Liked your post only to encourage you to post more... considering my dislike for shitlunky you should be most flattered.

Thanks Topside, lube you too.

I'm done with those "leadership" courses for work now, thankfully.  Still not really sure what the point was: I'll make slightly more money and they slapped a fancy new title on me, but there's zero additional responsibilities and essentially no room for upward mobility in our section.  Transferring to another section is possible but I'd need to go for a master's in social work, which I just don't know if I have in me.

But hey, if they'd like to pay me more in the meantime for

that's totally fine by me.  Maybe eventually I can work my way to a position that allows me to be on CAG all day long like some of you glorious bastards.   :D

Cool, the game just keeps getting more and more accessible as you keep playing it. First it seems that beating it all in one run is impossible, then it seems that getting to hell is impossible, then it seems like beating the game in 8 mins is impossible. But it all becomes more and more attainable as you keep playing, it's really cool.

One of my favorite things these days is when my husband will pick up the controller and say, very sincerely, "Today I'm going to beat Yama!"  We both know he won't make it out of the mines, but the bravado and seriousness of the way he says it never gets old, lol.

He never dies to the more complicated things like shopkeeper fights or treasure traps.  It's always fall damage, running into enemies, or my personal favorite -- approaching a set or two of spikes that for us old pros are nothing at all.  But he'll wiggle the character back and forth like a cat that can't decide if it can make the jump, followed by a great leap up....

and right onto the spikes.

Spelunky is truly the gift that keeps on giving.

That's where the wife wants to move. Hipster central, isn't it?

Eh, sure compared to anywhere else in the country but it's died down a lot in recent years.  And it was never really a significant aspect of living here anyway.  It's not like there are hordes of them wandering the streets Invasion of the Body Snatchers style or anything.  I'll gladly suffer a few pretentious dudes in porkpie hats and bad beards to live in a mostly-liberal mid-sized city in close proximity to amazing forests and mountains and with an abundance of craft beer and legal weed.

I wish Derek Yu (Spelunky dev) would give some hint as to what vidya game he's working on now, if any. I've been following him on twitter for a long time and no clues given.

I'm continually surprised that Derek Yu doesn't seem keen on revisiting Spelunky.  Talk about an instant gold mine.

Sometimes I daydream about what Spelunky 2 could be like; really detailed stuff in my mind's eye about levels, enemies, items, etc.  It definitely trips that "I want to design games when I grow up!" sense of wonder I had when I was a bright-eyed lil' kid.

I had fun 'proselytizing' about FF14 last weekend so I thought I'd do it a little more again today by sharing another aspect of it that I really enjoy; its opening movie.  Even without dialogue I feel like it's one of the best damn game cinematics ever made. If this is what Spirits Within or Advent Children had been like I would've been way more enthusiastic about them.

Context: The Garlean Empire (primary antagonists) believes that neighboring Eorzea (players' home) is full of heretical lesser forms of life so they decide to pull down the red moon Dalamud and just obliterate the entire continent.  Their plan goes off the rails when it turns out that the moon is a prison for the elder primal Bahamut, who goes on an apocalyptic rampage once freed.  This event is known as the Calamity, and although the world survives it's completely transformed and the collective memory of that time is hazy at best for reasons unknown.

This was the transition event that rebooted the game from its miserable 1.0 state to its immensely better current one, hence the subtitle A Realm Reborn.  I still watch this movie periodically in the in-game viewer simply because it's gorgeous in hd and sounds amazing with a full home theater behind it.  And of course all the FF callbacks in it! (e.g. the guy at 2:20 is this game's Cid)

Tyler, small correction from your IA piece earlier:

"Perhaps it’s the play testers, or perhaps there is a small team whose soul purpose is to review each game and decide its Platinum fate."

Trophies are serious business for sure, but maybe not that serious?   ;)

Also relevant over on GAF:

Sony's outdated Trophy policies are affecting achievement parity with other platforms

I've been curious about FFXIV but really don't get into games with subscription plans and MP requirements. Looking over the trophy list shows that there is a main campaign to beat, though--how long does that take, and is the class and critter balance such that it's possible to solo that stuff?

You could definitely beat the main campaign within the 30-day trial period if you focused on the central questline and didn't get too distracted by the many other things to do in the world (crafting, gathering, sidequest'ing, etc.)

That being said, the first half or so of the main story is pretty trope-y and it takes a bit get going.  It's decent, just not mind-blowing or anything: It's basically the prelude to the much better story that unfolds after the end of the initial campaign and leads into the recent full expansion, Heavensward.

With regard to MP/solo'ing, basically everything in the game can be solo'd except for dungeons, of which there are about a dozen that you're required to go through to clear the main campaign.  While you technically have to team up with 3 other people for each of those, you don't have to know your party members or even speak to them if you don't wish to.

When you queue up for a dungeon the game automatically matches you with other queued players from all the servers to round out the mandatory party requirements: 1 Healer, 1 Tank, and 2 Damage Dealers.  This usually means that healers and tanks have next to no wait time, while damage dealers have to wait a bit longer simply because more people play those classes.  But in all the dungeons I've run I've never had to wait more than 10 minutes to get started, and any given dungeon only takes about 15-30 minutes to clear, so they're really not that demanding.

As far as critter/class balance, you can be any class at any time and are encouraged to vary it up by way of cross-class skills and exp bonuses.  At level 30 (which you could hit in a week easily with minimal playtime) you get access to a customizable chocobo that will fight alongside you, further enhancing solo potential outside of dungeons.

You could just hunt critters solo to level up but it's far more efficient to take part in FATE's, which are basically quick group hunts that occur spontaneously and constantly all over each map.  Like, a bunch of monsters will pop up in a timed/themed event and several nearby players will cooperate to take 'em out.  Again, you don't have to talk to anyone or join a party, you just all sort of show up and work together for a short bit of time for bonus exp and loot.

If you have any further questions just let me know; I could go on about this game all day    :D

Soph has been quiet lately too, but he's still been creeping around.

That's right Soph... I see you liking posts from three days ago!

Remember when Cleaner was in management training and was barely around for a few weeks?  That's been me lately.  I don't have the same level of enthusiasm she did since there's not much room for advancement, but they're paying for tons of stuff and it looks good on the resume so...

Also, I've completely fallen down the rabbit hole of Final Fantasy 14.  It's easily the best FF game of the last decade.  Course it's also the only FF game of the last decade aside from the 13 trilogy so the bar's set pretty low.  But it really is great; if someone liked 12 even a little they would probably love 14.

It's been funny to see Derextreme up at crazy hours hooked on Elder Scrolls Online too.  Our struggle is real:

Good luck with Job Search 2: Electric Bugle-oo!

If it doesn't work out this time, just bitch about it in the thread and that should do the trick?

Has anyone here played through dokuro?

It would be a great game to complement your new "play it don't plat it" mindset.  It's really charming and definitely worth a playthrough but I hated platting it, mainly because it runs too long for its own good and has a few frustrating "can't get hit" trophies in there.
