No denying that, but I imagine the licensing to get NBA and NFL together on a cabinet would be difficult. I could definitely see them doing a stand-alone Blitz at some point.

I am not a big enough fan of the NBA or NFL to really care that much on what players make it into the game or not as long as it plays how I remember it and they have the teams.

Blitz will never happen. The series ceased to exist because the NFL refused to license a game that had late hits, body slams, etc.

Surely the game will lack MJ, but that isn't one of the three since he wasn't there to begin with. Two deceased players make sense to be missing; however next of kin sometimes license out names. Shaq let his name and Magic jersey be used in iOS NBA Jam so I hope he's in. Barkley was removed because he signed the deal for Barkley Shut Up and Jam! So I hope he's in too!

Then +1 for all the games mentioned below!

Shaq is also in all of the 2K games ever made. As is Jordan.

My bet is that the three players are the same big names that aren't in the 2K games...Barkley, Reggie Miller and probably Rasheed Wallace.

Thanks for the recommendation, that actually looks pretty amazing. Couple of questions for you:

1) Can you set this to boot straight into attract mode?
2) Can you do something to lock people (i.e., guests and especially my kids) from being able to go into the settings and accidentally screw stuff up?
3) Does high score saving work properly?
4) Would I be able to fit this on a 32gb card or would I be cutting it too close for room for saves?

High scores hold I saw donkey kong last night.  As far as the boot I believe the settings can be tweak as he did some in the video

I believe the 32 should be fine I know his 128 needed some things deleted.  I will check tonight if the on my sd if is the 64 arcade only version. which I believe it is.   That one is IMO for ease of use one to get. Down load it  save it and if the kids corrupt something reflash.  With most pi images save the copy you want because if you do not have a soft power down then at some point a card can get corrupted. reflash takes a few minutes and your back to normal   Dragon lair works,  I do know it boots up to the menu but if you don't select something after a certain time an attract mode plays.  It shows different games but the visuals aren't as sharp as the attract mode when you select.  By no means a deal breaker.

I have a wolfanoz image on a 64 gb card. It is an arcade only,
https://www.youtube....P0F2iGaDA&t=87s

here is a video of the interface. I have downloaded a bunch of images and find the one with this interface as one of the most polished images out there. So much so I feel as though I need to donate something to the creator LOL
the interface the attrack mode all screams polished.
Teminator 2 judgement day is playable.

This image truly seems plug set the controller and play.
I find myself going back to this one.

Agree 100% ... great image thst is plug n play with sn30pro

That'd make sense. I don't follow the NFL so not privy on how they licenses it out, but I do remember them pulling away from Midway and then the unlicensed Blitz The League came out. A Blitz Arcade 1Up would be cool for sure, but not something I'd ever be very interested in owning myself. NBA Jam on the other hand I would be into picking up if I were to come across it for around $200 or less.

Instead of a Pi why not upgrade to the 60-1 board?

This ... the 60 in 1 is a great board that is a hit with the casual crowd, as well (interface is surprisingly newb friendly.) There are few issues with the board that you will see discussed (wonky sound on some games, etc.) but all of the heavy hitters are there and great to play. It is a nearly plug and play solution. DIY retro arcade has 60 in 1 and Pandora's Box AIU kits that I used on my builds. I'm up and running and playing games instead of tinkering with images and settings for Pi.

The logic behind my reasoning on which to buy and which to avoid:

1.) Number of Games included: This is why I previously wanted the 12-in-1 until I saw the Legends Ultimate. Seeing how the Legends cab is non-existent at the moment unless I want to spend Oprah money on ebay I'm going to wait a bit.

2.) The genre: I wouldn't flood my selection with the same type of game. This is what makes me want Star Wars and Golden Tee, since they are niche games.

3.) Games that make it fun to chase a high-score: Beatable games are fun and all but after you've conquered them a few times the replay value dwindles. Fighters have appeal here as do the classic arcade games (Joust being my personal favorite of all-time). I really wish they could do a Popeye but that isn't happening.

