-The opening FMV is a freaking 17 minutes one. You can't skip it, nor any other FMV in the game.
-It seems that the save points are scarce. (In other words, no two-three save points in every dungeon like FFX)
-If you die, there is a continue feature like in Kingdom Hearts.
-FFXII is finally 100% finished.
-There is also a mini-game. (Probably, the FFT-styled game)

If there is a continue then less save points arent that bad.

FFT as in Final Fantasy Tactics?

17 minute opening, no problem. I've played Xenosaga, I know how it feels! Hopefully FF will let you pause during those. Length doesn't bother me, I enjoy story, even if it is long.
 
It's not too bad. I personally don't mind FMV's at all (they're fun to watch, and they unwrap the story quicker and better).

Having played the demo, I think Squeenix designed this intentionally.

It's like hanging around someone fatter than you in order to look sexay by comparison; making the FMVs and save spots fucking awful will distract from the dipshit idea of implementing what amounts to little more than the FFXI battle system in an offline RPG.
 
I'm not a big fan of the non-skipable FMVs. But then again, how many of us actually have the time to play an RPG more than once? Seriously - most of us have more games than we can even begin to play. So this, in my opinion, is not that big of an issue.

Furthermore, if you do play the game a second time, hopefully you are doing it because you actually enjoy the game and wouldn't mind watching them again.

Although the danger of having to watch the same FMV before a boss fight you keep dying at comes to mind and scares the crap out of me.

With regards to the save points, I personally think it'll up the challenge - forcing me to pay more attention to each action and make better preparations before I leave a town. Besides, in how many RPGs have you died during a non-boss fight?

It's like the argument of DMC3's save feature - some love it and some hate it. No decision will ever make 100% of the people happy. Lest, of course, they have some option where you can switch between "more or less save points."

I understand how you feel.

To tell the truth, I haven't played a Final Fantasy since IX. IX and before were (primarily) turn-based and simple. Their Action bar loads, I choose an action, and it switches to the next guy. In order to prevent this from getting boring, the characters move in place a bit, but no way do they move around.

As I played the FFXII demo (I've never played X, but plan to soon now that I have a damn PS2), I felt somewhat cheated. I could see the monsters before I attacked them. Upon confrontation the Attack menu popped up in the corner and nothing more. It was as if XII was simply an RPG with the menu trying to cover up. What saddened me the most about this "no random battles" was how easy I could avoid the monsters. I don't feel like battling? Okay I'll just run this way instead! But what's this? Because I didn't feel like leveling I lost to the boss? OOPS!

It's not necessarily as if the game is bad. I did, to an extent, enjoy playing it. The dungeons are made nicely and the crispness of the final Final Fantasy on the PS2 (lest SquareEnix decides to pull something out of their pants). Really, I do hope something is done about this, but that hope will lose itself in the vat of hopes that have been made about this game.
 
didn't they have a different battle system before the current one? anyone know what it was supposed to be like?

"no random battles" well some people comlained always about the fact, that FF had random battles in where you did not see your opponent.
Personally, i don't really care. I enjoy it eighter way.
What i really liked about the demo, was the bar which showed you how far the boss was from his death.
But i hardly could judge the game just from playing two stages. SO far it looked ok and i hope it has a good story.
 
Scarce save points suck. It basically means that I have to have 2-3 hours set aside to play, since I don't know when I'll be able to stop. Which means I can only play on Sat and Sun, sometimes. I want to be able to just turn it on and play for 30 mins or so. :(

I don't really like the bar. In fact it makes FFXII more like FFXI and MMORPG's.

I dont mind cutscenes...hell, I even have favorites (Anything from Grandia 2).

Here's where I would have a problem though. Say you get to the boss, you see a neat 3-10 minute video explaining how he will crush/annhilate/eat you, and then fight him...and you lose. *IF* they replay that video, and do not make it skipable the multiple times you may need to fight that boss, THEN i'll be pissy.

I like watching em once but not 50 times because they are right before a boss like a certain one in FF VIII that i would like to forget

I understand that part.

