#13918562 CAGcast #527: Poe Strikes Back

Posted by Jasper Kazai on 01 January 2018 - 02:24 AM

*shrug* I liked the movie. Saw it a second time today, and still enjoyed it. As a huge Star Wars fan, I spent a lot of my time reading a ton of the Expanded Universe novels. Then Disney bought SW and scrapped all of it. So I'm just along for the ride with whatever they end up doing in these movies. If they were adapting those old novels, I'd probably be more critical of it if they changed stuff. But now, I'm just content with being able to watch more Star Wars. Cheapy is absolutely not wrong to dislike the movie, but him being incredibly petulant about it isn't a good look.

However, it was fairly amusing to hear Cheapy, who regularly shits on the prequels, say that Revenge of the Sith "wasn't that bad" and was better than The Last Jedi.

Also, about Rey leaving the big evil ship after the lightsaber/guard fight:

Cheapy and Shipwreck couldn't comprehend the Senran Kagura light beams. It's not shooting out of their... parts. It's a Japanese censorship trope where instead of using something like black bars, they use beams of light. Sometimes use steam if it's a bath-related scene. So yeah. They don't have laser boobs.

I'm with Thorbahn about 4DX. Every time it's been described on your E3 trips, it sounds nothing but annoying as hell to me. I'm no fun, I guess. Also, something that Cheapy and Shipwreck wouldn't have to deal with is getting wet when you wear glasses is incredibly bad since you have to wipe them off in order to be able to properly see again. Having that happen throughout the movie would be terrible.

"When will the Bahamas become boring for Cheapy?" was my first thought upon seeing his Twitter photos from the trip.

A severe lack of Hitman and Doom. Also, you haven't been going somewhere since you were a kid if you haven't been there in 30 years.

Fairly sure that only Cheapy played Hitman, and he only has like 4 hours played on it to boot. I think he said something about it didn't really appeal to him on a recent cast. Just a game that was overlooked by them.

Edit: are these on itunes yet?  The link above isn't working.

Copy the RSS feed link, go to iTunes > File > Subscribe to Podcast... and paste the URL. Don't know why they aren't just being put in the regular CAG feed, but they're not. I had similar issues trying to get it into iTunes before I rediscovered the subscribe via URL option.

Team Fortress 2 was not originally free, but it's been free for like the past 5 or 6 years.

While I ended up enjoying Overwatch in the couple of beta phases I played in, I absolutely agree with Shipwreck and Wombat in that the animated movies are a thousand times more interesting than the actual game. I also don't think it's worth $40 (or 60), but I'm a cheapass. (And this is the site to be one!)

Ghostbusters has always seemed to be billed as a family/kids movie, which I don't think is quite right. When I went to see Star Wars with my family this past December, the theater had a poster up for a classic family movie night they run monthly. The one coming up at the time was Ghostbusters, and it even specifically stated that it was good for kids. We looked at each other and said that it doesn't seem quite right... It's not the worst thing for a kid to see, but... I don't think they would even enjoy it much.

I went and looked at Cheapy's Twitter and the guy who was angry about Minecraft Story Mode has replied to a bunch of Rockstar Games tweets about various GTA Online events and stuff with "Yawns." So that's how he spends his time.

If Tai told you anything other than "Herobrine isn't real," then he was WRONG.

There actually was a single player mode in Battlefront II that was more than just playing vs. bots. SWBFII came out around the time that Episode III did, and there was a campaign that loosely followed the events of the movie. Additionally, there was a mode called Galactic Conquest (or something like that) where it was a bunch of battles vs. bots like you said, but they were stringed together via a board game-style metagame where the objective was to take control over the galaxy. So when you compare it to that, having no SP is kind of taking a chunk out of the game.

Personally I remember loving the Battlefront games (largely because I'm a huge Star Wars fan), but when I think about it, a large, large majority of my time with those games was playing couch split-screen with a friend against bots because it was before I started to really play online games normally. I only played the second game online on my PC a handful of times. So without that present, I don't know. Still going to get it, though, since I love Star Wars and all that.

I use Newegg quite a bit, so it's cool that they sponsor you guys now.

Did Cheapy ever tell his story he mentioned ages ago? He was saving it until he got back in NY.

He mentioned briefly that it involves certain parties that he doesn't want to insult or at least divulge this particular story without their go ahead so we may never hear it. I believe he said this on the second CAGcast from NYC after people asked about it in the showthread for the first NYC show.

It's already been pointed out, but the H in horno is silent.

First Hawaii is boring, and now a paid-for apartment in Manhattan sucks. What tragedy will strike next in the lifestyle of the rich and famous CheapyD? :-P

Wombat, regarding your opinion of Spelunky; I gotta agree with Jeff Cannata on a recent episode of the /filmcast (ep. 291) when he said he often bristles at the criticism when someone says they didn't like something because they fell asleep. That has more to do with your state or sleep pattern than the film you're watching (or in this case game you're playing), and is not really a valid criticism.

I can't say I agree with that, but I don't know that guy's full argument. I could see falling asleep even during a movie you enjoy, so that can make sense. But a game is something you have to actively engage in; you are controlling it. Falling asleep during that does speak to something about your enjoyment of the game. I also agree with Wombat in that I don't like Spelunky either; just not my type of game in the slightest.

I think you guys are a bit blinded by nostalgia when it comes to your disbelief that people are seeing the Transformers movies. (Not in your opinion of them - that's fine, you're allowed to feel as you do.) For other people, they don't have any background with Transformers like you did watching the cartoons. To them, it's just this movie series. I was a bit too young for the original cartoons myself, so I don't have that background, and I don't think the movies are as bad as people make them out to be. They're no masterpieces by a longshot, but somewhat enjoyable action flicks. Of course, I haven't seen the most recent one (nor do I have any plans to, really), and I also got to see the 3rd movie for free at my university so that helped.

I'm with others in this thread when they say Wombat won't like Rogue Legacy. (Disclaimer: I have not played it myself.) I've watched a few people stream it, and it's grinding out deaths over and over to make progress. I'm pretty sure that is like the opposite of what Wombat wants in games.

"Cheated out of"
I didn't realize we were entitled to them. I don't believe they advertise 10 coins as being a guaranteed part of every purchase.

Well, you buy the PC if you want the best, but if you want to spend $400, you buy the PS4.

Not so much for CoD and AC... AC has Uplay to deal with, and CoD has always been developed for consoles with PC being little more than a port. I say this as a PC gamer.

I played the Titanfall beta, and I do not agree with the hype at all. The regular run-and-gun of it felt almost exactly like CoD, but with added parkour, stealth, and an incredibly stupid auto-aim gun. It was fine, but I don't see a reason to play Titanfall for this portion of the game when CoD already exists.

And then there's the mechs. I hated the mechs. Each game I was in was just a rush to which team can get all their mechs first, and whomever manages this wins. It was just not fun for me in the slightest. Also, I thought the escape mechanic was a needless waste of time. You've already lost, why drag it out? Not to mention the fact that the team that won can just camp the dropship in their Titans and then nuke it from the sky, making anything you try to do a futile effort.

You guys kept saying "this was the beta, it might change," but you pretty much have played the full game. When a game goes into such a big open beta like this did, you're playing the final product. Yes, some features were missing and they will tweak a few things, but for the most part, that was the game that will be released.

And I still agree with Wombat's original prediction that it will not have lasting popularity. But we'll see.
