Impressions on SSX: On Tour

CAGiversary!
Picked this game up on launch day and have played a good couple hours each night since then so I think I have played enough to give a review on this game.

First off you can't talk about this game w/o first talking about the art direction. It's that teenager pencil sketching art that at first turned me off but grew on me pretty quickly. Of course this is only in the menu selection so not really that much of an impact. The graphics in game are great as they are in all the SSX games. The gameplay is where I feel in love with the game. The sense of speed is great, really nice this year since they added a motion blur. Infact the shortest way to explain SSX is that it is Burnout on a snowboard. It's got the speed, boost, close misses, etc. Infact this game has alot in common w/ the burnout series. The "On Tour" mode is just like the "World Tour" mode. You play different type of races from trick races, regular races, knocking out races, etc. The game is difficult but it's not easy. The On Tour mode is long and has alot of unlockables. In the On Tour mode you also get to buy new boards, new tricks, new gear and so on. Also sking has been added to the game. It's not going to replace snowboarding but at least it doesn't feel like just a add on. Felt like the put some solid time into the controls.

My only negatives with the game is the lack of multiplayer. There is no xbox live which just plain sucks. Also the split-screen multiplayer doesn't really work because the "free ride" mode where you do multiplayer is mostly just more mini-missions from the on tour mode. Also I picked this game on the xbox but I would recommend to get this game on the ps2 instead. SSX was a launch title on the ps2 and it still feels like the dualshock is the best controller for this game.

All in all I am having a blast with this title. The on tour mode is fun but the lack of online mutiplayer is a real downer. However the title was only 39.99 which easies the pain a little. I'm giving it a 8.0. :)

Does it still have an open mountain sort of thing that was in SSX3? The thing where you could take the lift to the top and go down the entire mountain from peak 3 to the bottom of peak 1?

Have you played SSX3? If so, how would it compare to that? I didn't really like SSX3, but picked up the demo of On Tour and enjoyed it a lot. I really want to pick these one up. I appreciate your time; it's nice to hear a good review.
