Apparently the latest rumors are that we'll see the new line of Nvidia and AMD cards in September but don't hold me to that.  I'd definitely wait another couple of months until Black Friday/Holiday sales as, if they do push out the new line of cards, you'll see some pretty good discounts on the older stuff.

Still using my AMD 580 I bought a few years ago... and it was mid range even then.

This, theres been reports that the third party builders have already started making the gtx3xxx's, and AMD already said that covid has not affected their output and they are still cranking out both the new cpus and gpus on time for this sept/oct time frame

Yeah that locked-in credit card sucks because I wanted to switch to a card with a higher cash back percentage.  Although... not like an extra 1.5% cash back on a $12 bundle is going to make or break the value considering I end up buying maybe three or four of these per year.

Can you switch it to paypal?  Then you could pick your card on the fly

I'm getting a new iPad for the first time in what feels like a decade so I'm excited to check out some games that will function better than on my Galaxy as well as things available only on iOS.

The big one I'm hoping to get into is Civilization VI. I like turned based games that are fully fleshed out where I don't have to use some virtual joystick. Does Civ VI go on sale often?

Any other recommendations where gameplay just works great on an iPad and is more advanced than most phone games?

Looks like the DLC is on sale again right now for 10$ for the full game unlock, at least thats what my notice said

Ill throw my hat the tv ring. So a month ago I wanted to replace my old 1080p 40in office tv and do a proper mounting with a nice new 4k one. Since it was also the office tv I didnt see a need to spend an extravagant amount so that threw me into the realm of the upper budget tvs.

I landed on the 55in tcl 6 series, 55r625.  I went back and forth between that and the cheaper hisense, from what I could tell the TCL had bit better all around specs but the hisense was ~150$ cheaper. I actually leaned towards the hisense because I prefer android tv and its ability to load whatever you want over the roku interface of only a certain selection of apps all of which may disappear at any time (like the twitch one which is gone).

In the end I went TCL though because the mounting pattern on all the hisense tvs is somewhat non-standard (300x200) and so you need a specific mount that can do odd configurations like that and I already owned a tv mount to use.  Plus the picture quality was a bit better on the TCL and figured I could just keep using my firestick4k for android stuffs. Also the input lag being lower on the TCL is a plus since I can use the pc on one of the other inputs.

So far Ive definitely been pleased with it, great picture quality and improved sound (my old panasonic tv had horrible sound).  I mostly avoid the interface anyway since I just use a cable box and the firestick4k and that has my needs covered

  • Ascendancy (ported to iOS).

This one made me a sad panda. I loved ascendancy back in the day, and immediately bought the ios port. But then it got pulled from the store in 2011 never to be seen again.  So of course I no longer have it after all these years

Looking at my gog list of votes for what to bring:

black and white

dune/2/emperor

lotr BMFE games

freelancer

The whole mechwarrior series

star trek elite force

star trek armada 1/2

you know whats easier than watching a video about editing config files? Just doing a write up that people can copy and paste with instructions and read in about 15 seconds, god i hate how everything has to be a video now

Seems like once every few months they put all their DLC on sale.  On ios civ6 is a free download and lets you play the first 60 turns I think, after that you need the full game unlock

Either way, yea they put the unlock on sale for 50% or more off pretty frequently

You know, I don't know why, but I've got a sudden overwhelming urge to play the original SimCity, specifically on an iPad. It's not even my favorite SimCity, but that's the version it needs to be, and it has to be on an tablet for some reason.

And of course EA doesn't sell the original SimCity on any mobile device, so now I've somehow managed to depress myself for no real reason. Fuck

Theres some alternatives, mostly theotown, and pocket city

What the Fuck did I miss?

And, yes, I know it's my fault for wanting sleep...

Nothing out of the ordinary for this thread, but someones poor little feelings must have gotten hurt over current event discussions and they ran to big poppa mod for comfort

Yeah, listen to this advice. Nvidia is stated to reveal the 3000 RTX series in August, with the launch expected in September. The specs in that article suggest that the 3070 is only 5% slower than the current 2080 Ti. Now, no prices have been given, but given that the 2070 Super is a sub $600 card, I dont think there is any way the 3070 will approach the $1100+ cost of a new 2080 Ti.

All this, plus the ryzen4/zen3 chips are supposed to be dropping along the same time frame, which should provide a pretty big improvement over the current gen ryzens if the server parts are anything to go off of. They will probably equal intel or surpass, gaming wise, and have better perf multi-core wise.  Also the availability of more mobos supporting pcie4, and a slim possibility of ddr5 (not holding out for that one). The time to do a new build is really ~oct+ of this year

Yeah, my new one does too. My buddies who worked for EA used it for coding and graphic design, and I used it for data science and cybersecurity, so it covers pretty much every IT profession. Some of the bigger companies I've worked at have licenses for Skillsoft, and that is a great resource, but one that's only accessible with a pricey corporate license. It includes thousands of books and audiobooks, the only caveat being that the book presentation format largely discourages downloading for later use.

yea my previous job had skillsoft licenses, I do remember there being like a 5 book download limit. Though one book everyone had downloaded was interviews for programmers, since we were all leaving that place and luckily they had a good selection of those

I use Pluralsight for most of my learning. Anyone can create a MOOC and sell it these days, but I find that Pluralsight has high quality curated content. You can find 1/3/6 month trial links online, and I think they have a student program. It only costs $35 per month for unlimited training, anyway. Udemy is also good, but it's at the other end of the spectrum; everyone publishes on it for passive income, making it competitive and resulting in some really good content.

So yeah, the $25 tier includes a wide range of basic concepts for interested programmers. Can't speak to the quality of Zenva's products.

A +1 for pluralsight, thats the site all of our corporate sponsored training runs through and usually has legit and verified teachers who are experts (though that being said the longest course I took for my higher level security training was utterly useless bullshit, do not take the 6hr long pen testing course, the rest were good though).

I havent looked at zenva's stuff but Id assume you're probably right in what you said. There are also probably enough free resources out there that Im not sure how useful places like this are anyway, the best training for programming in general is just thinking up some small project you want to do and hop in, unless you are really really starting from the ground floor with no concepts what so ever, in which case maybe they would be useful but I dont know how well these places teach the actual basic concepts

Then again maybe Im way off and no one learns the basics anymore and its all frameworks and videos all the way down and Im just out of touch, but that can also greatly limit you in the future
