I'd love to support Shenmue 3, but I just don't have time to play it and I know it will hit $20 soon enough. Definitely will pick it up eventually, but I would be very surprised if we see a Shenmue 4.

The outlook for a sequel seems pretty dead (unless Kickstarted to hell and back) if it's already half off about less than a month and a half after it's release.

I mean yeah it would take Kickstarter this one did too. So because of the possibility of Kickstarter success happening again due to people wanting to finish the story I think there's a decent chance there will be a 4.

I Think it'll be a harder sell for a Shenmue 4 on Kickstarter because Shenmue 3 was based in allot of nostalgia, but allot of people didn't seem ready for the very nostalgic gameplay.

I'm honestly shocked that this didn't sell well in Japan either. Figured it would well somewhat well there, at least. I also wonder if the Epic Game Store controversy hurt things but can't imagine it was a huge deal.

When Kickstarter is paying for everything from development to printing which Shenmue 3 did sales numbers after launch are not near as important. Then on top of that Epic gave them a big check too. For all we know Yu Suzuki is happy with the sales. Impossible to know. I am sure he didn't go into this with the idea it would be a huge success.

10 years ago no one would have predicted we'd even get a 3, so you really can't count out the possibility of 4. There was really no reason to think 3 would do big sales because the series never has. It may not be the Shenmue 4 that people wanted or expected, but that's another story.

But I'm not saying 100% for sure there will be a 4 either. Poor reviews and people mad about the whole Steam thing will hurt them to some extent with Kickstarter with the hardcore fans. I do believe 100% Suzuki will at least try.

But Deep Silver published it and I believe Sony also helped financed Shenmue 3 as well (after it premiered at E3). There's no way you can make a game like Shenmue 3 from just six million dollars on Kickstarter,

I'd love to know how much it cost to make this game... it literally feels like they took Shenmue II and updated for the settings using Unreal Engine 4. I mean, it looks great but some of the art direction is very questionable in this day and age.

I'd be interested to know as well. I doubt it cost more than the original Shenmue though. If I had to guess I'd say it cost between $10-12 million to make. Shenmue I believe is still the most expensive game Sega has ever made, it was around $50 million at the end of the day I believe.

I Feel bare minimum it's more in the ball park of $20-25 million just because I remember an old interview with the CEO of Ubisoft saying lower cost projects on the 360 and PS3 for them usually cost around $12-$15 million or so. I Can't imagine the development cost getting lower about 5 or so years later.

We don't know how much Epic paid them also, but it was said to be a lot. Next gen costs don't necessarily matter that much if they're going to make another game that is outdated like 3 and they could even put it on PC exclusively your numbers are totally guesses probably way high for a game that wasn't cutting edge at all most likely it was less than most PS4 games. No one thought there'd ever be a 3 and Suzuki was hellbent on making it and it's here, the same could happen for 4. Anyway it's pointless to go back and forth with you you think it won't I think it might enough said neither is changing their mind.

I totally believe that the Kickstarter money only payed for a fraction of the cost. Sony and Deep Silver fronted the cost for the rest. If I recall from the Kickstarter updates, Y's Net said they needed Deep Silver in order to make Shenmue as good as it could be.

Since Deep Silver had publishing rights, they made a deal with the Epic Store and caused a lot of controversy. The Kickstarter backers were not as important at this point. Y's Net and Deep Silver pointing fingers at each other when the backers request updates for their backer concerns.

I backed a digital and physical copy for PS4 in addition to purchasing a retail steelbook copy when after release. If they happen to Kickstart Shenmue 4, I don't think they will get as much support as before. Many PC gamers were miffed at the switch to Epic Store exclusively at the 12th hour of release. I do believe that the 4th game will happen, but Deep Silver will most likely again front the cost if development.

The next installment should be cheaper to make now that Y's Net have updated the game to the Unreal Engine. The foundation has been set.

