Toby Gard, one of the pair credited for the creation of Lara Croft and Tomb Raider, has joined Crystal Dynamics as a Senior Designer for the next title in the Tomb Raider franchise. This will be the first Tomb Raider that Gard has contributed to since the original version in the mid 90s.
The franchise has been run into the ground so far...I think it may be beyond redemption in the public's eyes.
I don't think it will ever be as big as it was outside it's hardcore fanbase, but we will have to see.

I don't think it can be saved. THe original game wasn't that good once you get past the T&A hype. Compared to many other classics it hasn't aged well at all. IF you created an exact clone except for substituting a generic male character it becomes inseparable from numerous other games like it. What you had was a PR sensation, not a gameplay sensation.

The real reason why the original was so successful was the fact that was, quite possibly, the first third-person adventure game, and allowed people to really feel like they're raiding tombs. That's it.

I say screw the whole story board thing and just make it a free roaming adventure game, where you hear about artifacts, collect them, sell them, and buy equipment, bigger mansions, etc. They would have to completely remake the game, changing controls, level lay out, gameplay, etc.

My recommendation is making it on the next generation systems so the franchise is reborn, and once again demonstrates the power of the system it's on.

Yeah, i couldn't believe that gaming press were calling it Sony's answer to Mario 64 back then. Give me a break. the first one was a decent game with awful controls.

What they really need to do is completely revamp the controls and the gameplay so it doesn't seem so ancient.

Boy, not a lot of love for Lara here. I was at college when a classmate told me about Tomb Raider on his PSX. I was more interested in Triple Play '97, since I've always been a BIG sports game guy. But Tomb Raider was something special. Video segments that were short and to the point, interesting puzzles that were fun to complete, and an entirely new way to game.

Granted, the puzzles and things seemed to get rediculously hard in later games. And the stories didn't seem to give enough oomph to make me fight through those levels. But the game has been an inspiration to MANY game programmers, developers, and fans.

Personally, I'd love to see a new game with great graphics and a story that can hold your interest. I think Lara has a bit more she could give to us all. ;)

They should wait 10 years or so before doing Tomb Raider again. By then, the concept will seem fresh again.

I never understood what people saw in this game - I could only get through a few levels on the first game for the PS1. The controls were god-awful, graphics were blocky and choppy, and the game was just boring.

That is still the only version that I own. And the first is still considered to be the best? Wow!
