, and delays would be coming soon. "N" early on stated the OG NS would have production issues, and they couldn't say how bad it would get, and when things would get back to normal.
"N" only wants to release it's biggest games, when they can also best move hardware along with, like with Animal Crossing, by having new systems, promotions, CE's, etc. Since AC released, there are no systems to be had, and while inventory happens pretty often, it doesn't last long. Until "N" can get a real handle on production, delays, JC drift, etc, I don't expect them to make to many big announcements, and when they do, it will be 6-8 weeks out, with the stealth reveals like they've been doing.
Can you imagine how much business they would have lost out on if systems hadn't have been as available when AC was released? Prices on the secondary market for systems is still high, so why release AAA titles, when you can't sell the major qty of systems you normally do for such releases? You also have to imagine how bad the worlds economy will look in 2, 3 or even 5 months from now? The same way we all are seeing HUGE changes to life, expect to see huge changes across all avenues, and what we are seeing now is just the tip of the iceberg.
