Would you get a Wii U now?

I ask, because GameStop has a ridiculously good deal. Comes with Mario, Splatoon and Smash Bros for $150. That is pretty nuts.

Thoughts? Idk. Idk!

IMO no reason to own Wii U unless purchasing for cheap on Craig’s List or something (coming from someone who owns both Wii U and Switch). Nintendo has or will be porting most notable games released on the Wii U to the Nintendo Switch (the only Wii U exclusive games worth owning a Wii U for at this point are Super Mario 3D World, Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101, Paper Mario: Color Splash, Mario Party 10, Super Smash Brothers Wii U and Super Mario Maker but I would guess majority of these titles end up on the Switch at some point).

Worth noting that the Wii U Console/Games resale value are terrible which is not usual for Nintendo products. It’s almost like everyone wants to forget the Wii U ever existed (opinion which matches poor sales volume for the console).

Got the black one at a yard sale two years ago for $80. Still haven't hooked it up yet. My PS4's got all my time right now.

Thing is idk how much I will play anything. With my work schedule it is just so hard. I basically only use my 3ds because of that

Basically my views on the Wii U. Nintendo cannibalized the Wii U's library to fill in the release lulls on the NS, and I imagine they will go back to doing it again with the remaining Wii U exclusives being ported to NS in 2019 since there's no major release in 2019 (Mario, Zelda, Smash or Pokemon) to keep a consistent library going and to dry out any remaining Wii U games on shelves (still see Mario Maker, Pikmin 3, and New Super Mario/Luigi Bros on shelves here and there).

And (could be wrong here) I also feel like the Wii U doesn't have the fanfare that other Nintendo "failures" like the N64 and GC had.

If you can get one cheap enough and don't need Smash Bros next week then I say go for it. The only two games that are must haves that are Switch exclusive are Mario and the yet to be released Smash Bros.

On WiiU you can play Zelda:BotW, Mario Kart, Mario 3D World, Mario Maker, current Smash Bros, Pikmin, New Super Mario Bros & Luigi, Hyrule Warriors, Captain Toad and Bayonetta 2.

It's true Nintendo has continued to dig up Wii U software to "shovel" onto the Switch. I get it, but even I didn't think they'd go so far into porting those old games (and then also have the gall to charge full price for them).

Anyways, I wouldn't bother with a Wii U at this point UNLESS  any of those titles that are highly unlikely to be ported suit your fancy. Below are the ones I think no reasonable Nintendo corporate higher-up would ever green-light to the Switch.

1. Tokyo Mirage Sessions: A good game, but one that never caught on, and failed not only in the States, but also Japan. While a future port is plausible, it would go against every Nintendo edict and probably every reasonable business sense. Nintendo/Atlus would have to accept losing money to go through the money, time, and trouble of fixing this to bring it to Switch.

2. Devil's Third: It still boggles my mind that Nintendo actually printed physical copies of this game. It's nowhere near as bad as critics scored it, though it's certainly far from great. As a mindless third-party action game that isn't afraid to wear 80's cheese on its shoulder, however, it is more often fun than not.  Also, besides Eat Lead, you're unlikely to find a main character who so easily is mutant foil of Arnold, Van Diesel, and Norris all rolled into one.

3. Project Zero 5 (a.k.a. Fatal Frame 5): That Nintendo saw fit to print discs of Devil's Third for the States, but not Fatal Frame 5 is probably more mind blowing than the fact that they even printed Devil's Third. Europe, however, got a physical edition though it'll run you a pretty penny to get one (and you'll have to mod your Wii U, which I'm told is now fairly easy). Nintendo has never seemed much interested in supporting this franchise, and looking at the way it treated the last two games (the Wii version didn't make it out of Japan, either), a betting man would likely put greater odds at seeing a new Earthbound on Switch before Fatal Frame 4 or 5.

4. Game and Wario: More a tech demo for the Wii U gamepad than a full-fledged game, Nintendo released this one to little to no fanfare, and reviewers quickly dismissed the game as nothing more than a short distraction. The criticism is not without merit, but like many games internally made by Nintendo, this one has kernels of brilliance. Tech demo or not, I thought this game did a far better job at showing off the potential of the Wii U than Nintendoland ever did.

