#14124004 XBL Deals - 2019

Posted by dwo on 29 January 2019 - 07:22 PM

I don't own any of next months games but I have gotten 100% on rogue with a hard copy but having it available is nice.

If I recall correctly it isn't a true remaster but an upgraded port. There would probably be framerate increases and slight graphical improvement but nothing amazing. I haven't played the X1 version yet but with the 360 version being free I'd recommend only getting the remaster if you're a big fan of the franchise.

X enhanced version of the remaster has 4K assets on par with original PC release, and higher quality shadows. It’s also locked at 30 frames per second.

The original 360 version is 720p with an unlocked frame rate. On the 360 it usually ran between 20-40 fps. Not sure how it runs thought back compat.

Overall I think the game held up well for the remaster. It’s an appreciable performance/visual improvement, but it’s probably not worth the $20-ish sale price if you’re content with getting the 360 version for free.

#14115165 Target - $4.99 - Select Nintendo 3DS games

Posted by dwo on 07 January 2019 - 01:43 AM

Maybe my viewpoint is in the minority, but I don't get the appeal of the Switch.  For portable usage it's too large to carry around  - much prefer the 3DS or Vita form factor for gaming on the go.  For home usage the Switch is based on a mobile tech so it offers a compromised experience compared to the PS4/Xbox.  For instance the Switch versions of AAA games like Skyrim, Doom & Wolfenstein are impressive, BUT there is no doubt their performance is compromised compared to the other versions.

The Switch exclusives (specially those made by Nintendo) on the other hand are amazing, but between:

  1. The great collection of games on the 3DS (and other older Nintendo systems)
  2. The NES/SNES Classics making Nintendo's greats easier than ever to access
  3. The fact that most of the standout indie games on Switch are available on other consoles

... I don't feel like I'm missing out not having a Switch... yet.

I'd probably bite if Nintendo released a smaller 5-inch screen sized Switch for portable usage only (near the dimensions of the Vita/3DS).  I'd even be interested in a Switch designed solely for TV usage.  I just don't want to pay extra for a converting system when I don't need that feature.

Though admittedly I live on my own, so I could see the appeal of Switch if I needed to share my TV access with multiple people.  I also think it would have been great when I lived in a dorm.  Loved gaming on portable systems during those years.

Is Nintendo about to announce a new system, or is Target just making more space for the main 3 systems? Hmm.
Anyway, I went to two Targets, picked up Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse Nintendo 3DS for 4.99. Was looking for the Link to the Past sequel or Luigi's mansions, but shrug.

Wouldn’t be surprised if more streamlined versions of the 3DS systems were announced sometime this year. Maybe thinner design, better battery life, etc. Nothing major, just design tweaks. Nintendo already announced a remake of the Wii’s Yawn Kirby game and another Mario & Luigi remake for 3DS, so all signs point to them keeping the 3DS products in production for the time being.

Never signed up for a beta so quickly.  Chose Xbox over PS4 because I imagine there may be X1X enhancements that would trump the PS4 Pro version...

Since today's BC Tuesday, any guesses? Mortal Kombat? Binary Domain? Remember Me? Modern Warfare 2? Any of the Lost Planets? Obscure arcade games no one has ever heard of?

Still waiting on Enslaved to be added to BC, especially since Microsoft owns Ninja Theory now.  Seems like a no brainer

Used the Ultimate Game Sale mainly to repurchase digital copies of Xbox 360 BC games I already owned on PS3.  Got to love the performance improvements you get when running Xbox 360 games on an X1X.

Thanks for the insight, same to the others too.

Does your last sentence mean multiplayer in 1 & 2 are splitscreen?

Quite the opposite.  Mass Effect 1 and 2 are only single player games.  The multiplayer modes in 3 and Andromeda are an afterthought compared to the single player modes in those games.

The entire Mass Effect series is worth a playthrough, just don't expect it to satisfy a multiplayer gaming itch.

#14026211 Amazon Prime Day - yay?

Posted by dwo on 16 July 2018 - 08:19 PM

Nothing will be quite like the glitch Amazon had at the start of Prime Day last year.  Still shocked I got the Crash Trilogy PS4 for around $6 within a week or two after it's release.

I did bite on Persona 5 PS4 for $30.  I missed the prior $30 sales, and was waiting out for it to hit that price again before picking it up.

Sonic Racing is better than Mario Kart in every possible way. Everyone who plays it knows it but is afraid to say it.

It was better than the latest console version of Mario Kart when it came out (Mario Kart Wii), but I hesitate to say it's better than Mario Kart 8 (w/ or w/out the Deluxe)

Looks like Microsoft is integrating more Xbox related rewards with Bing Rewards in the future: https://rewards.micr...ds-announcement

Cannot complain.  Their gift card rewards already play for a chunk of my digital purchases.

Constantly running out of space on my Xbox, haha. Anyone with suggestions on a good cheap external HDD?

Any backup drive that supports USB 3.0 should work fine. Right now I wouldn’t recommend paying any more than $70ish for a cheap 2tb hdd or $50ish for a cheap 1tb hdd. You can go cheaper by buying a hdd and enclosure separately. Highly recommend that route if you have a spare internal hard drive sitting around since enclosures can be super cheap and easy to set up.

I’d recommend going with a name brand (WD, Seagate, etc), but as long as it has USB 3.0 they should all function the same.

#13953781 Official Playstation VR Deals and Discussion Thread

My gut feeling is to keep waiting for Rez Infinite to drop below $10 on PSN before picking it up... hope it doesn't take awhile to happen... I may regret not picking it up this week...

#13792160 $40 on Google Express for $15 via Groupon (Game selection YMMV)

Posted by dwo on 29 July 2017 - 02:52 AM

Resident Evil is 7 for PS4 came back in stock in the NYC area, so I quickly went to grab it with the coupon.  Would have loved to grab Gravity Rush 2 earlier this week, but I sat too long and it sold out.  Probably would have preferred HZD as well, but its still listed at $50 on Google Express.  Going to wait for a deal where HZD hits the sub-$20 price range before picking it up.

Anyway... RE7 for $19.xx (with tax included) isn't that bad of a deal given its 6 months after the game's release.  I figure the earliest it'll reach around $20 again is late fall/Black Friday, so I might as well bite on it now.

Thanks.

Missed Gravity Rush 2 and Horizon Zero Dawn  :bomb:

Maybe this is a sign that I should wait for sub-$20 prices before buying those two...