After seeing angryjoe’s rapid review, sadly I think I’ll never cop this game

Angry Joe is an interesting personality but his reviews are over the top. Sometimes he just rants about things that are not that big of an issue. It is his opinion regardless.

That being said, there are other reviewers that give the game a reasonable and fair review. Digital Foundry goes into the pros and cons in detail.

Personally the game is exactly what it should be. It looks and plays just like a Shenmue sequel. It won't really be if interest of anyone who didn't play the originals.

I still can't get over how this was on sale for $35 three days after it released. Usually Ubisoft holds the record for dumpster dives but damn. . .I think this was a world record.

Yeah it's crazy how fast the price dropped

Meanwhile I kickstarted and wish I got this nice steelbook

I already had gotten the LRG version, so I bought this for 24 with GCU, then traded the game to gamestop for $22 cash and kept the Steelbook

This has been one of my favorite games this year.  I love how much you can get to know people and how so much changes from every single bit of information you gather.  For 30 dollars, I think this is a steal.

I'm still surprised Yu Suzuki decided not to finish the series with this game and instead leave it unfinished when it took this long. To me, it's just such a slap in the face to diehard fans. At this point, I think there is close to zero chance that Shenmue gets another sequel. Shenmue 3 likely wiped out its goodwill from those with some curiousity, leaving now only a niche of a niche to support a fourth outing. This franchise is dead.

Really? Ugh. This game fell off my radar a while ago. I was tempted to get it but if it doesnt finish out the storyline then I'm not really interested in it. If it hits 20 with the steel book I'll probably buy it then.

I dont mind sequels to games so much. But i hate buying a game, spending many hours playing it and the story isnt resolved. I'd rather have a crappy finale to a game than a good to be continued ending.

You'll be severely disappointed then. Frankly, tbh after you finish, nothing really actually happened in terms of story progression. The Shenmue diehards will tell you that's not the point of Shenmue, and that tye "fun" is just spending time doing sidequests and chatting with npcs. Okay, sure, but this isn't built like RDR2 so the interactions are not well done so what you're left with is a game that seems trapped in the old game design space. Just disappointing.

For those on the fence:

If you liked Shenmue 1 &2 , then this game will feel familiar to you. The story is a letdown, and there's a lot of grinding for money and martial arts experience, but overall I enjoyed the experience. I backed 3 on KS and would back 4 on KS, too.

It was known from the start of the Kickstarter campaign that Shenmue 3 would not finish the story. Yu Suzuki said that there would be 11 Chapters and would require 4 or 5 games to tell the whole story.

Following the Kickstarter comments since the start of the campaign, I would say that more backers were upset about the Epic exclusivity and botched campaign rewards during the launch window.

I played the original Shenmue on my Dreamcast , imported Shenmue 2 for Dreamcast to play it early, then replayed Shenmue 2 on Xbox. Recently I replayed Shenmue 1 and 2 on my Xbox and PS4. I'm a diehard as well, however I do not feel that the story should have been completed during the 3rd outing, it was never an expectation.

As I said before, Y's Net has financial backing from Deep Silver. I do believe that there will be additional Shenmue games in the future. No doubt that they will get additional funding from Epic if they continue with another store exclusive launch for PC. In my opinion there probably won't even be another Kickstarter.

Shenmue was always a  niche of a niche game. It isn't dead just yet.

I like your optimisim, and of course, time - and sales - will tell whether YS and us get a sequel.

I'd like to see Ryo's saga get to the finishline. But I'll admit I don't think it will ... at least not if YS insists on taking THAT many games to get there.

My hope is that there is another Kickstarter. When the last one launched, I was in the middle of a cross-country move and buying a house, and so my pledge was relatively low. If they did one again, I would pledge significantly more, but you may be right that it was simply a one-time thing.

My hope, I suppose, is that we get a much longer 4th game that concludes the saga. If you remove the grinding from 3, the game is very short. The Bailu Village stuff is pretty good, but once you get to Niaowu it's like the story wasn't finished and was just tossed together as an afterthought.
