#13470100 GOG Deals Thread: FPS Classics $2.99 and Under

I liked 25th anniversary as a kid, never got to play judgement rites but always heard it was good. Keep in mind those are on steam as well though, so theres a chance they'll end up on sale on steam before they get pulled

Ones I recommend from my childhood/nostalgia purposes,

stonekeep - it came with an actual hardcover novel which the digital version is included. Its an alright dungeon crawler if thats your thing

conquest of the new world - civ-like expeditionary game, I just remember pouring many hours in as a kid into this one

I think its just that it matters more or is more noticeable in some games, more fps leads to a more fluid feeling when running through the game world. I remember on bf4 even without the fps counter on I would immediately notice when I would start hitting 60-80fps vs being below that. Everything just felt faster and more responsive.  Turned on the fps counter and there it was

Other games though Ive run at 40-60 and they feel just fine

It seems ars also ran in to similar performance issues, at 30fps they could turn everything up and run at 4k. At 60fps they would get stutters even at the lowest setting.  Sounds like bad port issues, probably they are tying some calculations to the fps expecting to be locked on a console at 30, but on a pc now they are hammering CPUs because they are running 2x calculations on physics and such when they dont need to be. Which then bogs down the cpu and ends up bottlenecking everything else causing random stutters

Either way they claim patches are on the way to fix some of the issues. I was tempted to grab it early to play with some xbox friends but I suppose Ill wait for the demo now

Also hopefully not breaking a fight club rule, but card drops have been glitched for weeks.  If you cycle your games then you can get immediate drops when the next game starts. Works in IM and archi, archi you just start/stop farming, IM just skip games but I like to give some time in between doing this, ~5sec. With this, for example, I had 5 to idle this morning, and managed to get all but 1 of the ~16 cards within a few min. Theres usually one left over that will have to idle normally

not sure if this only works if you dont have the 2hr limit tho, mine only recently got lifted as well and i guess those sketchy freebie revokes havent reset the timer

-edit

actually that cant be right, i just refunded something a week or so ago so Im guessing Im still officially under the 2hr restrictions so this works with that as well

Also if your choosing the disciples games just pick gold, Im pretty sure gold includes renaissance along with another one or two, so no sense in just picking up renaissance

good lord how could that ever be worth it, you would still have to go at least once a week to olive garden for 7 weeks straight. If you like pasta that much then just make it at home for 1/4 the price and 1/10 the salt

I think all ratings still count towards the general Positive, Mixed, Negative, etc.  But you won't see the written reviews from 3rd party buyers unless you have it set to do so.

So you can rest assured, knowing that the guy who wrote "Started game, was raped by a giraffe 11/10 would be sodomized by native African wildlife again" was a real Steam customer and not some fraudulent review by a company shill who was never actually raped by a giraffe.

I think it does affect the overall rating.  There is one game I know specifically that handed out keys and was never really called out on it. Using the wayback machine to go to early august its only had 7 new reviews since then and was previously mixed. Now its mostly negative. If you look at the breakout steam-only purchases weight towards mostly negative (40/52 negative), and cdkey handouts are all very positive(61/75 positive).

If you go to the reviews and sort, when you hit 'all' reviews it changes to 'mixed', steam-only mostly negative, cdkey very positive.  Pretty sure that last part points to steam showing steam-only ratings as the overall rating

Don't take last two models of bottom.

+1

Also I would only take one of their cards that was 8+8 pin. The AIB cards really come into their own when you let them pull enough power to do what the chip was meant to do which is why most come in in either 8+6 or 8+8 in order to pull enough (either one provides enough just EVGA went with 8+8 because MOAR!!!!). If you go with just the standard 8pin then your immediately going to be stuck at basically factory clocks(with a little bit of headroom to OC/boost a bit) while the extra power will let the chip boost much higher. I.e. some quick tweaks and I took my strix 1080 from 1600something to 1950mhz and an extra 350mhz on the memory with no heat hit at all

Its not a complete necessity but it does cap the power draw, so just having the extra headroom can have a much more stable card when its OC'd. So you should also make sure you have enough of those connectors on your PSU if your coming from a card that didnt need that many

No one should run Supersampling enabled. It will render the internal resolution 2x or 4x depending what you set it at.

well depends on the game and what trade offs your making. I.E. when playing bf4 I run at 1.5-2x SS, but that enables me to really crank down the AA which is more taxing at higher levels so you actually gain performance because you no longer need the AA because of the 2xSS and get a better picture out of it

Also as of now alot of people use SS in VR since devs dont provide many (or any) graphics options so the only method you have if you have the hardware to do it is force SS to improve graphics

I don't see where the slope is. Is your game in EA? No extra avenues of monetizing that title. Is it out of EA? Go for it. Seems pretty cut and dried. It's not as though Valve's hands are tied here -- the same people who can add seventeen hoops to selling a 5¢ card can certainly figure out how to set rules for their store.

There was a forum post alot of people were spreading from the steam general EA forum that had rules proposed by members, one of which was no extra monetization during EA. It got bandied around as fact when it was just suggestion, but still, theres a whole set of guidelines proposed by members but of course steam wont adopt any of them.

The optimization and engine gripe is a fair one.  They really haven't done much to fix that and like most open world EA games, it runs like shit.  They need more engineers working on it, but the expansion is mostly a cosmetic reskin of the current game, so I really doubt significant resources were taken from optimization for this.

Normally I would agree with all points, that the engineers who would have been optimizing wouldnt have been working on models/skins/extra stuff. The only thing that makes me doubt that though is the timeline. There hasnt been any improvement to how the game runs in ~8months I think (I sort of remember the game getting fairly playable around that point, vs on release when it was almost unplayable at any setting). If there really are separate developers to work on that stuff then what the hell have they been doing.  Either an entire engine re-write, or they really are not separate teams
