" AUGUST 23rd in stores everywhere!

Championed by Quentin Tarantino as the film of the year at Cannes, Park Chan-Wook’s epic masterpiece of revenge is coming to DVD and UMD! What is a UMD – you might ask. For those of you who aren’t gamers, the UMD disc is the miniature DVD for the new Sony portable gaming system – The PSP (Playstation Portable).

The UMD disc will only play in PSP systems and it contains some special features not available on the regular DVD release."

thats good they are starting to add things to the umd's....considering you pay the same, but can only play it in a psp

yeah i always thought that the whole "no extra content" thing kinda sucked. nice to hear that there's gonna be extra stuff on UMD movies.

Who cares? Extras are lame 99.9% of the time. I could give a shit what Mr. Asshole Director and Mr. Douchebag Actor were thinking when they shot scene X while getting paid $10 million dollars thinking they are the most important people on the planet. Occasionally you get something cool but usually it's the same shit over and over and over...

Actually quite a few movies have bonus features at this point. It was the initial batch of movies that lacked any extra features.

What makes this news is that there are now special features that are exclusive to the UMD format.

I'd still buy the DVD release first as I've got a lot more machines to play it on than the UMD port.

So buy a 2nd PSP, then you've got 2 machines to play the movie on.

So far the only thing killing me is the cost. i feel like i'm getting the same movie with less stuff for a lot more. so far i have only one umd movie, i just ordered today. Even then i only picked it up because i got it for $1.88 shipped.

Scew that. I want the same features first. Don't force me into buying both releases, because if I have to choose it's going to be a DVD not your overpriced closed format. o_O

Maybe if there was a standalone UMD player I could hook-up to my TV....PS3, I'm looking at you!

Even if PS3 had a UMD slot for movies, you do realize it would look like crap right? The only reason they look so good is because they are being played on a tiny screen....playing these on anything bigger and you might as well pickup a bootleg VHS tape.

Yes, I know. But even if it were in some sort of scaled mode, like how the Game Boy Player works. It wouldn't have to take up the whole screen. I have never been like "Hey, maybe I'll watch a movie on my PSP". I only want Ghostbusters and Bad Boys UMDs becuase I'm such a sucker for those franchises. If, say, the Sin City UMD had one feature that is on this uber set that's coming out Christmas I'd be a little pissed.

Finally, I found someone else who doesn't care about extras!

I thought I was alone.

I think UMD would be a higher quality than VCD* (though nowhere near DVD), remember the PSP resolution is 480x272.

*VCD is a CD that plays mpeg encoded video with mpeg layer 3 (mp3) audio, the quality is better than VHS and was popular in asia, but never took off in USA.

I love the VCD format. Well, for what it was. You know what they say: "If you have an Apex DVD player a VCD is your best friend." Okay, maybe they don't say that, but's true. ;)

Well for someone who actually cares about what goes into making a film, commentaries or documentaries are quite underisting.

Since it sounds like the type of movies you watch are probably "the same shit over and over..." like your average summer flick, it doesn't surprise me that you would be bored with special features.

I'm not sure what "underisting" is but it doesn't sound fun. I barely have time enough to spend 2 hours watching a movie let alone the 5 or 6 hours of bonus features that come with it nowadays. Does anyone sit through commentaries for an entire movie? Don't you have anything better to do?

I watch movies purely for entertainment and listening to some tool drone on and on and on about a camera angle or how the movie differs from the book or whatever they happen to talk about couldn't be a bigger waste of time. This is true whether it's a "summer flick" or some pretentious art school shitfest that everyone pretends to like but no one really does.

Why even buy DVDs then (I don't know if you do, you may only rent)? I own close to 300 dvds (100 or so being TV boxsets) and I never have time to watch all the special features, but I eventually do if its something I'm interested in.

For most people, just watching the movie is fine. If you don't care about the art of film-making, fine, you don't have to watch the extras. But a lot of people do want to know more. For example, I found Roger Ebert's commentary on Citizen Kane to be particularly illuminating, and I'm glad I watched it. You like to keep things simple, good for you. No need to get angry at those of us who enjoy watching great films and learning about how they were made.

I think DVDs (for the most part) are a total waste of money, IMO. I own a few DVDs (mostly given to me as gifts) but I never watch them. I just don't have time to watch the same thing over and over again. Certain things like Star Wars or Lord of the Rings are cool to have in case I do feel like watching them again but so far I haven't had the urge. The last movie I watched twice was The Incredibles because my wife hadn't seen it and I didn't mind sitting through it again because it was so good...

I suppose if I could get them for $5 or so I might pick up a couple though - $20 is way too much. Although since I will never ever ever ever set foot in a movie theater again I will buy an occasional DVD instead of renting if I think I will really like it. It's cheaper than the theater and my home set up is a billion times better... I guess I'm just down on movies in general these days.

i figure that if i dont have cable i could save cash. well that cash went straight to video games and dvds. i watch dvds all the time. it's all i watch. i've ;lived without cable for about 2 years now and my gaming habit is getting stronger. ah, fuck it.

What'd you spend money on a home theater set-up for if you dont like movies?

Personally, I didn't have much of a movie collection before DVD. But once it became the primary format, I found myself interested in film as art. So buying DVDs seemed the natural way to go for me. I don't waste my time watching most of the common Hollywood fare, so I watch movies that I'm happy to take my time exploring. To me, collecting DVDs is the same as collecting great works of art or literary masterpieces (which I do as well).

Great... so, now they're going to make us choose between UMD and DVD by giving each one different exclusives?

Since I rarely watch exclusives, this doesn't mean anything to me.

I don't own a PSP and I'm not aware of all the features, or lack thereof, contained on the UMDs. However, from the sounds of it, it doesn't appear today's UMD movies contain any special features. I'm curious as to where this quote comes from as it insinuates today's UMDs already have special features which, based on what I have read in the previous posts, appears to be uninformed drivel.

Without looking into it further, I'm not sure I would make the assumption based on the OP's quote that UMD movies will have additional features.

Actually, one of the porn UMDs uses every feature the PSP has, including video, music, pictures, and games.

I didn't buy it, I um... heard it from a freind.

WTF???? Gamestop just canceled my order last week saying they aren't carrying this item anymore. This is after they canceled all the $9.99 orders and I got that 20% off coupon. fuck them.

I hate how companies sell more than they can provide.

Especially trains and airlines.

Hre's my official video game rumor of the day, this hasnt been published anywhere yet as far as I know, but since its just a rumor, I'm burying it in this thread :)

Tarantino is also releasing Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2, both movies on one UMD at one low price.

If this doesnt pan out dont hate me too much, but my soures are pretty good.

That sounds like crap since putting both movies on disc would mean 4+ hours of video... basically, the quality would look like crap, worse than VHS. I don't know who thought up of that rumor but they need to try again...

I thought that too, I'm thinking 2 umd's in one package, but I'm just going with what I'm told, for now.

There's a typo in your topic title, there's an "s" after "movie" that just shouldn't be there.

They could release both discs together. . .

I have to agree with you on that one. Commentaries generally suck IMO, and the only extras I am actually interested in are concept art and creature designs. Everything else can blow me.
