Speaking for myself, I never got back into Zelda once it transitioned into the 3D era. Unpopular opinion - Ocarina of Time wasn't as enjoyable as Link to the Past. Or even Awakening on gameboy. Majora's Mask? Couldn't stand the time mechanic. Wind Waker? Never liked the style + the sailing, ugh. Tunic is the banger Zelda successor IMO. Plus it's on game pass. Loved that game

Nothing for me this week sale-wise, I will be buying. Free Play weekend game I'll check out for sure is Just Die Already. It's from the mind who created Goat Simulator, so I'll definitely download that & give it a go

I nabbed Steamworld Dig yesterday at $2...already got $2 worth out of it.

I think I tried 2 when it was on GP a while back, I couldn't get into 2 at the time; maybe more complexity than I wanted being a sequel to something I had never played.

I own all the systems and try to rotate through each one (beating a few games before rotating) and am back to the XBOX now. I have already beaten the Halo games and Gears games (including Gears Tactics). I like the Forza games but get bored with racing after an hour or so. Flight Simulator is a similar experience in that it loses the novelty for me after a short bit. I tried Sea of Thieves but it seems to be more of a multiplayer online experience than a fun single-player game.

 

I beat the original Fable on the OG XBOX back in the day. I am planning to go through the Fable trilogy ahead of Fable 4 at some point. 

I plan to play Quantum Break since I apparently need to do that and play Alan Wake before Control.

I own Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon so I will get to those eventually.

 

I started HiFi Rush last night and it is fun so far especially if you like rock music. It seems to be well-reviewed and exclusive to XBOX/PC. High on Life is also an exclusive I want to try to beat on Gamepass. I am going to wait for Microsoft to finish Redfall before possibly starting that game.

 

In terms of major AAA Xbox exclusives, I think they are going to come in a year or 2. Microsoft just acquired the Bethesda studios and it takes years to make these AAA games. We don't want them to rush things and have more "Redfall situations". They REALLY need Starfield to be a massive hit imo. It needs to be good enough to get people to buy a Series console or at least subscribe to Gamepass to experience it.

Blasphemy for many but I spent probably 20 hours on Breath of the Wild and have gone back numerous times and just haven’t been able to get into it as much as the rest of the world has. I’m not a huge puzzle person and the degrading weapons system drove me nuts so, yeah, there it is. Ban me if you dare.

(I’ve played and enjoyed many other Zelda games though. Think I prefer structure in those games)

Yes, the game was too unstructured for me.  I feel like I have limited time to game and do not appreciate when a game wants me to just explore without direction or find my own fun.  I appreciate the game, but it's just not for me.  I need a pointer telling me where to go or it feels frustrating and aimless.  I have limited experience with Zelda games, so maybe that's more common for the series in general.  Either way, it's not for me.

Link to the Past was my all time Zelda, couldn't get into Ocarina\MM as much. But then Breath of the Wild popped and I was hooked again

Had kept up with the Zelda series through Phantom Hourglass, but once I got a 360 in 2008, my console gaming shifted heavily to Xbox.  I never started Spirit Tracks and barely got past the opening of Skyward Sword.  I did play through Ocarina 3D and Link Between Worlds, but haven't started Breath of the Wild.  Holding off on Tears of the Kingdom until I get caught up, though I may use a voucher for it since that's probably going to be the best deal on it for a while.  Closing in on a one year daily achievement streak (June 7), maybe focus on a release order Zelda franchise run after that.

 

Also behind on Mario.  I played through most of Galaxy 2, but didn't get to the final levels (which I understand can be a real PITA).  Haven't started New Super Mario Wii or U, 3D World or Odyssey.

Not blasphemous, 2D Zelda has always been superior and far more consistent, especially in terms of how they age. I don't think there's a bad game in the mainline series, but Link's Awakening (the original) is my favorite in the series, 2D or otherwise. Ocarina is still a masterpiece, but I'm lukewarm on pretty much every other 3D Zelda until BotW. All worth playing, but I'd pretty much always play LttP or Link's Awakening. Link Between Worlds is also on the short list.

The collector in me wants to buy Zelda tomorrow just to have it, but the gamer in me knows I've only played about 10 hours of Breath of the Wild so the reality of me touching this new one is about 1% chance within the next 6 months.

