Germans shun violent video games
Mon 23 August, 2004 15:13
By Georgina Prodhan

LEIPZIG, Germany (Reuters) - Germans' reluctance to play violent video games and to spend much in a subdued consumer climate are proving stubborn obstacles to the growth of Europe's least-developed games market.

I guess it would be kind of weird playing a military FPS that is aimed at killing your great grandfather.

It seems like they are over-compensating for their past.

Yeah - that would be like the British buying a game about the American Revolution :)

what do you expect from a culture who thinks David Hasselhoff is a good entertainer? (No offense to David Hasslehoff fans or Germans)

Ive heard this from German bidders on Ebay. Everytime i put up something violent like Resident Evil they ask if i can ship to Germany because its the only way they can get the game unedited.

Germans don't need violent video games...they have violent disgusting porn instead. *shudders* Maybe they should ban that instead. I don't see how Germans could find anything offensive after putting out bondage scat humilation movies. Ick.

Funny, the japanese have nasty porn equal to german porn in its freakishness, and the japanese don't seem to have any issues about video game violence. Go figure.

An old saying about WW II goes that we won because we had better German generals (Eisenhower, for instance) than the Germans.

This article completely misses that theGerman government spent the 80's training its citizens to get all of their games via imports and piracy.

When I was at Cinemaware we had to produce a special Nazi-free version of Rocket Ranger just for that country. It had altered artwork to change all the uniforms and use a different symbol where swastikas appeared in the original. By the time it was done the story made almost no sense.

It sold badly to say the least.

Strangely enough, we still got plenty of fan mail and tech support letters from German addresses. These should all have gone to Mirrorsoft in the UK if they were owners of the offical German game. It became apparent there were more US imported and pirated copies of Rocket Ranger in Germany than the legal de-Nazi-fied version.

As a German-American (100% American in my heart, but my great grandfather was from the "Home Land") I would like to pass something that my Grandfather once said as he watch me playing Doom: "If Hitler had that maybe he wouldn't have been such an a-hole" Look at the upsurge of Nazi-youth in Germany now, France is a not-too-distant second when it comes to violence against imigrants. I would think if they had an outlet for this anger (in the form of a game that allowed them to kill) it might not be as bad.
