I need to know some good RPGs for the Sega Genesis

XboxMaster

CAGiversary!
Hey, I just modded my Xbox, and I put the Genesis emulator and 150 roms for it on there. I sat down and tried to play some, I just skipped around and tried the ones that sounded cool. Most of them have been failures, and I don't know which ones are RPGs. So, could you tell me the best or some of the best RPGs for the Genesis?

I enjoyed the Phantasy Star series (Especially number four). Landstalker is easily my favorite Genesis game of all time. And the Shining Force series.

And Light Crusader is okay too.

Don't forget :

- Shadowrun
- Crusader of Centy -- very Zelda like
- Beyond Oasis
- Traysia
- Warsong

Those are my favorite Genesis RPG

Shadowrun and Beyond Oasis are musts. :)

King's Bounty is decent fun for the few hours it lasts.

I am also biting my tongue to not make a comment....

Didnt work... You do own all of the original carts that you have roms for, correct? :D

I hope when you grow up people come to where you work and steal whatever you've been working on.

Of course, I guess in the long run managers of fast food restaurants don't care if a few extra hamburgers get stolen.

Well it doesn't matter anymore, cuz they obviously don't make anymore Sega Genesis carts (unless I'm terribly mistaken), so the ppl who created them have already been paid. :)
Oh yep, I also own all of my GBA roms and SNES roms. (sarcasm)
I'm more concerned about the GBA roms there. Those are still in production, and people still deserve to be paid for those. Notice, I didn't start barking until that specific comment was made.

Go with Phantasy Star 2 and 4 (3 is crap)
Shining Force 1 is all right...but SF2 is fantastic
Beyond Oasis, as someone else said, is a great ARPG.
Also, look into Landstalker if you get the chance.
And maybe Shining in the Darkness...it was a great game, but it may irritate you to know that there's only one (large) dungeon and one town for the entire game.

shining in darkness is little more than a 3-D pen and pencil maze simulator-- the RPG trappings are just window dressing.

Along with sonic and phantasystar 3,I bought it with my genesis. If I had had more games, I probably wouldn't have ever finished it.

As it stands,it being the prequel to shining force firmly steered me away from that series until very recently-- tragic considering the game interfaces have little in common and the later games in the series are considered masterpieces.

I was just kidding about the GBA roms, I don't have any. All I got are on my Xbox, and those are SNES, SG, and a few old arcade games.

Jsweeny just STFU I'm sure you've "STOLEN" some music off the net before. And what are you going to do preach him to death just get a life man .He can do what he wants and your gayass whining ain't ganna change his mind

Aw, isn't that cute. He's angry and he's started swearing. What a shock.

When you are capable of having a reasonable discussion without resorting to obscenity, then maybe I'll start to listen.
I was just kidding about the GBA roms, I don't have any. All I got are on my Xbox, and those are SNES, SG, and a few old arcade games.
Well, that is not nearly so bad. It's still somewhat wrong, but it's very difficult to make a plausible argument for who it hurts. Sure, some companies do make anthology releases, but most don't. Unfortunately thier great games just fade into obsolesence... and that's just tragic.

Well, it's not like Secret of Mana is gonna be a most played, that's because it's too old, now if EVERYONE started gaming when it was realeased then maybe it would be played alot. So, of course old games are gonna fade away.

Ok my suggestion: Gunstar Heroes, great game for two players, like metal slug and Contra mixed together, one of Treasure's early games. I really don't see why some people get upset with emulated games, I personally don't even want to know how much I have spent on Videogames alone in the 17 years I have been buying them. I can see why it hurts some consoles though like the Dreamcast, man that was a bootleggers dream come true. I didn't start downloading games until I found out Sega gave up on the system, until then I was supporting their products and software. Regardless of whether you're a Doctor or a Manager at a burger joint its hard to resist free games. The old systems like SNES, Genesis, Turbo Graphix, and Sega Saturn are not around anymore so I really don't see why its wrong to download those roms. I can see why some people are not down with bootlegging games that have just come out or coming out. The thing is if your a grown-ass man, you can do whatever the hell you feel like doing, its up to you no matter what anyone else tells you that is wrong. You know the consequences by now I'm sure, so no need to lecture.

Jsweeny your just some fat shit virgin with no friends thats gets a joy out of criticizing people on a damn GAMING forum . Just get a life already.

Aw, isn't it cute. Now he is just angry, now he's formed a vendetta! This thread was dead for 2 days, and he resurrected for the sole purpose of taking a shot at me!