I don't think that the idea is that you get someone to get rid of their PS5 or Switch and then come over with both feet only in Xbox. The idea is that your platform has so many 9/10 or 10/10 games on it that are exclusive to that console, that they want to own an Xbox Series X to play those games in the best way possible.

 

I mean shoot, I bought a 2nd Switch at the start of the pandemic just so my wife and I could play Animal Crossing together. 1 game made me invest in a second hardware system from Nintendo. If Xbox makes the games and makes them exclusive to Xbox, people will buy the console to play the games. Spider-man and Miles Morales were the main reasons I wanted the PS5, all the other great exclusives they have are just icing on the cake.

 

I hope that Phil was just having a bad week and that we see tons of exclusives coming soon at this Showcase coming up. Xbox needs something great so that we aren't forced to talk about Zelda in the Xbox thread here.

I wanted Phil Spencer fired more than anybody ever has,even before it became fashionable to hate on Xbox while everyone was still on the hate Don Mattrick train. 10 years later and the state of xbox is still being blamed on Don Mattrick? Surely 10 years later Phil has to be taking some of that blame? I mean aside from Game Pass what did he give us during the Xbox One era? He cancelled the cult classic Phantom Dust reboot and gave us Voodoo Vince remaster? A game that nobody asked for? WTF!? Halo is at the lowest point the franchise has ever been under his leadership. Phil is a nice guy but they need someone with more of a killer instinct imo.

 

Playstation basically took the same Xbox 360 playbook and ran back at Xbox during PS4 era but better. Their console was easier to develop for, cheaper and they had better exclusives including the rights to Call of Duty, best selling franchise. Xbox actually started the generation with the better exclusives with Ryse Son of Rome and Sunset Overdrive and then it's like they just forgot that they needed games for their gaming console lol. PS4 didn't have any good games until a couple of years later with Bloodborne.  That was a huge win for them. FromSoftware don't miss.

 

When Phil says, Starfield being 11/10 isn't going to get Playstation owners to sell their console what he is saying is that he is not interested in going after the millions of console players, they are going after the billions of PC, mobile and cloud users. The problem is I don't care about the cloud or playing on my mobile unless I'm on the shitter or at the dentist's office. I just want games that are going to take advantage and show off the power of my brand new top of the line console.

 

Microsoft is a software company so selling recurring Game Pass subscriptions is part of their MO. I'm happy with Game Pass because it provides me value. They currently have 23 development studios, 32 if the ABK deal goes through. The games WILL come, they just simply have too many studios now for there not to be any games coming. Keep in mind that many of their studios such as Obsidian are also working on 2-3 games at the same time.

 

Great games is what sells Consoles. That's why the Wii U failed after breaking records with the Wii, that and a stupid name. No mainline Mario game and no Zelda game for the entire generation.  Breath of the Wild came at the end of Wii U's life cycle and launch of Switch. I guarantee you had they launched Wii U with Breath of the Wild that console would have sold way more. Great games will even make people over look a game's technical shortcomings such as Jedi Survivor. That's why people crucified Redfall for being 30 FPS but are giddy to play Zelda at 20 FPS lol. The Xbox 360 had so many great exclusive blockbuster games that LITERAL WIDESPREAD SYSTEM MELTDOWNS – the Red Ring of Death – didn't slow down console sales or people's love for the Xbox 360, even when they had to go through 3, 4, or 5 systems because of it. Let that sink in!

I have zero issues with what Phil said. He’s not saying Xbox doesn’t need or isn’t getting great exclusives. All he said was that Xbox was too far behind to catch up to PlayStation. It’s a fact. It just isn’t going to happen. And honestly I could care less who is “winning” in console sales.

Xbox is still going to be trying to make great exclusives. Period. Honesty I’m tired of even talking or reading about the interview. Too much fuss over nothing IMO. As an Xbox owner since day one, it didn’t bother me and I’m still excited about the future.

No better Mario game has been released since. 3D world is a perfect old school Mario experience in 3D form. I had to redo plenty of levels due to running out of time, and the multiplayer experience is perfection. Odyssey and Bowsers fury are Mario themed open world walking simulators.
