Sony Says New PlayStation to Be on Display at E3 (Reuters)

So much for the ten year life cycle. I'm gonna sit out all the next gen systems until the prices start to fall. I've got so many games for my PS2, GC, and Xbox. I can play them for the next couple of years while waiting for the price wars to start.

The tactic seems to be to drop hints that will make M$ show their cards first and then steal their thunder moments afterwards wih a more shocking display, It's the same tactic they used on the Dreamcast. But they need a far more impressive showing, if they go into it talking a load of internet stuff like trying to take on Live they arnt going to see as much interest as they expect.

People want to see GAMES and or something that shows potential for great games and both companies need to push this aspect.

The cool thing from the whole announcement to me was this though:

Sony Computer Entertainment, the conglomerate's game unit, meanwhile showed off a software title called "Talkman" which allows the user to speak into a microphone in one language which the application then translates into another language.

now I can translate the foreign language channels for fun when theres nothing to watch!

well, if the system is gonna be 500+ dollars like i heard, there'll be no way in hell I'll pick up the PS3. Or at least until it gets into the 300 range.

I can't believe that Sony is so stupid as to announce that now. After all the talk of the many many years left of support for the PS2, they jump the gun and announce this. Sure, the PS1 still sees support, but as soon as the focus shifts to a new system, people stop buying them, comanies stop developing games for the older hardware... they're hastening the deal of the product that just before E3 they were saying they were going to support for the long haul.

I'm still wondering how the "Cell" will compare to the reportedly G5/PowerPC packing Nintendo Revolution.

maybe ps3 will not have the simple but dreadful DRE's I would like to see the ps3 with a hard drive or at least solid state memory bulit in so We do not have to worry about how much space is free (on our memory cards) when playing a game.

Actually, the PS1 outsold the Xbox for quite some time so I'm not so sure this is truly a "stupid" move.

Yeah but by that time, the PS1 was what? $100 if that much. Against a $300 box, that's not much comparison. Software support for the PS1 went down the tubes pretty fast, which is a more important aspect IMO.

True daphatty, but it's support base dried up rather quickly. The PS1 outselling the Xbox for quite some time was more based on the existing software library than the games that were coming out.

I mean, what good does it do Sony to say this now? I mean, wouldn't they be better served announcing that at the begining of Q1 2005 instead of right now, so that they could have another Q4 free of the impending spectre of the PS3?

I really don't see the reasoning behind the announcement.

I remember reading that Sony is trying to implement distributed computing...I don't know how well that would fare though.

You have to consider the lifespan of the PSone and tentative PStwo on the global scale. We here in north America are quite affluent compared to most of the world. From the global perspective the PSone is still a good business as it can be offered at an affordable price into the lesser markets and in many cases the games do not have to be localized as a major portion of the population has a working knowledge of a European langage based on who was running the joint before it became independent.

The PStwo or whatever they call it should enjoy similar popularity as a secondary business.

Much of what they've claimed cannot be applied to video games. It would be a development nightmare and on top of that would introduce all sorts of latency issues. It's one thing to pull a bunch of Cell chips in other household equipment into a large non-interactive computing task but how often does the average consumer have such a task and how does this apply to something that needs five 9s predictability in its behavior? This would promise to make the testing stage of video game development as bad or worse than the never really completed testing for PC games.

My opinion is Sony got ahead of its self. We have already heard the delay of this cell chip and the final development kits havent even been released for the PSP. They are expecting a march release with no final development kits out to publishers? Sony itself isnt that great of developer to carry the system at launch.

I think the same thing has happened to them in the PS3 they talked crap and everyone bought it. Now when it comes time to shine they have nothing to produce. In my opinion we are seeing the begining of the end for sony. And if its not the end its the begining of the decline.

Somehow I don't see the PS3 competing against a 3x 3.5GHz G5, 500Mhz ATI card in a way that leaves gamers going "Wow, it's that much better, PS3 kicks Xenon's butt!".

I think we're at a brick wall now where graphics will not move machines. Casual users cannot tell which is the best of the three machines now. They all say "Xbox" because that's what every game magazine says but honestly, I don't see a gigantic difference on games. Probably because the PS2 is the lead console for so many games and I haven't played Ubisofts games designed for the Xbox on the GCN or PS2. But rarely do I ever think "Wow, that looks like a PS2, or GCN or Xbox game." not like how we used to be able to tell the difference between an N64 and PSone game.

If it comes down to online experience? Xbox Live has truly established itself as the best in the business. M$ did it up right. Online, real time voice translation? LOL Yeah, right, I'm sure it will bring the world closer. Not this generation Sony. I think they're up against a much more polished and sophisticated competitor this time. I don't think they're going to get away with the same power claims they did in overhyping the PS3.

Thank God for Microsoft. I don't think I could take another year of "PS3 is a supercomputer. Japan has forbidden its export because it could power weapons programs for rogue state missile designs. PS3 will be the center of everyone's universe allowing you to download movies, music, TV shows and network the entire home." I wish I could list the BS we heard in 1999-2000 about all the things the PS2 would do and still... in 2004 STILL isn't doing.