I guess I was just jumping more on the complaints along "Oh no I'm not playing a game I am playing a movie!"

A video player-esque "fast forward/rewind" feature would be a godsend.
 
Wouldn't it be safe to assume that if it has a continue feature, that means if you die in a fight & continue it just starts the fight over. As in, no repeated cutscene, just restart the actual fight?

I don't see these as big issues anyway. FFX didn't let you skip cutscenes (I remember one vividly in the mountain area before a Seymore fight...) and it didn't kill the game. And scarce save points? Hell, DQVIII had beyond "scarce" save points and it was still the best game I played last year.

I'm more apprehensive about the combat, personally. I will say that after playing the "wait" mode on the demo (the beach section), I thought that version of the combat was MUCH better than the other. I'll definitely be choosing that option. Honestly, I don't mind the change so much in this one - but I will say that I hope FFXIII is a return to turn-based combat. I don't want the series to permenantly go real-time.
 
Legend of Dragoon made me love some nicely done cut scenes. If a cutscene can truly transport me to another land, I'm hooked. It's what makes a 100 hour game a true experience of a lifetime.
 
I may have to rent this game, if only to see how a legend dies.


I absolutely love FF games, loved 1,2,3 (us designation), but after that it just kinda petered out. 10 was ok and 10-2 was pretty sweet. But, with 12 playing like a MOG, I just can't get into it. I've played too damn many MOGs and one without social interaction just wont be fun to me. There's a good chance imho that 12 is going to kill this series, if not in sales, in fun.
 
Could this be the Final Fantasy??????? Nah, this is like Mario or Grand Theft Auto now. Making a Final Fantasy game is like making a money tree. The question is, does Nintendo water the tree with Evian or do the continue pissing on it?

The Demo is :hot: , I love it I love the new direction XII is going and it plays a lot like FFXI, this is a good thing. RPGames need a new fresh direction and the demo shows us that FFXII demo showed me that it is moving in the right direction. I am not a fan of the FFT/Vagrant Story style (just my taste) but the gameplay is smooth.

I just thought the demo was ok. I like Dragon Quest VIII more. I think I'm hooked on it. First RPG I have really been pulled into in a long time.
 
I couldn't stand the demo. I think the new battle system is awkward and dull. I was hoping that it would be more like FF X-2, which IMO had an incredible battle system.

XI was meh at best...
 
So let me get this straight -

Xenosaga has a straightforward battle system and long cutscenes - and it sells great. So for the second one they shorten the cutscenes and muckup the battle system.

Final Fantasy X has multiple save points and skippable short FMVs - and it sells great. So they make the cutscenes long and unskippable, and cut down on save points.

Who are the ad wizards who came up with this?

Looks like with Grandia III, Tales of Legendia, and Phatasy Star Universe, people will have alot more options this time around. Maybe Xenosaga and FFX sold so well because they were they only quality next gen RPG's on the market. The only other games at the time, if my memory serves me right, were Wild Arms 3, Legend of Legaia 2, and Suikoden III.

I agree. I thought that bringing Dragon Quest VIII over to the US was a somewhat big move (though I expected a DQ game WOULD come over some time), though it should have come earlier.

Now that a variety of RPGs are coming out, we'll finally be able to step out of the SquareEnix fanbox and try something new.

Grandia III and Tales of Legendia should really kick ass.

That's true. Despite major changes, I'll still play this. Maybe even buy it at full price if needed.

Um what exactly did you enjoy, because i found it tedious. They took out the whole story element, and that's what makes FF good....

I don't think there was story supposed to be in the demo... at all. It was just a gameplay demo.

So far the story for FFXII doesn't seem too bad. I like how they're (it seems, at least) planning to insert some political dilemmas into the storyline. It also seems like you're thrust in the middle of a giant war, which should make things cool (kinda like FFIX I guess, but that's a bit different).

They need to inject some freshness - maybe this time they can do a story about an ordinary peasant boy who turns out to be the destined savior of the universe.

Alot of misunderstandings that force you to fight allies until they join your team would also be a nice touch.
