CheapyD told me I should post this over here, but I'm auctioning off the decision of how to destroy a copy of Jack Thompson's book, "Out of Harm's Way", which he foolishly signed, and get a copy of the process on video. I couldn't include this in the auction description due to the risk of the auction being pulled, but I'm donating the procedes to the Get-Well-Gamers Foundation. Any questions about the auction feel free to send them my way. Thanks.

You can find the auction here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7609543430

Digg it! http://www.digg.com/gaming/Signed_Jack_Thompson_Book_to_Be_Destroyed_for_Charity

I've also submitted links to fark.com and collegehumor. I have someone else informing joystiq, ctrl-alt-del, vgcats, and penny-arcade. I also let a 1up mod know too, and will be contacting them further. I have a lot more sites to send to as well, but thats gonna happen tomorrow, I'm tired.

I've posted a few links on a few forums like Allakhazam to try and drum up some more interest. You might wanna check with RedvsBlue as well.

Can you give me some links? I'd love to see how its doing and thank anyone who may bid over there.

I'd think this sort of thing could hit Penny-Arcade and the like within the week if we play our cards right.

I WILL STAND AT CORNERS. NAKED. SCREAMING.

Even though that is what I always do, so I'm not actually going to help.

Already being worked on my friend, already being worked on :bouncy:

That picture with the games next to the book is great. I'm sure this is going to go well and I can't wait to see what the winner picks, good luck.

please excuse the double post in the description - ebay is full of assholes who won't let me edit it because "its been bid on"

as I was canceling the auction ebay pulled it for mentioning cd-r and calling them bootlegs, new url tomorrow.

Just wanted to let you know that I shot this off to cnn.com. Hey if they can post a story about the Madonna on a slice of toast being sold on ebay, why not this?

Good luck!

I referred them to this thread for the background info and the link to ebay for the auction. Maybe Cheapy should put this on the front paget too?

All credit goes to you, you are doing a good thing here!

So long as ebay doesn't turn int oa dick again and pull the auction, Cheapy is putting it on the front page tomorrow.

but destruction is soo violent! You're just proving his point. how many more books must suffer because of what GTA has taught the children? :(

(j.k. Visc's auction should be on the CAG front page)

I threw a bid in, good luck.

Edit:
Oh, my bid is 66.60 if anyone feels like tossing a bid without worry of being the highest bidder, but wants to make a gesture.

Now that this thread is on the grid, you might do well to remove that personal information from the other massive thread, you never know how much JT will get obsessed with tracking you down.
is droppin' a deuce on it deemed as sfw?
from ze auction
The only exceptions to this are nothing involving genitalia, bodily functions, fluids, wastes, and I will not make anyone or animal consume it.

Don't drop it from a Cessna. Some old Jew might be hobbling around on a cane and find it near the entrance to a cave.

We all know what happened last time...

Wait a couple days and if the response isn't that huge yet, shoot an e-mail over to Thompson saying you're a concerned parent and saw the auction on eBay. Before you know it he'll have alerted the media, called press conferences, you name it. Let him do all the dirty work for your publicity.
Details, please!
He called just before 8am, unfortuneately I wan't able to get to the phone and my mother answered. Apparantly he's threatening to sue if the auction isn't pulled for fraud and defamation or something. Then called right back asking if we had his number "so our lawyer could contact him".

It seems he heard about the auction through Shrike's link from the other thread, http://arstechnica.com/journals/thumbs.ars/2006/4/12/3559

Glad to see that gamers finally admit they're in the Book Burners Club with Hitler. The hypocrisy of people who claim the First Amendment protects the marketing and sale of Mature-rated games like GTA to kids and then who propose to destroy a book to prove their fabulous freedom of expression credentials is hilarious.

What's next, openly doing drugs on gamers' webcams to prove again Harvard's findings last week that gamers are more likely to consume illegal drugs? Duh.

But thanks for the corroboration that the only real censors in this fight are the pixelante thug gamers.

Jack Thompson

God, what an overreacter

He is an overreacter, but I agree with Cheapy. I don't ever think it's a good idea to begin destroying books just because you disagree with the subject. I understand that the proceeds are going to charity, but you could have put something else up for auction that made the same point without destruction of a book. As I said in the other thread, I just think this plays right into his hands and will end up backfiring on you.

What possible backfire will it have? He's not trying to prove a point, he's trying to raise money. Since it already has bids, he has completed his goal.

Now my own family is yelling at me to cancel the damn auction. Turns out Thompson sent me 5 emails as well, with the same message, to have my attorney contact him regarding the procurement of the autograph. I don't want to cave, but I don't want relatives on my back - thoughts?

Find out if it's really defamation of character. Where Javery? If it's not illegal, then he's just trying to scare you. If he was really going to sue you, he wouldn't be asking for you to have a lawyer call him, he'd be calling you with his.

wait, is that just a post it note attached to the book with his autograph? Also, you should post about the emails received from him on your ebay listing, im sure itd generate more publicity. Reminds me of the time that someone here sold a car with a missle made of those peace (anti war) yellow ribbons on top of his car. A buncha people left comments and it just made more people interested in it. It was a pos car that sold for quite a bit. I remember this cuz now he took a pic of the auction listing and hung it in the art gallery.

I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice...but,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libel

In English and American law, and systems based on them, libel and slander are two forms of defamation (or defamation of character), which is the tort or delict of publishing (meaning to a third party) a false statement that negatively affects someone's reputation. "Defamation" is the term generally used internationally, and is accordingly used in this article where it is not necessary to distinguish between "libel" and "slander".

It does not appear that you have published any false statements (or even any negative statements) about JT.

No real update with the exception that the accusation appears to be more on fraud than anything else. Specifically, the means of which I got the autograph. I'm still weighing my options at this point so nothing else to report really for now.

you own the book.. what you do with it is your own business... he can't sue you for destroying the book..

as for fraud.. how could they get you on that.. its signed by jack thompson.. he had to have done book signings in the last couple of months.. and you say in your auction that it was a gift.. don't cave.. damn the man save the empire.

in current discussion with a lawyer friend from NY. He can't represent me, but is still trying to help if he can.
