Shenmue 3 with steelbook $19.99 Bestbuy.com (back again)

Man games get so cheap so quick now. I bought this for like 45 bucks back when it first came out with a discount I had. If I had waited I could buy the steelbook and all the DLC for cheaper. Oh well. It's a really good game so I'm okay with having played it after waiting 18 years or whatever it was for the game.

I used to love preordering and buying games at launch. The last time I did this now was for AC Odyssey. Nowadays I’ve been burned way too many times playing broken games while paying full price so I just wait six months or so and get the fully working game at half price.

It’s a shame how the industry operates today.

I can't even remember the last time I paid full price for a game.

Really hoping they make tons of extra steels for Cyberpunk as there is more than one model for the case. I'd love that to eventually hit like $5 then swoop into my local BB and nab a couple more for fun.

You should join the cheapassgamer unleaded (opposite of premium) club. To be a member all you have to do is be ultra cheap like instead of buying games at launch wait til they're out awhile and pay $20 or less. I don't find the games any less satisfying if I wait.

A member for decades. I can't recall ever paying full launch retail for a game.

Of course, I am 2+ years behind the trends.

Yeah you can wait. I wait for a good portion though I tend to purchase pretty niche games on release. Only ones I wouldn't wait on for more AAA games are multiplayer games you will be playing with friends. Just don't read too many articles about certain games on release and after about a month at most (generally a few days for most releases) people will have moved on to another new game consuming it. Very few games are evergreen or even worth playing twice. I still don't know how someone can finish a game like Persona 5 and then immediately go into new game plus, but that's just different than my own personality. I do feel rouge lites/likes tend to get me to play games through multiple times.

I don’t play online so I can afford to wait. If you want to play with the crowd, you do have to jump early.

I got the LRG version of this, but wanted that steelbook, so I got it for $24 after GCU, and then traded the game in to gamestop. I don't remember exactly how much I got from them, but I'm sure it was close to $20, and minimized the cost of just getting the Steelbook alone.

Is this game basically like Shenmue 2? I bought Shenmue HD a few weeks ago and tried playing Shenmue 2 but it's painful. I'm convinced people forced themselves to like it because it's a niche game or whatever, like hipsters who purposely listen to bad indie music to seem cool.

Uhh what? The game was released 20 years ago, of course it’s going to be dated.

I'm confused at this response. You quoted me and are putting words in my mouth. I never said it was because it was dated. The game design sucks. It forces you to do long, boring things to make money and it's filled with annoying quick time events. Compared to games that came out during the same year it's bad.

Did anyone's order here arrived beat up? I ordered this and of course they shipped the steelbook with the game inside a standard envelope. The steelbook arrived with a dinged in the corner upon arrival.

Did you like Shenmue 1? I thought 1 was better than 2 and I played them both when they came out. No reason to insult the fans btw, a simple "Is Shenmue 3 similar to Shenmue 2? I did not like Shenmue 2" would have been fine.

People are finding this game for $9 at Walmart on clearance. It may not come with a steelbook, but still $11 off this price.

I don't think you're gonna like Shenmue 3 then. Speaking as someone who loves 1 and 2 (and even still likes them after playing the "remaster"), 3 is just not good. It's busywork. I don't even think you can make the argument that they're trying to retain the awkward charm of the earlier games by making it purposefully slow and dated because they went too far with the busywork and slogged down the pacing so badly that any enjoyment is gone.

The problem with this is ... well, it's at Walmart, for one. And second, the prices are hardly universal and we all know how unreliable inventory check is at Brickseek.

Easier to grab it at Best Buy - it comes with free shipping, folks.

Is it really "free" shipping if you are paying an extra $11 for the game. The whole point of this site is to find games for the cheapest prices.

People can make their own decisions about the best deal.  In my view, spending time driving around to walmart(s) looking for a ymmv clearance item in current conditions is a terrible decision.

Calm down. Best Buy comes with a nice steelbook. More importantly, spending time to get something is worth money to some people (more for others, obviously), so the convenience of getting it delivered is valuable (again, more to some than others).

For me, I'll easily pay $9 to not have to go inside a Walmart. This is not to mention that buying Shenmue 3 at Best Buy then lets you pick up some of their other great deals on blurays that I otherwise would not hit the shipping threshold for.

