Will My R9-290 Output To 4 Monitors Or Not?

Sean Price II

CAGiversary!
Not a PC Gamer (definitely love to be one tho) but long story short, picked up an R9 290 for $50.

Here is the exact card I have: Asus R9 290

I have 4 of these monitors: Dell P2217H

I will buy 2 of these DVI to HDMI cables: DVI to HDMI

GPU has: 1 DP, 1 HDMI, 2x DVI

Monitor has: 1 DP, 1 HDMI, 1 VGA

My main goal is to run 4 monitors off this card, so I would use the DP and HDMI port and then buy a DVI to HDMI cable for the other 2 monitors as linked above. It should be that simple right?

I went to my local PC store to buy the cable and the kid said he wouldn't order it for me because these cards only support 3 "active" displays and aren't able to output to the 4'th.  He said since they can't do return for special orders thats why he won't order it since he's know I will return it since it won't work.

Sure enough I went on the internet and it seems I can't get a concrete answer, its all over the place.  Half of my results say it will not display 4 monitors without some kind of DP hub and the other half says it will..

BEFORE i order my QUAD monitor stand and the cables I wanted to see if you guys had a more concrete answer for me?

please advise

Looks like it won't work. See the bottom post, one of the DVIs shares the same output as the HDMI.

Says the same thing here, can run 3 natively plus a 4th one with software.

It also doesn't look like your monitor supports DaisyChaining unfortunately, that would be the easiest way to do it.

Another option is, if your motherboard have any video outputs, you should be able to hook up 3x to the 290 and another to the mobo directly.

that is so crazy that you found those, so that inspired me and I did some more resarch and here is what I found..

Look at Post #11, this is one of the threads that "confirms" that the R9 290 can run 4 monitors (1dp, 1hdmi, 1DVI x2) with no adapters or anything else, jus straight out using the 4 outputs on the card..

nuts isn't it, there is no real consenus anywhere..

hmm, NOW this.. THIS is the nail in the coffin i think.

Check out this image from AMD themselves that I just stumbled across which seems to 110% confirm that it can run 4 monitors with no adapters needed..
