Forgot to snap a pic but I was at Big Lots earlier and saw two Lego Dimensions story packs for sale:

Ghostbusters - $18

Fantastic Beasts - $18

Don't know if other options are available and they're not listed on the website. These seem to be going for about $25.

Big Lots also has a coupon program with a 15% sign-up discount for new members.

Yeah, saw those this past weekend as well.. the stores I went too, also had the 360/PS3/Wii U starter set for $20 as well.

does that come with the portal?
yes the starter set comes with the portal.

I enjoy playing the lego games to relax and already have some of the dimensions disk things from a batch of lego i bought so i picked up the ps3 starter yesterday thanks to the OG post. Caveat emptor. The batman disk did not work in the package i got. This was a known problem that i found online. You cannot play the game without a character that can grapple objects. IDK if his batarangs can be substituted by Gandalf's magic blasts. I couldnt get past the very first room without him but I found an extra batman disk that worked in other stuff I had so I got lucky.

I saw these today at Big Lots, they had in stock LEGO Dimensions starter sets for the PlayStation 3, Wii U, and Xbox 360. They were part of the Black Friday sale, the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them story packs were selling for $13.50 and the starter sets for $15. My wife mentioned to me that she recently saw LEGO Dimensions at a Ross Store although she only glanced at the items and was not sure of the price or what type (i.e., Starter Pack, Story Packs, Level Packs, Team Packs, Fun Packs) of LEGO it was.

Now, here's an important question!

QUESTION: Do you need all the LEGO Dimensions sets in order to fully enjoy and complete the game?

You do not need ALL the sets, but you would need at least one hero with each unique ability in order to 100% the game. You’d need to go find the google sheets some built to see the “minimum set” and decide if you want to do it. Some things might be pretty hard to track down at this point. I think the reddit page for the game would probably have the spreadsheet pinned.

Also, keep in mind that you need the Sonic figure to do the Sonic DLC....and the Sonic figure sells for around $35, just for the base (no figure).

You can finish the base game with just the stuff included in the starter set. It's like skylanders tho, certain stuff is gonna be locked behind characters you don't have. But consider those things side quests or mini games. You won't hit a wall on main game progression with the starter kit.

If achievements or trophies are important to you, I do think those are locked behind characters.

you can get the plat trophy with only the 3 characters included in the starter set. There are dlc trophies that can only be gotten with dlc packs. Starcrest's description above is accurate. If you don't know what Skylanders is like, it's also similar to other Lego games, you can't go certain places or do certain things without characters that have the needed ability. Also, keep in mind that you need the Sonic figure to do the Sonic DLC....and the Sonic figure sells for around $35, just for the base (no figure).
Wow. I should find my sonic base and sell it (and any others) while anyone still cares about them.

Why does Sonic's base go for so much?

If anyone's been struggling to find sets and only has an interest in getting all the trophies/Achievements, there's an app for Android that lets you write special characters like Sonic to blank NFC codes, which can be bought from Amazon for under $10 per 12 I believe. Samsung Galaxy S8/9 can use the app to write to the tags.

Thank you guys (Starcrest, AnubisRW, 315Retro, juubei1i, defpally, and davemoseley) so much for being so helpful, not to mention incredibly informative.

Wow. I should find my sonic base and sell it (and any others) while anyone still cares about them.

Why does Sonic's base go for so much?
Because he unlocks a great adventure pack and he pretty much breaks any timed based challenge in the game. There are some challenges where you have to hit different spots quickly, Sonic makes it crazy easy due to his speed. I just wish they would have gotten the Flash figure out (he was planned), they already had his primary ability coded in Sonic.

Keep in mind, unlike Skylanders there are no "Level Items" to unlock new levels. The level packs unlock by using the character included with the pack.

I had a similar problem with my starter set. It came with 2 Gandalf bases and Batman so I couldn't even get past the opening of the game until I got a Wildstyle base off Amazon for $7.

Who knows...maybe it is the only way to get a Sonic themed lego minifig.

It's the only figure I still need to access all the DLC...I've thought about buying it online, beating the Sonic levels, then reselling it.

This works excellent, and is also a good workaround if you have a real dimensions tag that stops working. I own all the sets except the two that were limited exclusives (Supergirl and Green Arrow) so for those I did the rf tag thing.

It really is a super fun game if you don't mind all the physical swapping and movement of figures on the reader. The interactions between characters are really well done and the variety of characters is really amazing.

Well, this isn't Big Lots, but...

https://twitter.com/Foxhack/status/1334913726819033088

At my local 99 Cent Only store in Calexico, California. In case someone needs Batman.

Marshalls stores are carrying LEGO Dimensions - The Goonies and Mission: Impossible level packs for $17.99 each.

Some of these are really hard to find, as far as character packs go. The good news is these are probably an investment, considering LEGO minifigs tend to gain value over time ... especially some of the rarer, more obscure figures that never had an actual LEGO line.

Ymmv? Big Lots has the 360, PS3, and Wii U starter sets clearance for $12.00. All clearance this week is 50% off- so I just grabbed a few for $6 each.

i am completely forgetting what the ps3 exclusive figure was...

edit: ah it was ps4 and supergirl. wonder if i should sell mine

Definitely. They seemed to be rolling out to stores at different times. Some people saw the starter sets before the ones in the OP but for me it was the other way around and they all sold out before Christmas. Pretty much all that was here locally for the 50% off clearance special were curtains and candles. Definitely no games and very few electronics in general.
