Movies you thought were gonna suck but did'nt

snotknocker

CAGiversary!
I'm not a big Jet Li fan and unleashed has been on cable for quite some time now.
The description of this movie kinda disuaded me from watching it. I really thought it would suck. But low and behold I wind up watching it and really liking it.

What flicks did you think were totally gonna suck but did'nt?

Unleashed and Running Scared were the first two movies that came to mind, kinda funny that they were the first two posts.

Benchwarmers. I hate Jon Heder and I thought the movie would blow and I pretty much avoided watching it at all costs... and then I saw it and thought it was hysterical.

Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course
The Rundown

And another one. I think it was called Kangaroo Jack? I caught the last half of it on Nickelodeon and thought it was pretty good.

I remember, back in the day, thinking that Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery was going to suck.

Oh, how wrong I was.

Now that I think about it True Romance was another one. This is one of my favorite movies but before i saw it the title led me to beleive it would totally suck

I'm not trying to talk myself, or anything... but I always do a lot of research before I see a film. So, generally, I know what to expect.

With that said, I often let my exgirlfriend pick what movie we went to, especially on weekends where there wasn't anything I was interested in seeing. Most times, I wouldn't expect much, but would be pleasantly surprised.

One that comes to mind is 28 Days Later..., which I somehow hadn't heard of prior to seeing. Being a fan of The Last Man on Earth, I was jazzed to see a reinvention of the same theme.

Talladega Nights - I tend to loathe dumb comedy, but it was rather entertaining.

Tomorrow I'm headed out to see Jackass 2 with some friends against my better judgement, because I'm absolutely 100% sure I'm going to hate it.
Oh well, matinee price is like $6, so it won't be that bad.

Jackass is smart dumb comedy, I guess you could say. A lot of the gags and stunts are, often times, pretty witty.

... except for Steve-O.

At first I was against seeing Snakes on a Plane, but after I heard people saying that it is so bad that it is good I had to go see it....

and then later that week see it again.

I'd say Grandma's Boy. I thought movie was going to be horrible, but I saw it with a friend when it came to DVD and it was actually pretty decent. Not a movie I would buy, but it was entertaining.

Couldn't agree more. I rented it merely because there was nothing else in the McDonalds Red Box really so I rented it and loved every minute of it.
Garden State - trailers looked wiitarded, glad I decided to see the movie
Thank Natalie. ;)

As for mine ... maybe The Boondock Saints.

"The boondock Saints" is like a classic how can you not want to see that...?
"The boondock Saints" is like a classic how can you not want to see that...?
Well my friend, who got me to see it, didn't really make it sound all that great when he told me that the only place to buy it was on VHS from blockbuster, previously viewed. So I just expected it to be good by his standards, which aren't very high, usually. It was better than I expected, but I wouldn't say it's a classic.

I try not to see movies that I think are going to suck, so I haven't really ever been "pleasantly surprised" or anything like that. I figured Running Scared would be okay, but I found it to be pretty much incredible (in terms of action films.) Garden State and Lost In Translation were both pretty surprising. I don't know, I try to be selective in terms of what I see.

hahah yeah, she drags me in to see all sorts of movies

White Chicks.... thought it would be horrible but I loved it. Same for Benchwarmers, one of the best movies I have seen this year. I also kinda liked Larry The Cable Guy Health Inspector, since everyone said it was so bad, but it was pretty good... hey, I thought so at least!

The Cave
Mindhunters

Neither movie would win awards for acting or anything but I found both movies to be rather entertaining and worth while even if the critics bashed them relentlessly.

Fight Club,

Saw the trailers, thought it was about Fighting and nothing more.....rented it... was proven WRONG and thought it was one of the best movies of 1999!!!

I would have to say the Matrix. I hate Keanu Reeves but he was passable in that film (the story and the special effects were the real star anyways).

Also an old B-Horror film called "Its Alive" about a mutant baby. It was better than I thought it would be.

same here, I totally skipped the Matrix because of the "Hype"... then saw it on video, and saw the previews for Matrix Reloaded ...Now I think the Matrix Trilogy is a lot better then the star wars trilogies :)

I don't hate Keanu, I just saw the preview and thought it would be like Johnny Nneumanic or whatever it was called. But man was I blown away. They are my favorite movies of all time.

No :shame:

I haven't seen it but I may based on Subbie's rec. The reason why I've stayed away from it is because these people I know around dryhump the movie like it's the best thing to come along since sliced bread though I kinda have some of the same love for "Mallrats".
Well a movie I saw where it wasn't as much the preview but all the bad press, can't remember if I saw it before or after but I like "Dude Where's My Car?". It's so stupid it's funny but not in an annoying "Dumb and Dumber" way.
"The Skeleton Key" I didn't think too much of after I found the American writer of "The Ring" did it when I thought they were referring to the Japanese one but it wasn't that bad.
As for Natalie Portman I prefer Nona Gaye if she wore her getup from the second XXX movie. She needs to start showing skin again after that movie, I love that Milk-slightly Dark Chocolate skin she's got.

A couple I remember are The Weather Man and Oldboy.

The Weather Man was actually pretty good, and Oldboy really is one of my favorite movies now.
i dont usually like chick flix and was forced to watch My Big Fat Greek Wedding and liked it a lot
Oh you pussy! ;-P Sorry couldn't resist.

I know this sounds terrible but I'm probably one of the few people who watches most Teen Comedies and likes them and gives them a pass though there are true few classics. I guess what I'm saying is it's hard to fuck up a Teen Comedy.
Brokeback Mountain. Thought I was going to hate it and it turned out to be a pretty good movie.
This is one of the movies I'm currently thinking is gonna suck.
Benchwarmers. I hate Jon Heder and I thought the movie would blow and I pretty much avoided watching it at all costs... and then I saw it and thought it was hysterical.
Agreed. I thought it was going to be stupid but ended up laughing my ass off.
Going to watch The Ringer tonight, hoping it surprises me, doubt it will though.

The Rundown, thought it would suck hard but it was really pretty good. Same goes for Not Another Teen Movie, most people hated it but I thought it was pretty funny.

The Princess Diaries. My girlfriend at the time and I were going to see some other movie for free, but all of these tickets were taken, so we stopped at a budget theatre and saw that.
