Best Buy YMMV Thread

mikeshinobi

CAGiversary!
Can we have a thread where we share deals we find at our local Best Buys? Of course they're always YMMV but it would give us ideas of what to look out for.

I have two local best buys and each of them had different deals:

Best Buy #1:

  • Dragon Quest Builders 2 (NSW): $15.99
Best Buy #2:

  • Disgaea 4 (NSW): $15.99
  • Dead Cells (NSW): $10.99
  • Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology (3DS): $12.99 (didn't get this, very sad)
  • Some other 3DS title I was extremely sad I missed out on (3DS): $10.99
There were some others but these were the ones that stood out the most that I can remember.

Also for anyone who doesn't know, if your Best Buy has a price placard out for a game but they're sold out, you can ask an employee to order it for you from their website and they will match their in-store price! Of course they have to have stock on the website though.

Ah the ol ymmv store threads. Brings a tear to my eye; reminds me of the earlier days of CAG where people were friendly to each other and everyone was just trying to get good deals.

I support this!

Thanks for posting legends of heroes 3. It was $18.99 in store along xenoblades $40.

Here is something i have not seen posted yet.

Control deluxe edition ps4 is $17.99.

I know control was $10 ymmv at Wal-Mart, but i can never get walmart deals. As always, ymmv because these are in store only and i have seen different prices from different stores.

Went today, Pokémon sword and shield were also 40 each. I also don’t know if it’s part of the ad, but breath of the wild was 50, snack world was 41, Mario ofdysee was 50, Mario party was 50, Kirby was 50, as were a few other games. With GCU for those that have it, 40 for most first party switch games isn’t bad.

The prices are YMMV but they are consistent across stores. So one store may have a price at $20 and another at $23 but the next store should be one of the two. From what I've seen anyways.

With *extremely* rare exception (such that I literally never saw it save for on extremely old Televisions that were discovered in the warehouse), the price at one Best Buy is the price at every Best Buy. That said, Best Buy's system is very methodical, very rigid, and *very* procedural. The number goes down x% every few weeks or so, and if you can find something super old at a Best Buy, it'll be marked down to damn-near nothing.

The way all of this works is that supplier contracts of some sort dictate that the individual store itself takes a hit on certain merchandise that goes unsold after a certain period of time (in most cases it's "until the new models come out" but with software it's... *gestures wildly* who knows). That negative number cuts into margin totals, which is what drives all sorts of bonuses and metrics for the store management, as well as their regional managers.

So, Best Buy Corporate progressively tells stores to lower prices and put things on clearance to make the items more attractive to buyers. What this means to you is that sometimes a supplier wanted Best Buy to have this item sold in three months, it's been two years, and Best Buy Corporate has decided "holy hell, if anyone still has this, just sell it for $10, we're tired of paying the supplier missed EOL payments."

Anyway it's 3AM and the SQL query I'm running is taking forever, if you can't tell.

I would love to get Disgaea 4+ Complete for that price, but it doesn't look like there's a store within 250 miles of me that has it. Sad panda.

Picked up 2 copies Dragon Quest Builders 2 (NSW): $15.99 and Fire Emblem Warriors (NSW) $15.99 as well. Doom Collection (X1) $7.99.  It's a good deal ;)

Switch console red blue JC available on best buy website now. My local gamestop also got some in today

Clearance prices generally change on Fridays now (used to be Monday before that became the start of the week for deals). Prices can vary wildly from store to store and the website too. Even the website can have better deals then stores. Mine ran out of Tour de France 2019 last week because we were fulfilling orders for the $11 online price (in store it was $33). Some games do have a "floor" price though that they will never go under. Quite a few haven't changed at all in 7-8 months.

sweet score on builders 2. Gonna have to swing by the closest best buy and see if they have a copy. Thanks.

Dragon Quest Builders 2 (Switch) was $21.99 at my store, still a solid deal. Didn't see much else there.

The Switch version of FEW for $15.99, no kidding? My Best Buys have the 3DS version for that price but I didn't bother to list it because it's easy to find for cheaper ($11.85 on Amazon right now lol). I'll have to keep my eye out for that one.

Mass Genie was offering it for $19.99 last year, as that is when I got it. I found it enjoyable for that price.

My store had Dragon Quest Builders 2 (NSW) for $25.  I also found Shining Resonance Refrain (NSW) for $20.99.

Purchased those along with Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield @ $40 each.

I had been looking for some decent sale items to get me over the $250 Best Buy hump this month, which I needed to spend on my BB Visa to earn an additional $25 rewards certificate.

At my local BB, picked up Dragon Quest Builders 2 (NSW) for 15.99 and Trails of Cold Steel III (PS4) for 18.99.

All the prices on the placard were wrong (old higher values), they still had the paper tags, so prob worth asking someone to price check it.

Saw tons of Xenoblades and Pokemon Sword/Shield for $40.

