Diablo II: Resurrected - Tech Test / Alpha Test.

Spent a little over 6 hours with this over the past weekend's Tech Test / Free Weekend. I got lucky and got in. There's no NDA here, so I can speak on this.

I've got plenty to say. And yes, I think many gamers are going to be very happy with this; past fans and newcomers alike.

Did you basically want Diablo II: Complete Edition (with LoD expansion), but prettier w/ modern resolutions, modern textures, modern performance (i.e. 60fps), and some few tweaks? Well, this is what you're getting. And it's awesome.

Not all of the content was in the Tech Test/Alpha Build here. Namely, you had Acts 1 and 2 here. Not all of the characters were here - Barbarian; Sorceress; and Amazon are here. And it was eating up 30GB of space here. Can't wait to see what this game's size will be, once it's all finally here.

It plays like Diablo II, even in new graphics mode. You have some UI and AI adjustments you can make it use, if you want - you can make text look bigger; put the Mini-Map in small corners (instead of the old full-screen transparent mini-map); etc etc. You don't have to, though - as you can still use the old full-screen mini-map and the normal UI, if you like.

It looks great - similar to Diablo III in some ways (i.e. modern), but it also has the Diablo II gritty-ness. It felt too bright (but not as bright as D3) out-the-box, but that can be remedied by cranking Gamma setting down. Luckily, in new graphics mode, if you crank down the Gamma setting in D2:R, you can get this game looking dark, like D2 should look. But it certainly looks smoother and more animated - and all of this is executed real well - in its new mode. Though, it's not entirely gritty as D2 old-school version though, as....well, pixelation still also gives D2 some of its grit.

Regardless, on-the-fly, you can hit a hotkey and switch b/t New Graphics Mode and Legacy Mode. Like C&C Remaster, Halo: MCC's older games, and whatnot - D2:R also allows you to switch b/t old-school graphics and new-school graphics at anytime you want, while on-the-fly and in the middle of actual gameplay. If you want to see how great it looks now (with modern looks for assets & resolutions) and also what it looked like back in its day in its pixelated glory (up to max of 800x600, like the old game) - you're free to do so.

It ran fine here on my RTX 3070-based PC (with also an i7 10700KF; 16 GB RAM; W10 x64) at 1080p60fps in new mode; and also at 60fps in 800x600 mode when switching to Legacy mode. I love that I can switch easily here b/t the two modes, on-the-fly and all.

It's still difficult at times for me, at its default setting. Namely, when you got too many enemies on-screen, not utilizing your skills properly, not equipping your gear right, and whatnot. You still pay the piper here and lose your equipped items and lose all your money - so you have to go back to get your body to get it all back. You still sink points into skills here; and your stats and its number...when you level-up. You still hear and the excellent sounds and music, as you're fighting enemies and looting them for another piece of loot like they are a pixelated piñata; and you're likely going to Stash or Sell this gear at the Vendor. You're going to get Gems and socket them into equipment.

While I'm very familiar w/ keyboard and mouse gameplay and the clicker-fest that Diablo II is, it also surprisingly also plays solid with a controller. Sure, not entirely my gameplay style of choice here, but it seems to play just fine and when I feel like leaning back & relaxing in my gaming chair, instead of say getting all intense on the keyboard/mouse and up-close & personal with my monitor and the on-screen action.

The few modernizations and tweaks, and options that are here - all feel like it's here as options; and some might find that stuff necessary, some might not, which will probably depends on the player. Most importantly, D2: Resurrected feels like D2 in every way without changing what made D2 so great - it plays & feels like D2 in both graphics modes; looks like D2 in old mode; and everything.

This is just a Tech Demo and Tech Alpha here - and it's already in great shape, IMHO. Pretty much, everything here looks on-track and is very impressive here, as long as they keep doing things...just like this.

D2: Resurrected looks like it'll be basically exactly what I wanted out of a D2: Remaster.

Can't wait to see the final version, once it's out, sometime down the road.

The first game in that series tried to take itself seriously but a bunch of streamers played it as a joke game and laughed at how stupid it was and he intentionally made the next one a lot more absurd.  Including a clip where used a missile to blow up a couple of youtubers who had been critical of the series.  He does not exactly take criticism of his games or himself well at all.  I actually figured he would eventually go too far in some way and get booted off the platform entirely.

