supposed to be absolutely free.

For a limited time, get a fee-waived membership to National Car Rental's Emerald Club. As a member, you can get some perks such as bypassing the normal line by using the Emerald Club Aisle for quicker service. As far as we can tell, there are no apparent costs associated with this deal. To keep your membership, you may just need to make 1 rental during a calendar year every year.

Oooh, nice program. This may be right up my alley when it comes to rentals next year when I hit 25 and don't have to worry about paying extra for being "underage".

In the meantime, just to supplement this thread, Enterprise Rent-a-Car has links all around its website to sign up and receive coupons. It's not necessarily the best but, if you need to rent a car for a weekend for whatever reason, it's entirely worth it. Like most of the recent ads have been getting across to more people, rentals are half-price from Friday to Sunday on their vehicles and, for around $15 to $20 a day, it's very feasible if you just need to get up and get away for a bit. Just be careful to also allot money towards GAS and TAXES, as well as any additional INSURANCE CHARGES you wish to incur. Just because it looks like it'll be around $40 to $60 for a weekend usually means that it's closer to around $60 to $90, depending!

Happy rentals!

Damn Enterprise pissed me off, at least our local one. They told me to rent a car I would need my proof of insurance, a paystub, $200 cashiers check deposit (no CC)! What the hell... A PAYSTUB! A little hard to produce when you are self employed!!! Why do I need proof of insurance if I'm getting the ins when I rent the car??? Now the $200 deposit I can understand but a cashiers check?? How about cash!! fuck them!

Whoa. I've rented from Enterprise in NY, PA, OH, and IN so far and I've never had to jump through hoops like that. Your local one seems to be filled with some insanity! For almost all of my rentals I just had to tell them who my insurance provider was when I waived their insurance, give them a credit card number for billing upon return (no charge upfront), and give them my local address just for contact purposes (quality survey over the phone afterwards, contact for pickup, etc.).

But a paystub? $200 cashiers check deposit? Proof of insurance even though you're getting their own? Honestly, if they're still doing that I'd see if I can contact corporate to complain. There's a healthy amount of BS going on there.
