PSA: Target Now Charging $1 Bag Fee for In-Store Pick-Up Orders CA only

I just noticed last evening I was being charged a $1.00 "bag fee" when I attempted to order items on the Target app for in-store pick-up.

Anyone else get this?

Store pick up is supposed to be a convenience, why the fuck are they charging a bag fee? Do they not want people in their stores?

Edit: Check to see if your state has a ban on plastic bags, if so that's why you're being charged. Maybe there's an option on the website to not have it bagged or something. Something like 3 dots on the top right, select ‘Adjust Bag Quantity’ to 0.

I'm in CA if that helps. Definitely did not get this fee last month around. There also doesn't seem to be an option for not wanting a bag when doing store pick up with the app.

I saw that too a couple weeks ago. Also in CA. In the fine print it says that they charge for the $1 now, and if you don’t use the bag, they’ll refund it to you. Either way, it’s stupid since the bags cost 10 cents normally.

I guess I dont understand this. I mean if you walk in the store they dont charge you a dollar to pick something off the shelf and buy it. Why charge a dollar for ordering it online, then coming to the store and picking it up?

I saw about the plastic bag ban and all but still, why make it automatic? Sure you can refuse the bag and get the refund but that's just another pointless step and something else I have to think about. Shouldn't they charge the dollar when you pick it up if you want a bag then?

Hope they dont ban the bags in my state. They are quite handy to me. I keep them under the sink in the kitchen and take food to work in them, and perfect to scoop cat litter into, tie off and throw away.

Oh well, I dont like the target near me anyway and I hardly ever go in it.

I f'n love plastic bags and dread the day my local grocery stores quit using them, what am I gonna use for cheap trash bags? God dang environment always tryin' to ruin a good thing.

I live in New Mexico and starting January 1st the ban on plastics goes into effect IIRC. I wouldn’t be surprised if they start charging for plastic bags here too by then.

Living here in LaLaLand, the irony of the "new" plastic bags is that they're actually worse for the environment vs the old ones. #VirtueSignalingFTW.

it's true that they are charging the $1 bag fee. however, when you pick it up, you can say you don't need the bag and they will refund the $1.

If I'm paying $1 for a bag, it better be one of those nice canvas bags that you can wash in a washing machine. Not one of those crappy ones that they try to pass off as reusable.

You think that's bad. In Portland, you have to "ask" for a straw for drinks and stuff. If you don't ask for it, you don't get one.

One of my nearby beach cities in florida has started requiring paper straws

they're so bad, what a joke

Imagine bitching about your little plastic bags and straws! I'm not Mr Mother Nature but just driving around and seeing all the plastic bags and cups in ditches does make me shake my head.

I think they are bitching more about the unnecessary $1 charge for the bags. It's weird that they would do that. It's like a backhanded way to get people to shop in the stores instead of online.

Well I dont see what the big deal is if you can refuse the bag and get the refund. An option for no bag while doing an Instore Pickup would be nice yes but its not a big deal. And if its $1 for a canvas bag that seems like the going price around here. We sell them for $1.25 at the library I work at.........its amazing how someone who desperately needed a bag before mentioning the price finds the strength to carry their shit after mentioning the price! We just let you borrow $100 worth of books/dvds by showing your library card yet you cant fork out $1.25 for that bag that you need.....

Well, this site is called CheapAssGamer, not RichAssGamer, after all.

I keep a canvas bag in my car already because of Goodwill getting rid of plastic bags so I really dont see the problem. I bought a 3 pack of metal straws for my Yeti 3 years ago and they work just fine. If I remember to tell people no straw I do.

I'm not sure why everyone is so confused.

It's in the disclaimer in the cart during checkout,

"**Bag fees

We place a temporary authorization for the cost of 10 bags at this store. You’ll only be charged for the actual number of bags used for your order, which can be refunded if you decline bags at pickup."

Each bag is $0.10, so they charge you for up to 10 bags, but if you refuse it, you don't get charged.

Really not that big of a deal as some people are making it out to be.

It would have helped had the OP said whether they saw the disclosure or not when ordering online. Had that been done, I don't think some of us (myself included) would've reacted the way we did. I can understand $1 each for reusable bags as that's the minimum going rate for them.

All it takes is a misunderstanding to fuel bad reactions by some or all...

Indeed.

Aw well. XD

People complaining here about how a company is charging them extra when it makes something more convenient for shoppers. Clearly, no one here has bought a movie or concert ticket online. Convenience fees are about as common as taxes.

Get over it. And if it honestly stops some people here from using plastic bags, all the better.

That's. The. fuckin. Point.

We're surrounded by idiots. Humans - unfortunately, we can't get rid of ourselves fast enough. Based on the sheer stupidity and neglect we show for others, our co-habitants, and this planet, there clearly needs to be fewer of us for this world to survive.

Youre not wrong about the idiots....just yesterday I was behind someone driving like 15MPH in a big SUV down a side road and they start throwing paper out their window....I honked and the edgelord flipped me off and pulled into a gas station......which has trash cans by the pumps! I was just hoping a cop wouldve been driving down that road at the same time!

Ugh. So sad. Well, at least we humans are all headed towards our extinction. Heck, we're making it come faster on account of our stupidity and neglect. Frankly, good riddance to us. We as a species deserve it.

Well, this thread took a dark turn...
At this point, the way I see it, people who ignore what we're doing or prefer not to talk about it are as much the problem as the actual problem. Sadly, probably doesn't matter anyways since we're unlikely to address the serious issues and the point of no return is right around the corner. Oh well, at least it'll be today's babies and kids who will inherit this fucked up world with an acidic atmosphere, limited fresh water, and a near collapsing ecosystem. At least we won't have to deal with it.

If you have kids though ... well, sucks for them. You brought them into a world that's going down the shit.
