#13962559 CAGcast #536: A Holes Everywhere

Biden was appointed by Obama to lead a gun violence task force, so it would make sense for the VP to run it.   I personally think both meetings were held on the same premise -- finding an easy scapegoat in an industry that few people at that level of government really understand.  And like most meetings in Washington, probably ended with nothing really getting accomplished except a box getting checked.

[X] - Hold video game summit

I'm not sure why one would be considered a misguided meeting and the other an intentional distraction.  That sounds like your bias is showing.  Again.  I think both meetings were equally misguided distractions.

I'm just wondering if you were as critical of the Video Game Summit that happened in 2013 that was hosted by Joe Biden?

On the Mixer stuff -- I watched the daily briefing on Monday and got  Rare Replay and The Final Station.  I watched it on the Android app, and joined it when it was about 10 minutes in progress.  I didn't receive any emails from Mixer.  I checked the Mixer app a few hours later, checked the notifications icon, and it had a few messages about Thanks for watching -- MixPot is yours!  I then checked the Xbox store and, sure enough, those two games were showing up as already purchased.

I have no idea what Shipwreck and Wombat were talking about about cable TV costing nothing, but their statement that cable TV won't cost you any more a month with broadband is absolutely false.

I was a Time Warner Cable customer for many years and my bill for cable and Internet was around 160 a month.  This also included the rental of a DVR, which was around 15 dollars a month.  We did not get HBO, Showtime, or any other premium channel / service.  We called several times to try to get a package deal that would reduce our costs, and every time they told us they only had cheaper deals for new customers, or could only offer us a slightly cheaper deal for 6-12 months if we subscribe to another service like phone or home security, but once the special was up the cost would be higher than the 160 dollars we were already paying.

So we cut out cable TV entirely.  Our bill went from 160 dollars to less than 60 dollars a month.  We are saving over a hundred dollars a month just by cutting out cable.  I wish I would have done it years ago, because I haven't missed it one bit.  Oddly enough, since we still get the broadband,TWC uses the same unfiltered bandwidth to provide their basic channels.  So I can still get HD feeds from several channels: NBC, CBS, Fox, ABC, PBS, CNN, TBS, WGN to name a few of the major ones.  We get about 15 HD channels in all.  From what I understand, TWC is trying to eliminate this by encrypting all the channels, but most areas have not done this yet.  I believe NYC is one of the few areas where they actually have encrypted everything.

In addition to Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu we are also using the Chromecast quite a bit.  It's pretty easy just to go to cbs.com, and find the latest episode of Big Bang Theory or whatever, then stream it to the Chromecast.  I was surprised to see that even the History channel has all the latest full episodes of Pawn Stars on their web site.  So go with your instinct and don't get cable.  I'm sure you could put a digital antenna behind your TV and get all the major networks, including PBS, so you can still catch all your episodes of Frontline.

Here's Shipwreck's complaints against Destiny:

1. No story; repetition
2. Enemy AI isn't good
3. Bosses are nothing more than bullet sponges; go on way too long
4. The loot is not good

That's pretty hilarious because you can apply that perfectly to Borderlands.

1.  Example of a typical Borderlands mission:
Get mission from person/board in town.  Mission specifies to collect X from Y to get Z.  Travel to area.  Shoot enemies until you get X from Y.  Hand in X and get Z.  Examine Z to find out that it's no better than the Z you already have equipped.  Sell Z.

Not a good example?  Here's another.  Lead Claptrap to computer and wait for Claptrap to access computer while you kill enemies.  Sounds pretty similar to Destiny, except replace Claptrap with Dinklebot.

Borderlands is going for a comical characters with fantasy type environments.  Destiny is grounded in science fiction with more realistic environments.  Vault Hunter seeking the ultimate loot, is no better story line element than Guardian seeking to recapture parts of the solar system from invaders.

2.  Here's an example of enemy AI in Borderlands: Level 40 Psycho sees you and runs in your direction.  Unload full magazine into the Psycho's face.  Psycho continues to run at you unabated.  Run backwards while reloading, and then unload second full magazine into Psycho's face.  Psycho dies.

3.  Example of a Borderlands boss fight: Spiderant boss looks like every other spiderant, but this one is scaled larger and maybe is a different color.  Unload hundreds of rounds of ammunition into the boss.  Kill small spiderants that have spawned all around the spiderant boss.  Spiderant boss turns a different color.  Unload hundreds of more rounds into spiderant boss into the special unarmored yellow weak spot.  Kill spiderant boss and collect loot that is no better than the loot you are already carrying.  Sell loot.

The boss fights in Borderlands are the definition of bullet sponge battles that go on way too long.  In the later levels of Borderlands 2 on the Ultimate Vault Hunter setting every single enemy in Borderlands is a bullet sponge.

4.  The loot.  I mentioned this last week, but I'll mention it again.  Loot drops are plentiful in Borderlands, but after awhile it becomes inventory filling white noise.  Rare colored items abound, but in most cases they aren't very good.  It gets annoying to check every piece of equipment and compare them just to look for one that has a slightly better rate of fire, or one that has slightly better reload times.  Not to mention playing with three other people that picked up their slightly better weapon and now have to try it out to see if they like it or not.

I much prefer having rare loot drops that are actually hard to come by instead of being inundated with junk.  Borderlands loot drops are borderline annoying.

I thoroughly enjoyed Destroy All Humans: Path of the Furon.  It plays just like the Xbox games.  I think the major criticism was that it was too similar to those games and didn't really do anything groundbreaking with the 360 hardware.  If you liked the style  and game play of the original games, I don't see any reason why you would not like this one.  1000g is fairly easy too -- from what I can remember.

I think there were fewer comments on last week's CAG cast thread because it's harder to get the show feedback thread.  Prior to E3 there was a link right on the front page to the latest CAG cast thread.  Now the E3 audioboo / photostream has removed that from the front page so people have to go in the forum list to get to the CAG cast thread.

Sign me up for the Max giveaway.  And disappointed no talk on the cagcast concerning Wombat's Lost Key Saga.  Maybe this is due to Saga copyright?

So should i not attempt to do this

Many people got console banned, and a few got gamertag banned from getting free content just like this back in September.  I, for one, will not be tempting the banhammer again.

Had to laugh around the 5 minute mark.  Love you Wombat, but you don't always have to follow up every kid story with a kid story of your own!

No bans reported today. That's got to be a good sign for those who have survived thus far.

A little too early to say that.  More than likely the MS Enforcement team are still combing through Bosnia, Oman, Moroccan, Russian logs and compiling another list of consoles and accounts.  If we can get to Saturday and not hear of any new reports, then maybe people can rest a little easier.

It used to help me a little bit when I looked at the user's info and saw what area of the world they were posting from.  Sometimes (not always) that helped to quickly disseminate if the content was for the US or somewhere else.