Exactly, I don't see how people can deal with Walmart. I would pay extra to go somewhere else. Even Walmart's store pickups sucks. I attempted to use it twice and once they couldn't find the product I ordered despite saying they got it in and left with nothing (and of course, the managers at Walmart don't give a shit and won't even give an apology) and another time took almost an hour to find it. Not to mention, Walmart does get a rough crowd of people (at least at the ones I've seen) loitering in the parking lots, soliciting you things, etc. and feels unsafe especially at night.

So if a game is $19.99 at BB or $9.99 at Walmart I would choose BB.

Not everybody has a Best Buy, but everybody has a Walmart, and Best Buy's return policy is atrocious. They charge you money to put stuff back on the shelves when you return it. It's like punishing you for shopping there. Once the game discount ran out, a lot of people saw no reason to keep shopping there. They've also closed tons of locations recently due to Covid 19 and not being considered an essential retail business. Walmarts are still open everywhere. Also, there are only 977 Best Buys in the entire world, and there are currently 11,500 Walmarts. It's not hard to believe that more people would buy games at Walmart than at Best Buy strictly for convience sake. The closest Best Buy to me before Covid 19 was almost 30 miles away. The closest Walmarts are 4, 6, 9, 10, and 13 miles away.

Whatever to finding it at Walmart for $9. I’m not running all over town to find a game I barely care about anyways. I ordered mine from Best Buy yesterday and it came today. One day I’ll get to it. It’s more nostalgia from my Dreamcast days that makes me want it than anything else.

This, also I can't believe Zantra is even suggesting Wal-Mart himself. He did mention that he got sick for a while, from the Target thread.

With the outbreak going, I'd rather stay safe and not take my chances. Having it shipped to home with a nice steelbook, is the better option here.

Agree 100% with you, bmcgrevy. Nowadays, my preference is always to avoid going inside to retail.

There really are so few things worth going to stores for, and games are definitely not one of them.

What were you trying to return to Best Buy? The restocking fee only applies to high end items like cell phones, tablets, and drones.

A $5 DVD. But, ignore what I said, I thought you could get the $9 price online and just pick it up from a local store. But, apparently Walmart has different online prices than in-store prices. And, a guy on SlickDeals said that he got them to honor the $9 price in store and refund the rest of his money, but it sounds like a hassle. The Best Buy deal is slightly better, if you don't want the hassle. The good news is that Walmart is going to start forcing people to wear masks, cleaning their stores, and having hand sanitizer stations all over the place, starting August 1st.

And, I am still very sick unfortunately. I just had a lapse in judgement for a second.

Not sure what problem you had with returning a DVD to BB. I returned Blu-rays and a game a few times at 2 different BBs since the lockdown and had no issues or restocking fees. Both stores didn't allow people to enter stores but allowed curbside order pick-ups and returns.

Also, if you actually are still sick, I hope you haven't gone out shopping at all, mask or not...

I haven't been shopping. The 30 miles away Best Buy is in a town with a lot of crime, so to deter people from returning stolen goods for cash, they charge everyone for returns. No matter the price of the item. They also keep every single thing locked up, so it's really a pain in the ass to shop there. I personally haven't been in a physical store since March.

Thanks bro. Got it for $9 this evening. Brickseek says "Out of Stock" at my local WM but I was able to find a copy between a row of PS4 games.

This whole logic is ridiculous. What's true for you isn't necessarily true for everyone else. I can get to 4 different BBY easily and the closest Walmart is at least an hour's drive away.

14 day Return policy is ass for those who only qualify for that, I will give you that much, but your restocking fee fiasco is, as you stated, a special circumstance local to that one particular store.

Feel better guy and maybe take a breather before bashing something while you are still unwell.

I wasn't really bashing anything, just saying that Walmart has a cheaper deal, which is what this site is about. I'm not trying to get anybody to shop anywhere specific, except for maybe Target when I post the (extremely rare) Circle deals lately. Do whatever makes you the happiest, and stay safe out there.

Damn this is annoying. I saw this the first day that sale went live, put it in the cart and went through the rest of their sale games. Came back and hour later and the Steelbook offer part was magically missing from it no matter how I looked at the sale/item. Guess it was just broken somehow or went back up. Really bummed because I was waiting on this for a while.