Of course, high score games lost their appeal when you reach your score plateaus, and stop improving. That's why Brain Age lost it's appeal - I reached the point where I was no longer improving. Fighters do have a lot of replay, since you have to change your strategy depending on who you're playing with, or against. It's also present in other games that have multiple fighters with different strengths and weaknesses, like the Virtua On games, or the multiplayer console game Overwatch.

It's not nearly as expensive as one would think.  Just depends what you are looking for and when.  I got back into the hobby pretty recently.

I did turn my KI2 cabinet into a MAME cabinet though.  I'm now in the process of gettin 2-3 more cabinets though.

Also original arcade cabinets are tanks.  They aren't made from low quality materials.  You're getting them mixed up with A1up lol.

Saying that cabinets smell like smoke is saying that everyone who inhales second hand smoke is going to have lung cancer.  It's very far and few between that are even like that.  And the majority of them now a days haven't been in real arcades in ages and have been taken care in home usage.

The shipping is largely what makes it expensive. I've seen games at the classic gaming expo for reasonable prices, like Hang-On standup for $200, or a Daytona Usa 2 sit down cabinet pair for $500. High demand games like Pac-Man and Donkey Kong might be pricey, but lesser  known games, such as the myriad of vertical shooters released in the mid to late 80s, or the slew of Double Dragon wannabes that flooded the arcades soon after that hit. Some, like Final Fight and Golden Axe, hit it big, but there are a ton of others that there isn't a lot of demand for.

I have to agree... I bought a cab with Soul Blade and converted it for MVS use. The price of the cab + MVS 1 slot + 2 or 3 MVS games was less than the MSRP of the TMNT cab.Spent like $320 (granted, this was about 12 years back) and that cab has survived the original owner, a 5 hour drive on its side to get it home. Up 2 sets of stairs, down again, a move to another location and them a cross country move. And I was not gentle at all. Also have another, gutted cab, that I was in process of refurbishing when I moved cross country, but pretty sure the now ex-wife purposely left the control panel back in Florida (and well as the 4-player NBA Jam CP i had lying around)

Both full sized cabs came from smoking homes and who knows where they started life, but never smelled of smoke. I mean, I work as IT in a casino and as machines get taken off the slot floor and put into storage, that cigarette smell doesn't follow and these are very similar builds to arcade cabinets. Also, they hold up GREAT for long term storage. There was also a comment about games needing their own power supply. That was mostly pre-jamma and large, custom hardware that needed. My 2 MVS boards, CPS2 and Macross boards all use the same jamma harness for power.

I think ETA Prime (youtube) nailed it when he mentioned that while yes, you could place high in components in an Arcade1up, it's pretty much a toy. Compared to a full size cab, it really is. I do have 2 arcade1up cabs, both modded with PC parts that would have gone to waste otherwise (an old-ish xeon and an I5 that were both just sitting in the garage doing nothing at all) and if I didn't have those PCs already, they both would have raspberry pis.

I don't consider myself an arcade collector in the slightest, but still can justify original arcade hardware for certain things and the arcade1up for everything else. MVS and CPS2 games I'd like to own originals for. Also, apologies if this sounds all over the place.... At work and taking calls being sentences :)

The biggest issue with classic cabinets is the monitors. The biggest advantage is the side art.

A new, custom cabinet can be built with whatever materials you please, allowing you to make them as well-designed and long-lasting as you can afford and/or prefer. I have a custom cabinet that I designed and built almost 20 years ago, and it's still in great shape, because I designed it to be an absolute tank. (internal framework of reinforced, cross-braced 2-by-4s attached with bolts, basically as sturdy as practically possible) While some classic cabs are durable, a lot of them were built using particle board, not the best of materials if it gets even slightly damp. They'll hold up decent if kept inside and dry, but there are still issues and concerns.

And of course, there are the monitors. One of the biggest concerns for classic cabinets is the monitors, and the problems they introduce. Multi-sync CRT monitors are not common, tend to be a bit expensive these days if you are buying a new one, and are only going to get more rare as time goes by. Modern flat-panels are almost never built to sync down to arcade PCB refresh rates, so they can't be used natively with original boards. And those multi-sync CRTs are big and heavy. This also tends to make the cabinets themselves top-heavy, which increases the risk of tipping the cabinet over. On top of everything else, CRTs are restricted in size by the sheer practical limitations of their glass tubes. You can't build a huge-screen cabinet with a CRT, the biggest you can hope for is around 35-40 inches. And given the unwieldy weight of such a screen, I would not recommend that approach.