And a few other honorable mentions: Xenoblade Chronicles X; Kirby and the Rainbow Curse; and Wonderful 101. I actually think all three of these might find their way to the Switch. The only one that I'm doubtful about is Wonderful 101 - that game flopped big on Wii U, and that was despite a lot of advertising. I'm unsure Nintendo wants to pay Platinum or anyone else to bother porting this franchise, unless they twist it in a way that includes other bigger stars from their roster.

I bought a Wii u last holiday season during the b2g1 preowned deals at GS (it included consoles). I think it was well worth it. Super Mario 3D World was fun, and now I use it to play Wii games. I prefer the Wii motion plus controllers over Joycons for active games (dancing and sports). I built a small library from all the pre-owned deals at GS, and I intend to go through it, as they are primarily Nintendo games I never got to (Super Mario Galaxy, Zelda's, and many JRPG I want to try).

This is all great! Since I’m still on the fence it seems I should pass. Though I keep reading into it. Hmmm

It's worth it in my opinion. I've had one for years now and I have quite a few games on it.

Super Mario Maker, Breath of the Wild (went with it on the Wii U, since it seemed as if it was a bit more stable on there than on the Switch), Mario Kart 8, Super Mario 3d World, Xenoblade Chronicles X, NES Remix Pack (this game is pretty fun and funny at times), Nintendoland (this one honestly surprised me!), New Super Mario Bros U and New Super Luigi U, Smash Bros Wii U, LOZ: The Wind Waker, Bayonetta 1 and 2 and Batman Arkham Asylum: Armored Edtion.

I also have some games on it via the eshop. The library for it is pretty good.

I bought one at launch and barely used it till about a year ago. No joke, I must have had only like maybe 20 hours playtime in all those years. It was super dusty just sitting in my entertainment center as I only had about 5 games for the first five years. I played PS4 the most and Xbox One to a much lesser extent than PS4. At times, I would see the Wii U and really wondered why I bought it at launch and if I wasted my money.

About a year ago, my son who is 5 wanted to play it. With the Wii U on the way out and games being discounted more frequently to clear store shelves, I started buying all the games he would want to play (all the Mario games, Yoshi Wooly World, etc.) He loves the system and I even started using the system to play Wii games like Super Mario Galaxy. We actually play together one night a week on the Wii U on top of him playing the games himself.

So in the end, the Wii U is getting some love finally. I feel much better about spending the money on it 6 years ago. But to me, it still doesn't live up to my Gamecube which is hooked up to the same tv and has always gotten some playtime through the years.

Well after weeks of going back and forth, some of you sold me on it.

I mean $150 for a system Zelda, Mario and Donkey Kong?!

Also this deal is pretty fantastic tbh:

Yeah, I missed out on that $100 Wii U during Black Friday. I'd be totally up for that particular bundle if I didn't pick up Mario 3D World and DK: Tropical Freeze already.

This bundle has my attention has Smash, Splatoon, and Mario Kart 8:

So what is the difference between refurbished and pre-owned from Gamestop, when it comes to systems?

I bought a Wii U for $120 in August, then I bought a Switch on Black Friday. I still use the Wii U, but only to play Smash with amiibo. And the amiibo functionality changed between Wii U and Switch versions; you get much less in rewards, the rewards don't carry over, and you're incapable of using them on Wii U once you've saved Switch Smash data to them.

The thing is that the Switch is just so much better. It's fully portable, whereas the Wii U tablet needs the console running to do anything. Major difference that completely changes where and when you can play games. The same Wii U games are being ported over to the Switch with better graphics, new modes, and all DLC included as well. You end up buying games like BotW and DK Tropical Freeze over again to enjoy all of those extra features.

My recommendation on buying a Wii U with the Switch already out (and a new hardware revision coming next spring) is highly dependent on how much money you're spending. $150 isn't bad, but you'll be buying those games over again anyway. It also depends on if you hack/mod your systems, since the Wii U can still be hacked but the Switch is almost impossible to hack and bricks easily.

