Does the Sega Saturn play Sega Cd software?

The reason for my question....I saw a Sega Saturn system on ebay and the seller had Sega Cd software in the pic which were part of the auction. Unless he does not know what he is selling, I began to think Sega Cd's are playable on the Saturn. Thanks in advance!!!

I never bought into the Saturn but did purchase the Dreamcast. The Saturn system never seemed all that great...especially at $400.00 upon it's initial release.

Thanks....did not think so but since I never had a Saturn system I had to find out. Would love to play Willy Beamish again. Could not stand the long load times on the Sega CD.

yes rc it does,i hate to say it but all these ppl are INCORRECT the sega saturn DOES play sega cd games,,,and it gets better,sega cd games had NO COPY PROTECTION,so the sega saturn will play backup copies of the sega cd disks ,,NO MOD NEEDED,,,I HAVE A SEGA SEGA SATURN

ON ANOTHER NOTE THE SEGA SATURN IS THE MOST RELIABLE CD BASED CONSOLE I HAVE EVER SEEN...MINE STILL WORKS GREAT,didnt see the date on your post but if you can get that saturn with games still,,,DO IT NOW AND PLAY ALL THOSE KICK ASS SEGA CD GAMES,,my favorites are corpse killer,and make my video INXS version

Old thread or not, you're 100% inaccurate. The Saturn does NOT play SegaCD games.

Video doesnt work, but my old Saturn was not able to play every single SEGA CD disc, but some of them actually did work on my Saturn surprisingly. But not all of them worked on my Saturn, so I am not sure if you can say they all do work.
 
tru i didnt think of that,i only have a few sega cd games,but the ones i have all work just fine,,,you make a good point,maybe someone should make a sega cd to saturn compatiblity list,,hmmmmmmmmm

I'm almost starting to wonder if they're talking about not "real" SegaCD games, but CD+G stuff like karaoke discs - the SegaCD and Saturn, as well as PCs and lots of other machines would play those.

I have a Saturn too, and damn, I wish there was more games for it. They should have incorporated the Sega CD into it, and may be they would have done a little bit better for Saturn release.
 
I've seen vids of swap tricking the Saturn to play Sega CD games, never tried it myself but the vids looked pretty convincing. Someone get crackin' on this, I'm so lazy.

Whatever vids of "swap tricking" you saw were fake. It's not possible. There is no Sega CD emulator hidden in the Saturn.
 
Yeah, it's not even near the same hardware and stuff. For a second I was thinking, "Really????" Like maybe it's one of those wierd things, and then I snapped back into reality.
 
The Saturn does not and has never played Sega CD games. It would have been impossible at that time to emulate the combination of hardware that a Genesis and a Sega CD unit had.

Genesis cartridge compatibility was considered but rejected, they kept the cartridge slot for memory cards.
 
Wow, I almost bought into this as well. Seems like Sega dropped the ball on releasing a $399 console that doesn't have backwards compatibility. I still remember thinking that the back slot was a 32x cartridge slot when I first saw it in stores. Too bad.

Well, really, not too many systems back then had BC, but it would have been cool. Anyone rememver the Satcast april fools??
 
I wouldn't say it was impossible as an emulation task but there wasn't much to be gained for Sega in making it run Sega CD software.

I'd say its impossible on the Saturn hardware, they'd have had to design it to do that in the first place. That certainly wouldn't have been worth the cost.
 
The Saturn can play music CDs true, but it cannot play Sega CD's. My guess is that if you put a Sega CD disk in there, it is an unlikely possibility you could access some of the game music, but in no way could the game be played.

Some Sega CD (as well as old PC, Playstation, etc) games used Redbook audio (the proper name for "normal" CD audio, like what you would get on an album CD), so yes, any such audio would play on the Saturn, through the CD audio player.

Similar to how a ps3 can "play" 360 games, you just go to videos and you can watch some scenes.