At any rate, I am still a bit surprised Valve ever allowed any adult games on the platform, cartoony or otherwise.  Online payment services have a history of dropping businesses because of adult content because it is not worth the hassle, especially in the US.  I think the people who get mad over stuff like this are in for a rude awakening when Valve eventually decides the genre in general is not worth it and goes back to doing away with even the games with adult content that they allow now.

GOG and Epic both refused to sell this particular game as well.

Makes me think of working retail and having a mother come in to buy her son a GTA game. She asked about the game and I told her it had drug use and tons of violence and murder and she was like "as long as there's no sex". :/

Hookers for health regeneration?

This reminds me of seeing Watchmen (for the second time) in the theater and some mom brought in two very young kids (maybe 8-9 years old for the oldest and the other a few years younger.)

Anyhow, they made it through the brutal fight scene that starts the movie but were gone shortly after the lesbian kiss in the opening credits.

Hm. Well, I really liked The Outer Worlds, but it came out when I had a GP sub converted using that trick where you could get Gold to convert to Ultimate. I wanted to like A Plague Tale--the core idea was interesting, but the execution of the mechanics was awful. I quit after making the wrong turn when trying to escape villagers for the tenth time in the second chapter. Youngblood is pretty decent for what it is, but I'm just not that much of a shooter guy. I agree with your main point, though. I would have been mildly annoyed about spending money on something like A Plague Tale or Mudrunner or Overpass.

Outer Worlds just didn't grab me.  I felt like the progression system was bland and the hyper "lolcapitialism" humor started to wear thin by the time I hit the space station.  To be fair, Space Opera is probably my least favorite genre so it was a heavy lift from the start.  Plague Tale just started to feel very samey and, like you said, the mechanics weren't great so "samey" got old in a hurry.  I think I made it 50-60% through the game before just losing interest.  Youngblood might be more fun with in human co-op than AI companion but mainly the franchise just gets further away from "killing Nazis" each time this one was feeling like more cut scene than Nazi killing.  Likewise for Doom Eternal; I get that a lot of people liked the gun/chainsaw/melee/whatever juggling but I just wanted to shoot demons, not constantly jump through hoops to be allowed to shoot demons.

None of these were "bad" games and I could see the quality in all of them.  All were games that I was pretty confident that I'd enjoy.  Just none were really for me in practice and I was glad I played each one on Game Pass instead of spending $15-$20 each, even on sale.  I'm pretty confident that I'm attracted to Nier due to slick aesthetics and it looking fun seeing someone else play but once my skill level hits the wall, I'll drop it like a hot coal so knowing I don't have to pay for that is nice.

Also getting Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire - Ultimate Edition either this week or next.

Those 27 months of Game Pass Ultimate I got back in December is probably the best $100 I've spent in years.

Only thing that worries/annoys me is that it's highly unlikely Square Enix will allow Nier: Automata to be modded, so we'll be stuck with all the issues that plague the game.

If you all keep this up, MysterD will start talking in third person.

And no one wants that.

Just kidding MysterD, I think it'd be funny.

My 2p on Fuser:

Spoiler

Agreed on Fuser.  I had my doubts, but found it really fun and odd music combos still worked well together.  I only regret that I forgot to play it until the end of the free weekend.  I'll pick it up cheap sometime for sure, but getting songs in DLC will add up.

I would like the weekly bundle a whole lot more if I didn't already have half of it, but I've been interested in Blacksad so I may talk myself into it anyway.

The new monthly seems solid for $6, but I also wish I hadn't bought Chimera Squad with its launch discount.  Oh well.

I'd love to get Xcom Chimera Squad for $6!  I've gotten bundles, but never done the monthly since I'm mostly a console gamer.  How would one get that discount?

Sweet. I've been lookin' for the Linux thread!

So, umm....what's the best flavor of Linux for PC Gaming and WiFi/Internet connection in the modern era?

And what's the most basic & lean Linux for just straight-up Internet access w/ an old PC (with WiFi or hard-wire connection) and fast OS boot-times even on old-mechanical HDD's?

mostly that it's non-existent.

Okay I was going to suggest changing your power management settings but that's not going to help with that problem.
