#13511001 CAGcast #473: Skyrim the Stress Away

Posted by BlueRock on 05 November 2016 - 06:15 PM

It's kind of interesting to hear the gang pitching Playstation TV for 20 minutes. A portable console made cheaper, like a little Apple TV and it only works with your TV, no touch support? Your saves work between the two automatically, no buying games twice?

Yep, that's Playstation TV (Vita TV).

Of course, it's a little difference because a "Switch TV" would have Nintendo games on it. But I'm not sure that it's actually a good idea. It encourages developers to not use what your console can offer, but instead the intersection of the portable and less capable home device.

To Wombat's question, how are all the companies able to release significant updates in a short period? It's probably mostly for the same reasons the consoles are "disappointingly slow". That is, the entire industry has a crisis in chip technology. The half-step technology between the 28nm process and the 16nm process never really worked out. That's why you see NVidia able to make such a large leap in one generation and it's why the consoles are going to leap ahead so soon.

There were no GPUs made on the 22nm process and AMD never made any CPUs/APUs on it either. Only Intel made CPUs on it and the consoles don't use Intel.

The original consoles had to be scaled back due to process problems so now catching up looks like leaping ahead.

Also, I wouldn't worry about market confusion. These will be pro consoles and priced as such. The slims will be the mainline consoles. These will be like an "Elite controller", there for those who play a lot of games and want to spend more on their hobby to make the experience a bit better.

Of course it will get weird at some point in the future when they make a slim (and cheap model) of the pro versions. Then will there be a new pro above those? It's new territory I guess we'll find out when we get there.

Right now, Patrick Klepek of Giantbomb is suggesting that MS should abandon the camera stuff for Kinect and keep the voice support, maybe with a cheaper device.

Which is what the Cheap Asses suggested months ago.

BatShip Industries should build upon this and create a proper consulting agreement with MS.

When MS bought the exclusivity for Titanfall from EA they likely guaranteed some amount of revenue to EA on consoles. This would be to make up for the lost console revenue from PS4 sales.

Time rolls around to now and MS either decides the sales of Xbox One are low enough they'll have trouble meeting the guaranteed revenue from sales or else they just think Xbox One sales could use a bump.

So instead of making up for lost revenues by sending EA cash, they just figured they could bundle the game, so even though they have to pay EA money per console sold, they at least are getting something for it (Xbox One sales).

So that's probably how the bundle happened. It sprouted from MS' obligations to EA.

I'd like to enter for one of the Super Leage Football pinball game codes, as I have a PS4. Did you say you were giving away a copy of inFamous too? I think that was a joke or just an excuse to mention Wal-Mart, but if true, enter me for that too please.

brutus, you're trying to make this about speed and snapping now. Yes, the Xbox One has a big advantage in these and always will. The point was whether you lose where you were in your game when switching to TV with other consoles and the answer is you don't. You just leave the game running like on Xbox.

I also find your examples to be silly. If I ever want to use Bing (or Google) on my TV, I'll send you a PM about it first. Don't go holding your breath. I have a phone, tablet and usually a laptop for searching the internet and they all work better than using a console to do it (Google's voice recognition is great and on the laptop you can even use a keyboard). I also don't use Skype on my TV, although I do admit many people do, just not me.

Now my discussion turns to Wombat as nearly all do eventually. Wombat surely gets TV audio when his soundbar is off because his soundbar passes audio to the TV when it is turned off. That's a good feature to have in a soundbar. As to why his system doesn't work right, it doesn't seem to be due to anything he's doing wrong. I would suggest that the problem is the Xbox and this kind of problem is probably why multichannel audio pass is considered in beta right now. MS will presumably get this ironed out over the next couple updates.

#11293504 CAGcast #346: Forza No Moreza

Posted by BlueRock on 28 November 2013 - 07:06 PM

Forza 5 already lost me when they refused to support steering wheels used for Forza 3/4. I bought the Fanatec 911 Turbo S wheel for those games. I shouldn't even have had to buy that, but MS won't let devs support non-licensed USB devices. So I couldn't use my Logitech G25 on Forza.

So I buy that for a smooth $300+ and then MS (Turn 10) won't support it on XBox One so I'm supposed to buy another MS-specific wheel? Get over yourselves, guys. I can use the G25 on the PS3, PS2 and I'm sure the PS4 too.

