mafia 3 free to play until 5-7-20

CAGiversary!
2k has a new promotion during the pandemic they are offering a free game each week. I have little info about this but I'm playing mafia 3 on xbox one currently. feel free to post with details if you want. I barely remeber playing this on last gen, I think I played a few hours and quit. now though I'm really enjoying it as a time-filler, it's a good gta rip-off.

Mafia 3:

I've had it on the PC for a while. I'll share some thoughts.

Once you get beyond the game's first great 3 linear hours or so with great storytelling, presentation, and immersion - the game unfortunately opens up itself too much, turning more into a UbiSoft open-world template here with meaningless collect-a-thons, destroy-a-thons, fetch quests, and other MMO-like quests (Kill X guys, defeat X guys, go to X areas, etc) than say a GTA game normally does (barring GTA: Online).

Yeah, GTA has some of these MMO-like quests, sure...but they actually often have interesting and crafted missions; I'm not counting GTA: Online here though. Unfortunately, a lot of the great storytelling & presentation gets broken-up way too much b/c it's at odds w/ the game's grind-y open-world stuff.

I highly recommend M3's DLC's/Season Pass because once the game opens up...you really need the DLC's to break-up a lot of the grind and UbiSoft open-world MMO-quest-a-thon. There's a more lot more mission types and variety of gameplay in the DLC's - i.e. for example, Faster Baby DLC has some vehicular combat type of missions.

Its boring, picked up x1 copy for $5.99 a while ago. Its so different from mafia 1 and 2.

Mafia 1 and 2 were much more linear, right out the gate.

I think that's M3's biggest problem: it didn't know how to balance the open-world experience and story-telling thing, especially since M3 is great at storytelling, presentation, and narrative. The open-world experience and grind gets in the way of the stuff that this game does best.

Another potentially great narrative experience ruined by Ubi's obsession with shoehorning copy/paste open-world aspects into ever game

I don't know why every game company outside of UbiSoft - such as BioWare with DA:I and ME:A and Hangar 13 here with Mafia 3 - wants to copy the UbiSoft open-world approach.

MysterD will probably disown me from the PC family, but I own disc copies of this game on PS4 and Xbox One.  On the upside, I've never played either copy.  :whistle2:k

This post is confusing. What platform is it free on? It doesn't look free on Xbox Live.

Also Mafia III was never on last gen, OP must be confusing it with Mafia II.

What do you mean you played it "last gen"? Mafia 3 has only been on PS4 and Xbox One.

no it's the full game but you'd have to really cram to play it all the way through by the 7th. I've been playing it 8 hours a day for 3 days. I think what they mean by trial is you can play it until then , then it locks. they say progress will carry over if you purchase the game. anyways, I'm playing it on xbox and I checked yesterday it's not part of gamepass, which I have. but MysterD is pretty spot-on with his comments about the game. I don't think I'd be playing it so much if not for the quarrantine. trying to cram to the end then on the 7th red dead redemp[tion 2 comes on gamepass. deathscythe thanks for the link, if I wasnt in a hurry I should have found a link, I installed it remotely and was away from pc where I could have posted to CAG. and as the link says they'll be doing a different game each week. not a sports player myself so probably will skip alot of the offers.

Have to be REALLY careful with the Xbox version of this game. It's a good game and I put many hours into it. The programmers thought it was a good idea to only allow one save AND only allow that save to be an auto-save AND the auto-save can activate in the middle of action. I had put a good 20-25 hours into the game and the $#$%%$# game auto-saved right before I was killed (less than a second). I loaded into the game right when I died. Could not pause or anything, just would load right into death. Since it was the only save it just looped me dying over and over. Contacted 2K and (as expected) got a reply pretty much telling me there was nothing they could do but start the game over from the beginning. From what I read, the PS4 and PC versions have the same feature but you can somehow access previous auto-saves in a temporary file section. I mean, if somebody has has a fix for this please message me because I have the save on my Xbox still but I researched this for hours and I have found no way to fix it. As I said though, the game itself is pretty fun and the atmosphere, acting, and story is excellent.

Mafia 2 got some weird backlash because people wanted it to be a GTA clone instead of a linear story-driven game. So then with Mafia 3 they did that, believing it would be more successful, but instead alienated those of us who liked the earlier ones vOv

personally I still liked 3 but it definitely got repetitive

I have a question.  I already own the disc of the Xbox One version, but I'm planning to download the game to the external hard drive that I use for larger games.  Will I be able to play the game from the hard drive after the Free to Play Days event is over if I insert the disc?

It's okay. I ain't gonna disown you.

2K must like you, since you double-dipped on X1 and PS4. Heck, they might love you even more, if you get it on PC. ;)

I'd say if you do want to get it on PC for some reason...catch it in dirt-cheap sale, Humble Bundle, Fanatical Bundle, or something of that sort.

Since you own it on 2 platforms already, dunno if you really need to own it again.

There's also a PC mod (never tried) that tries to eliminate a lot of the grind-y stuff:
