Dragon Quest VIII is hitting the PS2 next week!

Game ships on Nov. 15th.

Check it out...

I'm about 20 hours into the game right now it's awesome.

I'll have a review ready in a few days.

I have beat 1-3, but I am somewhere in the middle of DW7, it hurts me that they kept it so oldschool in number 7, it should at least have the updated way of how menus work, how does DW8 handle the menus?

It's not that long from what I've been told. 35-40 hours for the main quest, of course there's all the typical DQ extras like the casino etc. Now DQ7, that was long. I spent 80hours and didn't even brush on half the stuff you can do.
i hope BB had it for 40 or Eb has trade 3 games in get it free
I 2nd that. I need a deal, and I don't want to have to wait for it!

The game is great so far... make sure you pick it up when it comes out on the 15th!

My copy is coming priority so I should have it by Friday. I'll have a review of it before launch as well. From the demo, though, it seems like old school gaming at its finest.
Cool, so it does come in a Star Ocean style box?
The 3rd picture shows an outer box and the case. So, I would assume so. :D

also posted this in the fighter thread, but I have to know: how's the FFXII demo? :)

I'll post more information on FF XII when I can. All I'll say is there is two modes to start from, an active battle mode and another more story oriented mode. I can't really divulge in depth details but I will put some pictures eventually. Right now I'm trying my hardest to get through the game so I can get my review ready.

It's a really awesome game and I pass on sleep just to play. I wish I could say more... The only thing I regret is once the game is out I won't be able to experience the great things like the casual/hardcore gamers experience...(going to the store anxiously awaiting a copy, then playing through it til' the end)... by the time you guys are doing that I'll be long done...

=(

Hey who knows what comes with the limited edition of the guide? It says on Amazon that it will come with artwork, a poster, and "other content". A poster and some artwork aren't worth an extra $15 to me but what is the "other content"?

EGM said 60 hours for a "casual gamer" and tons more for side-quests, mini-games, etc. That is one long-ass game!

This may seem like a really dumb question, but i'm going to ask it anyhow. Do you have to have played recent or past Dragon Warrior games to understand DQ VIII's story and such? It's not like a direct sequel of any kind is it?

I ask because the last Dragon Warrior game I played was II and that was many, many moons ago. I've preordered so I'll be getting it anyway, but I'd like to know because for me a good and understandable story is essential to an RPG, otherwise I can't find the will to finish one.

I don't think so, this is like Final Fantasy so each game is semi-related, but not so much that you need to have played previous versions. Plus, I think they'd be smart to know that VII wasn't very successful here. I would like to see them re-release VII for the PS2 not updated or anything, just rereleased so that it can be played by all the people who missed out on it 4 years ago.

Exactly. The game does have a few nods to it's past heritage but by no means do you need to play the prequels to get the story. Things may be a little quicker for you if you have played Dragon Warrior/ Quest games in the past but it's not needed. It is an all new story.

man, next week is all about gaming........ Dragon Quest VIII , Mario kart DS, Magna Carta and Aeon Flux...........all come out.....

i cant wait...too bad pesky work gets in the way of my enjoyment...i should make like a japanese man and cut out of work for a few days on sick leave ;)

if i wasnt so responsible, and i didnt want to use my vacation time to go someplace warm this winter, i would take a few days now just to relax and play and relax and play and probably sleep

I never got into the series, this one does spark my interest however. Maybe it's the fact I'm a sucker for cell shaded types, maybe it's the colorful graphics, or maybe the commercials suceeded, not really sure. Maybe it's just the hype.

I'm more of an action game type, but I loved Lunar SSS, I'm not much into Final Fantasy, but like every other n00b, I liked 7 and enjoy X-2. I really want to try this out though. Maybe it's just the memories of the little slime from Dragon Warrior on NES. :)

The TV commercial has thoroughly put me off to the game, it's on every 5 minutes (switching channels)! That and I just don't feel like I have the time for another level up-athon RPG (Nocturne and Disgaea have enough dust as it is)...
They all come in sleeves. The sleeve is on top and the manual is outside of the case, the manual for FFXII's demo disc is inside. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v112/Redeema/DQVIII.jpg that's the slip cover, the gase and the manual all there. I should have taken a picture of the FFXII demo, but my battery ran out. Holiday caused my copy to show up on Saturday.
where'd the slime come from???

its probally the controller.. i would never pay 40 for it

i hope i can dump the FF12 demo on ebay for 10-20 bucks to bring the DQ game down to 30-40

I am still curious why they decided to change the North American name to Dragon Quest. I guess they figured it was one less localization change to keep track of and likely most people playing PS2 haven't even heard of Dragon Warrior. ;)

The first game is still one of my all time favorite RPGs. I really enjoyed that it was just me as the hero, learning all the magic and using all the items. Now it has gotten to the point where you have so many party members, you have to rotate through them and choose who to fight with.

This series is infamous for the large amount of storyline breaking leveling sessions. I am jealous of anyone who has that time to waste. I have so many games now and so little time that I prefer RPGs that level me up appropriately as I progress through the story. I remember when I first played FF7, I thought it was lame that you didn't need to level up outside of the main storyline, but now that is exactly how I want games to be. Any forced leveling seems archaic and really turns me off.

I received two copies of the demo and today I finally got my slime keychains (yay!). Unlike my other demo discs, this is one demo I will crack open and play through even though I don't plan on ever owning the game.

Nope, too small and light colored to be the controller. It's most likely one of the plushes that's sold in Japan and was given out at E3...

Probably just to give the series a fresh start and get it back in synch with it's Japanese roots, plus Squeenix probably didn't have enough fun with the whole FF2/4 & 3/6 thing...

The series has always been known as DQ in Japan, but that name is copyrighted in the US. Since the copyright recently expired, Square enix got the name and decide to use it. Besides now they can use the t in quest as a sword :)

I usually don't get too invovled in the more standard RPG's that are full with menus and random battle encounters. Do you think the casual RPG'er could get into this?

woo im getting it tomorrow for 30 bucks after resell or cheaper

going to get it at Best buy using BBB and hopefully i can use the 5 buck off coupon. if so that would knocked it down to 45 and i just sold the FF12 demo on ebay for 20 bucks (was really shocked there) so that knocks it down to 25 bucks (30 if the coupon wont work) WOOOO

Thats a pretty good deal... I wouldnt think to sell the demo before I got the game.

That's because you're honest. Selling the demo before you have it in hand is against Ebay rules and is considered fraud.

Slidecage: In the future, please refrain from doing that.