You have out how to treat your customers instead of looking at how much of a ride you can take them for.

Beyond that, Forza 5 is a bit of a disappointment. MS taking out cars is one thing, if they don't want to do what GT5 did, and have some cars without finished interiors, there is little they can do. But taking out tracks is complete garbage. They say the tracks were to low-res and now are being laser scanned? Give me a break. Track geometry isn't something that changes in next-gen. The track layout is already modeled far finer than one part in 1080 or one part in 1920. Take the track layout you used before and put some new textures on and let us drive it. But no, MS would rather sell it to us.

This started before Forza 5. Forza 3 and 4 were big on the special editions. The special and VIP editions brought more cars and special listings in the marketplace. It really got to where the $80 edition was the norm.

It bothered me as a non-Gold member to see how much of Forza 4 was denied to me for not paying MS $60/year. I couldn't buy and sell cars in the auction house? How is that online play?

But most galling by far was that Turn 10 sent me free cars for buying Forza 4 early, and for playing it a lot. They'd send me an in-game message with the car, but I was unable to collect it because non-Gold members couldn't receive or send cars. So their message which was supposed to be something to make me feel good about the game and being a customer instead was a reminder (for two weeks until the message expired) that MS required I tithe to get the full experience.

Thanks for the work producing another CAGcast, Cheapy. I know you play down the amount of editing you do, but it's definitely more effort than the rest of us have to put in to download it.

I see Cheapy tweeted he was right again when it comes to insisting that you can't assume more powerful hardware means a game will work better. I look forward to Cheapy applying this same level of foresight in the future by not explaining he'll get the PCPCPC version of a game because it'll clearly play better.

I guess we'll find out.

Shipwreck gave a strong pointer to a part of the problem right there after the question and Cheapy just skips right past it.

The CAGcast is pretty pro-Xbox. That puts PlayStation fans on edge.

And calling out PS fans as being childish seems crazy given the episode with Wombat being Xbox gamer of the week and getting Xbox "fans" crapping all over him to a level that it becomes gaming news. There are babies on both sides, Sony didn't corner the market.

Now, as to why PS fanbois are aggressive right now, it's probably because they finally have some ammunition. People slagged the PS3 for years, with crummy ports and such and what's a PlayStation fan to do? It's hard to argue the point when someone says the PS3 version of Bayonetta is junk. So the PS fans are all raring to go and when they finally have some ammo, they're letting loose.

In addition, I think the PS people see a crack in the defenses and now want to put a heavy offensive on. When PSN went down for a month, did the MS fanbois hold back or did they go on the offensive? Well, now that MS is stumbling, things are just reversed.

And I think one thing that's feeding the fire is CheapyD being so aggressively dismissive of the spec difference between PS4 and XBOne. He says that does it really matter, don't you want to see the games first? Well Cheapy, let me ask you. How many times have you said you'd be getting the PCPCPC version of a game because it'll look better? Did you wait to play it yourself first? Or did you assume that better hardware means the game will look better? You assumed the PC version would look better. Now, when there is a measurable difference between XBox and PS4, you just say, well, don't read too much into it, there's more to the story.

So PS fanbois see Cheapy as a leader in the group being dismissive of the PS4 advantage and they begin to call out Cheapy for it. Is it the right thing to do? No. But that's what's happening, and it might be somewhat less of a blowup if Cheapy weren't so vocal about wanting to use the machine with better hardware (PCPCPC) when making his own buying decisions.

And finally, the reason Cheapy can slag Kinect and not get much of a response is because motion gamers don't represent the hardcore "in your face" type of fanboi that likes to get into internet arguments. Not on Xbox, not on PS3. If Cheapy slagged PSEye, do you think he'd get a lot of kickback from PS fans? Not hardly.

I've learned to live with the Xbox leaning of the CAGcast, it's not entirely without reason. But please, going forward, at least try to understand that that is part of the reason you see an opposition from the PS fanbois.

And on other news, my local Target has had PS4 presence for weeks. It's just set of pegs for games (not the preorder cards) with the PS4 placard behind it. It was stocked with PS3 games for a long time, but surely it has some PS4 ones now. There's no endcap, but then again there's no XBOne endcap either. Although the XBOne games rack is more visible than the PS4 one by any measure. I'm not sure why this is.

For the record, I don't think Cheapy is some kind of shill because he owns MS stock.
