MyBestBuy Members Save 10% on Newest Games - Did Anyone Else Notice This?

CAGiversary!
I dont know when it happened but it seems as though the newest games are getting a 10% discount at Best Buy for being a MyBestBuy member.

I noticed it on Pre Orders, and the likes of Borderlands and more. It's not the discount of Walmart but it's not half bad either.[attachment=32814:20190927_210917.jpg]

Well, it's not quite GCU good. But, that does give me a reason to buy games from BB when my GCU expires. I hope they continue the $10 coupons as well.

I have the same thing but it’s because my birthday is in October so it shows it for my Birthday! Who knows though.

Targeted members get 10% off their next purchase. Probably their yearly customer appreciation.
Best Buy showed me how much they appreciate my business by not fulfilling the Links Awakening dreamer edition pickup order. I hope to eventually play this game:)

Right now I'm only getting the 10% off because its my birthday month.   I guess we will see after September 30th if I get this other offer.

If you've got a birthday offer, use it on a digital game (where GCU wouldn't matter anyway).  That's what I did for KH3: got my 10% for the birthday, plus the $10 reward cert.

How can you get mad at Best Buy of discontinuing a program that they lost money on
I always viewed GCU as a way to get people into the store to buy other things while they were there. When my GCU ends, I plan on rarely shopping at Best Buy ever again. I can buy what I need off Amazon and if it is a major appliance, just go to Home Depot.

With BB phasing out GCU, they are phasing out shoppers like me. I have spent a lot of money at Best Buy and used my Best Buy credit card inside and outside of Best Buy.

If you mean they lost money by not having me shop there as much you're correct. When I had gcu I would go in the store more to browse some. I'd get a game or see a display for a blu ray on sale, bought my last router and shaver with them when I was in there and such. My wife would usually get a drink or we would look around. Last time we casually went in to check for games we also bought a shark vacuum.

Since it's been canceled almost a year now I've walked in there maybe 3 times and 2 of those were to do a in store pickup where I got my item and left immediately after.

When I would use to pre order games somewhat often as gcu would soften that MSRP blow now I very rarely do it. Now if bestbuy has a 60 dollar game come out 95% of the time I now wait till it's like 30 or less when before I was willing to pay 48. To me if I wait till it's around 48 I normally don't have to wait much longer to get it even cheaper. In most cases that game I would pay 48 for with gcu is now 25 or less when I do buy it.

I used to be elite plus every year with them. This year I am barely elite and that is only because I needed a new microwave for over the stove and I price matched at bestbuy because if I had an issue I'd easier to return to a store near me.

So yeah they lost money on me, but not the way you're thinking.

You're one data point, they evaluated that GCU was not profitable nor did it have a large enough impact on bringing in additional revenue.

Profitability aside, GCU couldn't have been popular with publishers.  While we all know games go on sale pretty soon after they release, publishers are still trying to push the idea that their product is worth $60, and you should pay that $60 right away.  If you've got Amazon and BB essentially saying "no game will be $60 for you, they're all at least 48!" then customers are going to have a lower image of the "value" of your product.

Heck, just look what happened when the Epic Games Store took $5 off of all of their games earlier this year (and EGS ate the cost of that discount).  Even games they had exclusive rights for, like Borderlands 3, didn't want to be part of that sale, because they didn't want their perceived value to change.

And remember what happened shortly before GCU got axed... RDR2 was completely removed, despite (IIRC) being available to preorder for a long time before.  If Rockstar felt like they were a big enough deal to stand up and say "stop devaluing our games or we won't let you sell them" then how long would it have been before EA and Activision pulled the same thing?

BB saw the writing on the wall that publishers weren't happy with it, and GCU is meaningless without games to sell, so that was also a huge factor in why it went away.

I've purchased a lot of games I wouldn't have otherwise because of GCU. Once mine expires in Feb. I don't plan on buying games that much anymore and when I do I have no reason to go to Best Buy for them. It was a nice way to encourage me to not only purchase my games at their store, but to have me pick up some other things I need now and then since I'm there anyways. Once that's over I'll just stick with Amazon for everything.

$60 game, GCU Discount $48

$60 game, current WALMART discount on new release games $49.94

$1.94 difference and Amazon matching their prices, nobody's threatening to pull anything from either.

Oh, $1.94 difference AND a $10 giftcard through Amazon on certain games. Matching BB's offers as well. (Amazon matched Walmarts pre-order price on GR Breakpoint at $49.94 and BB's $10 giftcard offer)

It was BB canceling GCU due to the "losses" and not publishers pressuring BB. Gamestop and Walmart still sold more games than BB, remember that most people did not have GCU.. It first cost like $99 or something.. it wasn't until it was $30 for 2 years that people really started buying into it.