Awww.

if you like zelda, then you should like Landstalker on the genny.

Landstalker=Precurser to Alundra on the ps1. a true classic and my favorite game on the ps1.

ive been lookin for a rpg but i cant remember the name, the only thing i can really remember is that moon dust is a revival item, and u could take vehicles on the world map, and when u got into battles the vehicles had weapons u could use

I second (third?) Landstalker- I had a copy once, but the battery was dead, so I returned it. To this day, I actually regret that, because the Genesis games dissappeared from the local shops without me finding another copy. I've love to really play that one.

Um, dude? You're, uh, kinda doing the same thing. Maybe you should, y'know, let it go.

DuelLayS, you rule. TiKi2, get a fucking life and quit crying because someone though having GBA roms is wrong (it is).

I say find the Shining series, and Shadowrun. RPGs weren't as abundant on the genny as they were on the snes, so there aren't many to pick from, but the ones that exist are pretty great.

5 1/2 years later, Shadowrun is still amazing btw.

EDIT: just realized this isn't my fault. This thread is from two-thousand-fucking-four.

Anyway, I think I'm in the minority, but I thought Sword of Vermilion was pretty good. Traditional, but not bland.

Not that I advocate emulation, because I do not. I am a hardcore retro-gamer and leave originals to their native devices. But seing how this is such a good question, here's my list. It is not complete, I know this much, but perhaps some of you would care to add some extra ones on your own.

...Story-wise and Writing-wise, one would assume at first glance it is an utter cliche. But this is, after all, a pioneering game. The graphics are outstanding, for the time of its release, and the gameplay itself fills in where the lack of writing fails to grab you. I had lots of fun when I played this game. It does exactly what you'd expect an RPG to do: Give you a fantastic role and immerse you as such in a completely different world. (Once more, I want to point out that the game "lacks" writing, something not nescessarily synonymous with "bad" writing).

P.S.> Want to know bad writing for the sake of wrapping it up (Not to speak of its over-simplification for the lesser mind)? Try "Sword of Mana" for the gameboy advance... Talk about potential being thrown down the sewer. The game makes the meaning of Great Graphics antonymous with Ghastly Literature.
EDIT: just realized this isn't my fault. This thread is from two-thousand-fucking-four.
Just noticed that too. I always wonder how that happens... well, I'm enjoying it anyway- the only RPG I ever got for my Genesis is Crusader of Centy, so having suggestions (aside from Landstalker and Beyond Oasis) is really nice. (I didn't even know Centy was an RPG when I bought it, I was pretty stoked when I figured that out.)

I think Ys I+II and III are on genesis, see # 34 & 35 in the list above.

I played Ys I+II on TG16 via virtual console and it was prolly one of the greatest RPGs I ever played in my life,

I havent played Ys III but I currently own the PC remake, Oath in Felghana, which I hear is amazing.

Well, since this thread (from before I joined CAG) was brought back up, I'll just mention my favorite Genesis RPG:

Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday

The graphics are archaic (yet not the worst), but the developers made up for that with descriptive text and an irresistible element of curiosity.
ive been lookin for a rpg but i cant remember the name, the only thing i can really remember is that moon dust is a revival item, and u could take vehicles on the world map, and when u got into battles the vehicles had weapons u could use
That's Phantasy Star 4 - the revival item is Moon Dew.
Thanks for that list, QuickSciFi.
You're welcome Mr. Anderson. I compiled the list rather quickly, but maintained a Sega Genesis core system bias. Here's a more complete list of the Sega CD RPGs from Racketboy.com: http://www.racketboy.com/retro/sega/segacd/2009/06/the-sega-cd-mega-cd-rpg-library.html

I was surprised to find so many more...

P.S.> Is Buck Rogers really an RPG? If so, are the later Wonderboy series RPG? I've asked myself these questions many times. There are so many strategy games, platformers and action/adventure games with RPG elements to them. Question: How do we truly define RPGs?

I contradicted myself once, and with reason. I've nearly doubled my list and, still, I cannot venture to say it is complete (for one, I've not yet included those extra Sega CD exclussives, or even several MS titles for the PBC). Well, here it is, enjoy:

(BTW, some of these titles were exclussive to CHINA...Interesting...Well, at least we received Beggar Prince. I've included many titles overlapping the genres--You'd be the judge. Also, a couple of items, you may find, are still in progress today.)
