Which is odd, because they give you steps on how to redeem the code on the website (which BTW doesn't work for me).

I can't even log into Bethesda's website. I did a password recovery, but it's telling me my new password is wrong. I'll have to try downloading the client.
No you dont. You can redeem the code from their website. Launcher is only required to download the game

You do not... did it on my iPhone earlier. Logged into website, it shows as claimed.
And FYI, their website is HORRIBLE to load.. worse than fallout 76.

I just redeemed via the website successfully.
For folks who got an invalid code notice (I did too) at checkout, here's a quick fix: Click on the hamburger bar on the left top corner, Go to shop menu and click redeem code and enter the code.

Holy shit. They even 
ed up giving away a free game. Looking at the responses on Twitter, almost no one could login for most of the day, and those that managed to got a invalid code error. I’m glad I waited till later. I just redeemed the code with no issues. Jesus though, Bethesda.

I couldn’t get the website login to work at all. Also couldn’t log in via an old version of the launcher.
I uninstalled the launcher and reinstalled it from the website, and was able to log into the launcher and claim the game. Finally.