Someone that worked at BB posted a long time ago that BB was paying like $47 per game.. and selling them at $48 with GCU. Publishers were getting their cut no matter what.

GCU was a marketing ploy to get people to buy games, and end up spending more on other things through them. It worked. Since I lost GCU, i've bought basically nothing from them. I had points for a $5 cert for ever.. finally decided to use it a few weeks ago. I only look at BB's deals of the day anymore, no games? I move on without even looking at the rest of their site. ( 99% of the time I can beat or at least match their prices elsewhere)

Oh and that 10% discount? click the "offer" details, it's a birthday discount on select items.

I've spent only $31.47 at BestBuy this year. Over the 4 years I had GCU, I spent an average of $1700 per year.

Empowered by GCU, I bought:

1. New games on release day as opposed to only buying used previously (1-2 gens behind current).

2.  New games I would otherwise never have given a chance.

3.Bundles and collector's editions where I would only ever have bought just the basic game.

4. Consoles, handhelds, and accessories since I had already racked up rewards at BB through buying all the discounted games.

5. amiibo. I wouldn't  have collected half the figures I've got if all had been MSRP.

Who could truly determine whether BestBuy misses my money? But I myself am surprised to realize I don't  miss spending it at BB as I had previously expected I would.

The only gaming purchase I've made at all this year was Borderlands 3, which I bought for my brother. And if I hadn't found some old BB gift cards lying around, I would not have bought it at BB.

I'm simply enjoying playing my backlog atm. I'll just go back to my previous Craigslist/eBay shopping habits if I need something. I mostly just pop in to CAG here and there to check if there's an XBLive deal running. It's not a bad life.

When I had GCU I would spend $3k+ and be Elite Plus too, now without it, I have no reason to go there. Anything they have I can price match elsewhere that's more convenient.

Still go to BB for the rare occasion they have non-gaming items cheaper than anywhere else but it's not worth it.

I'm sure they are making something without it but they also have a much smaller gaming section and thus aren't too invested in selling games in store anyways.

I'm also seeing that 10% birthday discount on my account even though it's not my birthday month. Doesn't stack with GCU and I'm not picking up anything anyways but just a weird thing.

I just found out that BBUY no longer allows you to use Reward Certs towards Gift cards.   I used to use them to buy digital XBL GC since I am 90% digital now.  Sucks.  My GCU expired in the spring so I literally have no reason to buy anything game related at BBUY any more.

Pretty much same here. Mine expired 9/16 and while I pre-ordered a bunch of stuff from here through early next year.... I'll have no reason to go through them for anything. I I spent about $6kish over the last 2 years with them. I already have addictive type issues and should DEFINITELY buy less games in general, so this will help! But I will miss taking a chance of games I otherwise wouldn;t have.

Just this year, Outward, Greedfall, Man of Medan, Sinking City, Cthulu, etc; So many more than that, but all those games I absolutely had a blast playing despite being games I'd normally never look at.

It will be weird when I lose GCU next year. I'm not sure where I'll end up buying from but probably just go back to GS until they go out of business. Then again, some games still get bonus points for pre-order but that kinda pales when games drop in price so fast. Yeah, probably just GS when a game drops in price after 2 months heh.

Umm, this is actually working for me and stacks with GCU so OP isn't wrong. I'm able to order Ghost Recon for $39.99 with $10 bonus rewards. SOLD.

I think that's something different. They did the same $10 price cut with Mario and Sonic at the Olympics. I think it's their form of aggressive price matching now that GCU is dead for many people and Walmart and others are regularly taking $10 off certain new release games.

I'm in the same place as a lot of you. I lost GCU in March so I've spent a little over $600 at Best Buy this year. I've been Elite+ the last 2. I may not even hit Elite. I bought less games and now just waiting for Black Friday as GCU doesn't work anyway.

I would think GCU would be ridiculously popular with publishers and developers. They're selling more copies of their games at full retail, with the vendor (Best Buy) taking the hit that props up their sales.

People didn't look at newly released games as costing $48. The publishers and developers got to sell their games at every store with an MSRP of $60... on top of getting extra sales out of Best Buy because you had people that wouldn't have bought it at MSRP anywhere else.

The different between GCU and Epic's ill conceived sale was that Epic advertised the prices as $5 less than the price the publisher/developer set, diminishing the value of even brand new games.

GCU prices were never advertised. The only way you knew about GCU price was if you were logged in to your account or you were reading gaming forums.

its been that way for a while..you can use it for ebay gift cards though it'll work and i think subscription cards like xbl gold etc but not the xbl gift card eg the 25 - 50 etc