One of the biggest advantages to going with a classic cab is that sweet, sweet side-art. If you can find a cabinet in decent condition with intact side-art, it makes it considerably more worth the trouble. Replicating that side art with modern tools is not easy or cheap. Classic cabinets with intact side-art can be worth it even if you are just looking to recycle the side-panels.

A modern, custom-designed cabinet is the ideal solution, but requires expertise and tools that not all users are going to have. Which is why a company like 1Up is able to sell their cabinet-kits. While the more knowledgeable arcade enthusiast could do better with a DIY solution, the more casual fan would be willing to shell out for an easier approach.

Is this what you are referring to with the 60-1 board? https://www.diyretro...l-machines.html

Seems like a solid way to go. Is there a list of the games included anywhere?

Yes, or the Pandoras Box 6 for a horizontal build. With a custom control deck and all new controls, runs about $200 for the mod. A little more for a PB6 (but you can have about 2500 games)

Got a link to the Pandoras Box?

Also thanks for the 60-1 link. I'd definitely want some of those games on my cabinet, but it is missing a lot of the stuff I want and I think the Pandora's Box may be more up my ally. I could go the Raspberry Pi route, but I like the idea of this being a simpler mod with one of these.

I hiighly recommend upgrading to the PB6. That gives you the ability to double the games. Zerojay.com community collection for that. Also, they are super helpful and quick to respond at diy retro arcade with build questions.

I'd just recommend waiting for the new wave to come out, they are going to retail for $99 out of the gate. I personally like the smaller design of them shown at CES too. Thinking about picking one up myself to mod for vertical games.

A local seller has the Xmen cab for $220. I checked WM and it is no longer available. Is this a good price? Still trying to find out how and if I can mod my cocktail cabinet.

Depends, especially if it's used. Target has had them listed at $250 for awhile now, but might be hard to find in store.

Pandora 6 or Wolfanoz Arcade image on a Pi?

Just looking to run arcade roms. Is the setup process on a Raspberry Pi gonna drive me crazy, or does the wolfanoz image do most of the hard work for you? I was skilled enough to figure out the process of hacking my S/NES Classic after only a moderate amount of frustration.

I used that Wolfanoz image and have not been able to get my trackball or spinner to work properly still. Not sure what I’m doing wrong and I’m definitely not very good with these things. I got frustrated and gave up like a week or so ago, but I’d really like to get Tempest and Golden Tee working properly

Setting up a trackball on a pi is not an easy thing. And good luck getting golden tee working properly.

I got the trackball working on my pi 3b editing files. I don’t recall exactly which.

I just got a $65 Space Invaders counter at a local office supply store during their "half off all Christmas gifts" sale... although I'm starting to rethink it.

Do we know when/where/etc. for those?  I only snagged the Space Invaders as it seemed worthwhile at the time, but I can easily return in -- I don't really care about Space Invaders as much as a relatively "cheap" countertop cab.  It looks like most "plug and play" mods will more than double my cost, though...

Hmmm... don't really care about Golden Tee, but I might like the trackball for the other usual stuff. Easier to set up on Pandora's Box?

The process is pretty smooth you could follow eta prime tutorial or download and test it with a 360 controller pi setup.

I haven't tried a trackball but I play missile command.  All this stuff takes some tweaking to get it to your liking

IMO the 60 and 1 looks nice but you get way more bank for the buck with the right pi image .

His 128 image has consoles and a different interface look.  I find the wolfanoz arcade only  64 .32 bit the sweet spot.

1) Can you set this to boot straight into attract mode?

3) Does high score saving work properly?

I checked the wolfanoz image 64 and 128 if you go into the menu you can change the ui to kids this will lock out the settings and  prevent anyone from accidentally changing them. Once enabled you have to use the old contra code to unlock the settings