What Blade said. I think the only reason to buy a Wii U now is if you're gonna mod it. Many of the games worth owning on Switch are Wii U ports, and since the Switch is basically a Wii U 2.0 you'll just end up rebuying everything. Switches have been coming down in price anyway, I got one for $179 in November.

I have Bayonetta 1 for ps3, same with Arkham.

Is nintendoland worth it without multiplayer?! I decided against smash and splatoon cause I’m not much of a multiplayer kinda guy.

Wow, that's a great price! I was thinking of getting one but decided to hold off. Since I actually had a Wii U, the NS' library is pretty thin in terms of games I haven't played (would really just be Sunshine, Splatoon 2, and Smash Ultimate) and there's a ton of talk about an improved version (better screen, better battery life, etc.) coming out.

I would get Nintendoland if you can find it for $0.99 at GS. Some games are multiplayer only but some of the other games in single player mode. The Donkey Kong mine cart game is a lot of fun.

Word. Yup can for sure find it at that price. Thx for the thoughts

I'm actually contemplating getting a second wiiU. My wiiU is hacked to play GC games, but kind of want to get a second one as back up and keep it stock.

I have a backup one just in case my kids break the one we're using. B2G1 pre-owned everything at gamestop could be your best bet if it comes back to their online store. Last year I bought 2 Wii u bundles and 1 new 3ds xl bundle, sold the games and one Wii u to keep a backup Wii u and new 3ds xl for cheap.

I picked one up for $100 recently.

I only buy Nintendo first party games though.

It’s tough to play 3rd party games with the graphics not up to current standards.

Best thing is that the games ported to switch are super cheap on Wii U.

How is the condition of their WiiUs? I was thinking on waiting for Nintendo to drop their price on their refurbished wiiU, I read they are practically brand new.

No issues with functionality, but it wasn't too clean. I cleaned off the gamepad and I'm good with it now.

I bought one the MK8 bundle off Amazon warehouse deals in Sep 2017 that was better quality, but was missing a couple accessories (though, it came with MK8 installed). I trust Amazon warehouse deals more than GameStop refurb, especially since Amazon is very lenient with returns.

Apparently these go for hundreds now on eBay unopened. IDK why anyone would care about getting this now and needing it to be new when used is $100 with games usually. Dreamcast was a far superior system and commands less of a price unopened.

Have you ever heard of videogame collecting? People collect unopened systems.

Guessing we both saw the same article but as soon as I saw it, I knew it was just a dumbass writer... yes, there are consoles being listed for $800, but doesn't mean they sell for that much. Most eBay listing sell around $600 new, which is still a lot but not surprising. Some PS3 models sell for as much as that brand new, even though there were many more PS3s around.

But as already mentioned, it's collectors buying them for that much. Nobody is buying it new to open/play later (which would be dump, unused systems these days are gonna have caked up thermal paste and the controller batteries will likely be dead). I really don't system collecting... games are one thing, games have a much longer shelf life (outside of older cart games with batteries).

I know, life isnt much fun. believe me I feel you there. If I had the money and wanted a sport tourer Id be on that one or if I wanted a mid sized sportbike Id be on Kyles bike he has for sale. Actually, the best fitting sporty type bike for me I looked at recently meaning today is the leftover 919 Honda Seltzers has but alas, I have no available funds for another bike right now. I dont fit right on the SV650S but fit ok on the N or Gladius hich looks gay.

Hey call over to Catalanos in Clearfield. They had a ZZR1200 for awhile they were advertizsing early this year. It might still be there. I looked at the ZX11 at Unlimited, its nice but not 5200 nice.

I got a good look at the Kawasaki ER6N today..... kinda fugly in person. Im rambling......

Ive always wanted to make one of those.

If we get enough interests from our fans and if Martin and Federico are into the idea- then Im willing to put the effort into developing it

I think it would be lots of fun and interesting to see an adventure game.
