Well, I go to the Eb in the Sunvalley Mall in Concord, CA yesterday and buy a used copy of Devil May Cry 2. Guy puts a seal on the case, saying "return in 14 days if unopened". I get home and open it up, and turns out they gave me some bogus DVD type case. No memory card slot, and the two discs were stacked one on top of the other, almost like they could be easily scratched.
Decide to go to my local EB at Hilltop Mall in Richmond, CA and try and return it. Guy there was very understanding, made a comment about scratching the discs too. Went and tried to find a case to switch for me, but they were out. I ask him if I can trade in the old one, and just pay the $2 difference and get a sealed copy. Guy was cool about it and said yes. Even mentioned to me about DMC 3, and showed me the PSM with Dante on the cover about it.
Rings up the new copy as I'm glancing over the magazine and as I'm baout to leave he lets me take the mag "for my troubles". Very pleasant experience and from now on, except for maybe Gamestop's Buy 2 get 1 Free deals, I'm doing my videogame purchases at EB.
Hmm...so one EB screws ya (sorta), and the other one lets you steal...
its not really stealing, the employee gave it to him. just his luck.
Just because the employee was nice doesn't mean EB's policies don't suck ass.
Which policies are those? Most of them seem to be fairly standard across the industry, with the exception of a few locations that were selling used games as new...which they were punished for.

Something similar happened to me. I had some game pre-ordered, I can't remember what it was, but I know it was around the time GMR started. Well, I hadn't followed the game after I pre-ordered it, so I wasn't aware that it had been pushed back, and I went to the store the day it was supposed to come out originally, not calling ahead or recieving a call from EB, I just assumed it came out. I went there, asked for the game, and when he told me it was pushed back, I got so mad. He could tell because I tensed up and the smile of excitement of getting a new game vanished in a split second. I quickly commanded him angerly to take my money off the game for I was really pissed. I looked around the store to see if there was something else I'd like tp put money down on, and I saw the magazine rack. I saw GMR, I had never seen it before and it looked interesting, I picked up and asked him about it. He told me about the EB Edge card and all that, so I told him I'd get it later. He said, "Here, go ahead and take this", and he handed me the magazine. This is very small, of couse, compared what they have given me before. They've given me a couple of pins only EB employees get, as well as other cool lil' thingies, they also let me put dibs on a Mace Griffin cardboard stand-up, which I brought home when they were done using. I have yet to put dibs on another one, but when the Halo 2 stand-up gets there (I know they'll get one), I'm not gonna hesitate to ask.
What game was worth getting pissed about its release?...I would just say "o well...Ill just have to wait"...
I'm trying to think of it, I'm thinking it was PSO, but if that was it, then I took the money off for no reason, 'cause I got it anyway.

PSO is a great game. I would have been angry as well, but I wouldn't have asked for my pre-order money back.

I'm not totally sure if it was PSO, but I'm almost certain. And I'm not sure if I ended up taking the money off anyway, I get ahead of myself a lot of times, and I'm pretty sure my Dad talked me into keeping the money on it in the end.

Indeed.. I've had nothing but pleasant experiences with EB.

Just yesterday I got .hack//mutation in the mail, preowned from ebgames.com.. but it didn't come with the dvd. So I took it to my local ebgames and they said that the preowned version doesn't come with the dvd.. which I find to be pretty easy to believe (they should really state that in the preowned .hack//mutation description on the website), but he turned around and gave me the dvd from a display box. Awesome.

I sold my ps2 to eb about a week ago with no problem (it had been opened and the seal was broken) he didnt even test it...just asked me if it was broken...also...I had to send my xbox in for repairs and it was within the 90 days...but microsoft said it wasnt...i looked and looked for my reciept but it couldnt be found...I called the that I know at EB and he tells me that he will trace my reciept and call the central office in las vegas and have them send him the copy of it...i didnt even ask all I ask is if they kept records of the reciepts at the store...he was glad to do this for me...i have had nothing but good experieces at EB...

Ya I have had some good experiences at Eb like last week i was in there looking for pennie guides it was right be for closing and i had found a bunch I showed the guy and he said hold on a sec and scanned all the guides I thought he was going to say sry Can't do this but he did something on the computer and walked into the back and came out with like 15 guides that were for a pennie then asked how much i owed him? and he said you own me putting them in the bag and taking them out of the store it was great i got like 40 pennie guides for free those are the cool ppl that work at Eb not the ass one's who are like no you can't take these or sumthing like that and as for the return policy i can't rly say but what I do know is it beats the crap outta best bu's return policy.

As a former manager, I can tell you lots of things. My EB didn't even put out magazines at one time since we didn't have the room. We gave them away too. The pennied guides are to be thrown away the day they are dropped so it's no big deal to give it away. They are not in inventory anymore. Don't even get me started on open games. I was very careful when we gut a game to be placed on the shelf. Most of the people didn't care and would scratch a brand new one just shoving it in the bag. My favorite is that when someone would return a defective game we would just put it back in the drawer. Officially we weren't supposed to take back any game that was open but we did. District manager said if they call her then she will do it. So we look like idiots enforcing a policy we have to follow only to be back doored by a DM. That customer then thinks we are morons and that EB is a great company. Next time they just yell in the store until they get their way. Trust me, I was a loyal EB customers for years until things started changing. If people knew what went on there they wouldn't buy anything. It's so easy to sue them for deception.

Ok chaps, bottom line - if you don't want to deal with any retarded situations don't buy pre-owned and don't go into the store! The whole system is a joke - every disk I have seen someone buy pre-owned has been scratched to all shit. I'm sure EB makes the majority of their profits from preowned games which they pick up off of broke kids for 10% of their actual value. Best bet is to buy new from EBGames.com which has always been reliable and fast. You get to avoid the policies and don't have to deal with ignorant employees (not that all are, but many).

Sort of a similar topic, I seriously can't understand anyone who would sell their games back to a major retailer for pennies on the dollar... if you buy a new game then go to sell it to them 1 week later they give you < 50% of the value. If you must sell, use EBay! It just doesn't make sense people... EB buys low and sells high and you buy high and sell low. Who wins? Certainly not you!