Hit the Wilmington, DE (Concord Pike) BB this afternoon, picked up:

Dragon Quest Builders 2 (Switch) - $15.99 (one left at the time)

Raiden V: Director's Cut LE (Switch) - $12.99 (one left at the time)

Doom Slayers Collection (PS4) - $12.99

Saw tags for:

New Super Lucky's Tale (Switch) - $10.99

My Time at Portia (Switch) - $12.99 (2 left)

Doom Slayers Collection (XB1) - $7.99 (1 left but it was not factory shrink wrapped, not sure if they all came like that or not)

That’s a nice price for Disgaea 4 and Radiant Historia. RH dropped to $27.99 in my area but they’re sold out now. The e-shop has had it as low as $19.99 but I would prefer a physical copy.

Currently keeping an eye on Wasteland 2 NSW but it refuses to drop below $22.99.

Oh that reminds me, there was a tag for Wasteland 2 (Switch) for $10.99 at the BB I was at today, but it was sold out.

That's an awesome deal on new super lucky's tale, might have to go check for that one.

Fire Emblem Warriors (3DS) was reduced to $4.99 now. I bought a few copies at that price just to hold onto because when my brain sees "$4.99" and "Fire Emblem" and "it's on a Nintendo console" I just can't help myself, even if it is a musou game and not an actual FE title.

Also, Travis Strikes Again (NSW) was reduced to $14.99

Wish I saw this thread sooner. Over the weekend I checked out a BBY near these 2 stood out:

Planescape Torment & Icewind Dale - $8.98
Shenmue I & II Launch Edition - $8.98

Both PS4

I went looking for Fire Emblem Warriors Nintendo Switch at a local Best Buy but they were sold out. But they did have two copies left of Dragon Quest Builders 2 NS for $15.99 clearance price. I bought one & learned my 20% GCU discount doesn’t work on in store clearance games, but still- I’m happy with the price. Seems like a neat game. I also noticed they were sold out of Freedom Planet NS, had only one copy left of Mighty Switch Force Collection NS, only one Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy NS, one left of The Wonderful 101: Remastered NS & a bunch more NS games I can’t remember right now were sold out. Noticed only two copies of Pokémon: Shield but they had a bunch of Pokémon: Sword. They also had a bunch of Super Mario 3D All-Stars & a bunch of Xenoblade Chronicles.

Tyrok, do you know if GCU is supposed to work on in store clearance prices games??

I know it does for online clearance games....

Picked up:

Wolfenstein: Youngblood Deluxe Edition - Xbox One $7.99

Fallout 76: Wastelanders Standard Edition - Xbox One w/free Steelcase $5.99

Sushi Striker: The Way of Sushido - Nintendo Switch $9.99

Picked up the following today:

The Legend of Heroes Trails of Cold Steel III (PS4) - 18.99

Just Cause 4 (PS4) - 6.49

Wolfenstein Youngblood (PS4) - 7.99

Borderlands 3 (PS4) - 7.99

Sushi Striker (NSW) - 9.99

Went looking for Trails of Cold Steel III and Wolfenstein Youngblood on PS4.

Found TCS for $18.99. Got Wolfenstein Youngblood: Deluxe on XB1 for $7.99, and the Doom Slayers Collection on XB1 for $7.99 as well.

TCS rang up at $50.99 at mine and I put it back. Am in Colorado.
Also ordered Fallout 76 and it is the regular edition not the wastelander one. I know the dlc is free, but there is a newer release of the game that says wastelanders on the box with a different cover or slip cover. I am not sure if the patch is on the newer disc or not.

A little mad that I paid $20 for Shenmue III w/steelbook like last month or so but still a good game in my opinion, so I’m not too mad lol.

Picked up-
Evil Within 2- 7.99

Found a copy of Control Deluxe for 17.99 in the wild today at a best buy a little out of the way when I picked up my ACNH Switch, so thanks for whoever mentioned that!

Saw these as well:

Dragon Star Varnir PS4 - $24.99
Yu-no: A Girl who Chants... SW - 15.99 (this might be an old price, but I remember it being a little higher than this)

Didn't see it mentioned yet, but just picked up Raiden V on Switch for $12.99

Also grabbed Shenmue 3 for the $7.99 deal and also picked up a copy of Just Cause 4 for PS4 for $9.99.

Seems like Best Buy is making room for those next/current-gen releases coming up.

Yup, all the toys in the Xbox section were moved/dropped to make room the new games. The PS section did the same but probably for PS5-only accessories because they aren't universal like Xbox and the game section is already big enough.

I don’t know how you guys are finding these clearance games. The video games sections in the stores in my area are bare bones. I’m not mad just jealous.

You sure? I picked up xenoblade (not clearance 39.99) and sushi striker (clearance 9.99) and both took off the gcu
Yes. I tried to buy Superbeat Xonic in store, which was marked as clearance, and it wouldn't take anything off. Perhaps Sushi Striker was not flagged as clearance in their POS?

When I had GCU (don't anymore) it worked on clearance games online but did not work on clearance games in store. It worked on sale price games though. Which may be the reason why Sushi Striker is getting the discount. It is a clearance SKU at Best Buy but it actually has been "On sale" a couple times now for $9.99, after which it goes back up to the normal "clearance" price of $25.99 (or whatever it was). I'm guessing the GCU is working because it is currently considered a sale price and not a clearance price.

I checked an email today from Best Buy and it had a small banner that once I clicked it added a 5 dollar cert to my account, valid today only. YMMV. I used it to knock off 5 bucks on those LOTR 4K steelbooks!
