Ship, did you stay for the after credits scene of Spidey-Verse? While it does not answer your daughter's question I believe it confirms the spider's origin.

Ugh... not to drag this conversation out any further, but Ship is completely wrong on the Spider-man vs Iron man conversation. The Robert Downey portrayal and The Avengers series of films changed everything. Anyone I know that gives a damn about Marvel- whether its friends, nephews, or people around my office, they all go apeshit specifically for Iron Man. Spider-man may have sustained his popularity through these past few decades, but it doesn't change how insanely popular Iron Man has become in the past several years.

I haven't logged into this account in 10 years... but with the bs flying out of Ship's mouth, I had to back Wombat up on this one.

For older generations, Spider-Man was a bigger deal. For younger kids, Iron Man is the focal point of Marvel. Look who's center in promo art.

One of my biggest disappointments for video games in 2018 was no Tesla in Forza Horizon 4. It's my fantasy car and one of the reasons I loved FH 2 & 3 so much. I could launch fast with that electric engine instant torque and drive super fast silently.

The dismissal is of RDR 2’s storytelling on the podcast has to be one of the most bizarre things ever on the show. Compared to all the awful schlock that gets praised on here it might as well be East of Eden.

You sure y’all didn’t get trolled and pop in Call of Juarez or something?

My favorite game of the year is Assassin's Creed. The story, music, history and the 4k graphics are all incredible. I even bought the XP / money boost. I have a busy job and with the boost I could just ignore all the tedious side missions. I was able to finish the main story and the coolest side missions in about 40 hours. (Around level 44)

I tried to get into Red Dead 2 but the pace of the game is just too damn slow. Rockstar needs to respect the gamer's time. Lack of fast travel and the idiotic bounty system are my biggest gripes. Don't care about the "realism" they tried to go for. I only care about this level of realism in racing games.

LOVED how passionate Shipwreck is about Spiderman's superiority over Ironman.

Great show as always, been listening for over 12 years.

Had to dig my old CAG username out of the grave and brave the terrible password recovery to throw my two cents into the Iron Man conversation:

Ship, you've never sounded more like an old man than you do trying to argue that Iron Man isn't a top tier character. Superman is this generation's Three Stooges: they know who he is, but that's "dad's superhero". Kids coming up recognize Superman as a logo, but not as a character. They haven't been alive to see any *good* Superman content, but they know that the "S" logo looks good on t-shirts and basketball players' biceps.

Look in the toy aisle or that weird pop-culture end-cap in the electronics section of your beloved Target: They've got a lot of Iron Man there. It's what kids want. Spider-Man is there, too, and he's still one of the most important characters in comics, but for the new generation, Iron Man is right up there with Batman and Spidey, easily taking Superman's place.

I'm growing weary of Shipwreck's constantly being such a dick to Wombat. I get that it's supposed to be goodnatured, but it comes across that way less and less. Wombat's sniping back, a few minutes later, that this is all just the dumb semantics game Shipwreck likes to play had me nodding in agreement.

Maybe put less of a premium on "winning" when you present differing opinions.

Spidey's status was propped up by the Raimi movies the same way Ironman's status was raised by the Marvel movies. The lackluster Garfield movies hurt Spidey's status. The quality of the content matters, that's why Superman and Batman became more popular for people who don't follow comicbooks when the Christopher Reeves movies, the Burton movies and the Batman animated series came out.

Spidey was never on the level of Supes or Batman, Ship was talking about the logos being tattooed but Spideys "logo" isn't even as iconic as those of Superman or Batman. I can argue that Captain America's shield logo is more iconic than the Spidey "logo".

It's 2018, Shipwreck. Iron Man is now more popular than Superman, Batman, and Spider-Man. Robert Downey Jr. still appears in more movies than the friendly neighborhood webslinger who has been like what... two excellent movies in the past ten years? While we are Americans, you fail to see the international appeal of a technologically advanced superhero who is an economic superpower in his own movies.

huh? Iron man is the ultimate capitalist/ American hero. If you are rich enough, you get to play by your own rules. It's like Ayn Rand herself wrote the character. I sure people around world love the idea that a rich American is their only hope.

Thankfully the appeal of that mentality is waning.

I imagine if you asked 2016 Cheapy how likely it would be that he'd have a VR game in his top games list two years later and he'd say it was impossible, but here we are.

Yeah, these weird arguments between Wombat and Ship are just awkward.  We get it, he didn't get ALL the costumes, let it go.  Wombat has a pretty good sense of how to keep the show on track.  I like this show, but it's time for a break.  Happy Holidays everyone!

Cheapy and Wombat were right that you need to skip some Assassins Creed games; I liked Origins and played it a ton but that made Odyssey feel too much like more of the same and I only played it a couple of hours.

Wombat really likes Iron Man.

wow, could shipwreck be more of a dick to wombat? an open world iron man game would sell just a s well as a spider-man game. the popularity of the iron man movies and the avengers movies gives it a built in audience>

Jeezus Ship, you came off as a major dick.  Seriously, listen to the cast yourself.  Stating opinions as "facts" and laughing off opinions contradictive to your own does not make you right.

As Wombat noted, there were a lot of disappointing sequels this year. 2018 had new installments in my favorite series: Far Cry, Tomb Raider, and Forza Horizon. Each was ok, but a disappointment when compared to previous games. Basically the 3 games where I thought it was a slam dunk to buy the DLC.

My favorite game of 2018 was from 2017 - Yakuza 0. One of my favorite stories from any game. Right up with Dragon Age Origins and Mass Effect 1 & 2.

For actual 2018 games, my top is definitely Dragon Quest XI. It just does everything right, and is gorgeous to boot. Spidey would be #2, which surprised me. I've played every Spider-Man game, but finished very few because they usually get boring, but not this one.

I think the difference between Wombat and Ship on Spidey/Iron Man is context. On the whole, Spidey is bigger. I don't think anyone disputes that. He's been synonymous with Marvel since the 60's. But you have to be willfully blind to not see that since 2008, Iron Man has been the face of Marvel and the MCU, and Spidey has been left out of the spotlight. To an adult that grew up with Spidey, he's the top. But for a 10 year old, it's Iron Man because that's who he/she grew up with. It will be interesting if things change with Miles. Hopefully there are more movies and they keep him a kid rather than aging him to an adult, unlike the comics.

It'll never happen but the immersion level of an Iron Man VR game would be insane. You are already putting on a helmet, so it'd be like putting on the Iron Man helment. And you could have the floating HUD and Friday or Jarvis in your ear.

BTW, 'Pog Fister' would be a great name for a Switch game.

I wonder sometimes if Shipwreck just acts like an asshole or if he really is one. Sheesh. One of the worst episodes I've listened to in awhile. Not only was the hostility at an all time high the energy when talking about your favorite games of the year was an all time low.

I’m with Wombat. Ship needs to look at the box office on the Iron Man movies, especially vs Superman. A lot of people bought the Spiderman game because it was made by Insomniac, not because they were desperate for a Spiderman game. One of the Marvel execs even called it “the Iron Man of Marvel video games”.

I thought it was a good episode, and wasn't offended by the banter between Shipwreck and Wombat. I just take it as friendly teasing. My happiest moment is that Cheapy finally told his maid to pull the PSVR from out of the closet because he feels its relevant!

Going to avoid jumping on the bandwagon although Wombat is completely correct.

I do find it ironic that in the same episode where you guys were struggling to find five games you've completed this year Cheapy would complain about a company giving you a choice to help a customer finish.  Sure you can make the argument about game design, but there are a ton of smaller games you guys did not finish either.  I also would struggle coming up with the list, but i would not complain about the option being offered to me.
